Democrats on Monday called on the chief executive of Clear Channel Communications to denounce remarks by radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, whom they say made a “hateful” and “unpatriotic” attack on U.S. troops opposed to the war in Iraq.

At issue is a remark from Limbaugh that characterized such troops as “phony soldiers.” Democrats have seized on the issue, allowing them to hit back at Republicans who similarly latched onto a MoveOn.org ad that referred to Gen. David Petraeus as “General Betray Us.”

“Thousands of active troops and veterans were subjected to Mr. Limbaugh’s unpatriotic and indefensible comments on your broadcast,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said in his letter to Clear Channel Chief Executive Mark Mays. “We trust you will agree that not a single one of our sons, daughters, neighbors and friends serving overseas is a ‘phony soldier.’ We call on you to publicly repudiate these comments that call into question their service and sacrifice and to ask Mr. Limbaugh to apologize for his comments.”

HOUSE RESOLUTION SUPPORTING LIMBAUGH

Good attempt to defuse the bruhaha over the MoveOn.org ad. And I don’t believe that Rush is on Clear Channel, is he?

This is so unbecoming of the Dem’s in office. I would think certain conduct in the senate/house would be recognized as such but the modern Dem. party has repeatedly stooped to such conduct.

I listened to the show in question. They have taken talking points from Media Matters it appears. It would be nice if they had found out the facts first, but hey that dosen’t suit the agenda. It speaks volumes that the Senate is spending the taxpayers money on a Radio Talk Show Host! The Dems look rather silly, don’t they?:whacky: No matter what channel Rush is on, having millions of listeners will keep him on.😉

so what did he actually say?
I was listening also and that is not what Rush said. He was talking about one particular man, Jesse MacBeth, a washout whom has been claiming otherwise. Rush called Jesse MacBeth the phony soldier.

Here read on: from rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_092807/content/01125106.guest.html
I want to illustrate something for you today, folks. I’ve done it before. I want to do it again. I call this the anatomy of a smear, and what this is is a great illustration of the liberals and the Democrat Party playbook for '08, which is underway now. The morning update on Wednesday dealt with a soldier, a fake, phony soldier by the name of Jesse MacBeth who never served in Iraq; he was never an Army Ranger. He was drummed out of the military in 44 days. He had his day in court; he never got the Purple Heart as he claimed, and he described all these war atrocities. He became a hero to the anti-war left. They love phony soldiers, and they prop 'em up. When it is demonstrated that they have been lying about things, then they just forget about it. There’s no retraction; there’s no apology; there’s no, “Uh-oh, sorry.” After doing that morning update on Wednesday, I got a phone call yesterday from somebody, we were talking about the troops, and this gentleman said something which you’ll hear here in just a second, prompting me to reply “yeah, the phony soldiers.”

That comment, “phony soldiers” was posted yesterday afternoon on the famous Media Matters website, which is where all leftists go to find out what I say. I have a website, and I have a radio program that reaches far more people than Media Matters could ever hope to, but the critics of this program never listen to this program. They never go to my website. All they do is read Media Matters and they get the lies and the out-of-context reports. They assume it’s all true because they want it to be true, and then they start their campaigns. This has led to me being denounced on the floor of the House. Howard Dean has released a statement demanding I apologize; Jim Webb; John Kerry issued a statement, three Congress people went out on the floor of the House last night and said some things, and it’s starting to blossom now in the Drive-By Media. So this is the anatomy of a smear, and this is how it starts. The same group is trying to get Bill O’Reilly into problems because of some innocent comments that he made about going to dinner at a restaurant in Harlem. So the illustration begins with just a sample report from MSNBC whose content is produced almost exclusively by Media Matters for America and MoveOn.org. This is this morning with the anchorette Contessa Brewer reporting on the phony soldier controversy, spawned by me.

This is just about incrementalism toward the Fairness Doctrine. They don’t care if they win the battle as long as our country moves closer to government controlled airwaves.

I think you mean leftist controlled airwaves.

I believe it was stated today that Hillary Clinton was one of the founders of Media Matters. Glen Beck played a recording of her stating that fact. Gee, what a coincedence!!

Rush Limbaugh criticizing “phony soldiers” is a story in and of itself.

As the transcript of the original call clearly indicates, the “phony soldiers” comment is aimed at any soldier who comes back from Iraq and is critical of the mission. They ipso facto get lumped in with the proverbial “left”.

He should own up to what he said and not resort to the typical exuse that all those who get caught red-handed use

:crying: :crying: *They’re taking what I said out of context :crying: :crying: *

Umm, that’s nice and all, but the question is should Congress be pushing to censor him?

If I were them, I’d start with Murtha.

And they did in fact take it out of conext. You may not like Limbaugh, but that doesn’t change what he ACTUALLY said.

Simply not true. The links to what he said have benn provided and either you didnt read it or ignored what it said. It could not be more clear and already the latest smear attempt is blowing up in the democrat’s faces. Will they ever learn?

What link were you reading?
You could not possibly have read the transcript then.
The entire dialog was about Jesse Macbeth claiming he did this and that…making himself as the poster boy against the war.

Problem was that he was a washout and was lying.

Rush did not extrapolate this term to include any soldier that criticized the war. It was a term only for Mr. Macbeth.

Lets get the facts straight. I was listening…were you?

got to hand it to Rush. He ain’t going to lie down and take it.

By the way the same comments were made two days earlier on
In an explosive new twist to the flap over Rush Limbaugh and the “phony soldiers” controversy, it has emerged that ABC News used similar language and the same context in a news segment that aired two days before his comments. As a result, serious doubt should be cast upon those who are pushing for the talk titan’s censure.

In fact, on Monday, 24 September, the network’s Charlie Gibson introduced a segment reported by Brian Ross regarding a number of “phony veterans” now under investigation for falsely claiming to have served in wartime. One of those mentioned in the story is none other than Jesse MacBeth, the same fake soldier referenced by Rush during the program in question.

With congressional Democrats poised to introduce an anti-Rush resolution on Capitol Hill tomorrow, wouldn’t they do well to first take a look at the real story? Otherwise, they may end up with egg on their collective faces.

And given this new information, how will the Soros- funded Media Matters crowd keep this faux controversy alive?

More taxpaper dollars spent on this type of comment.thanks Sen. Harkin for the unnecessary mudslinging comments…

Well, I don’t know. Maybe he was just high on his drugs again. I don’t know whether he was or not. If so, he ought to let us know. But that shouldn’t be an excuse.

The Republicans have presented this resolution:

**IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OCTOBER 1, 2007

Mr. KINGSTON submitted the following resolution

Honoring all Americans serving in the Armed Forces of the United States and commending broadcaster Rush Limbaugh for his relentless efforts to build and maintain troop morale through worldwide radio broadcasts and personal visits to conflict regions.

Whereas the need to show support for American troops serving and fighting both here and abroad during a time of global conflict has never been greater, with the need to communicate an uplifting message of encouragement to American soldiers eternally important, in addition to the morale-boosting value of personal visits to combat region by highly-regarded individuals;

Whereas every American, to include service men and women and broadcasters, is entitled to free speech and the free exchange of ideas; Whereas daily radio broadcasts reaching tens of millions of civilians and soldiers both in America and abroad by way of the Armed Forces Radio Network are conducted five days a week by Rush Hudson Limbaugh III;

Whereas Mr. Limbaugh has consistently used his broadcast time to praise American troops and support them during their ongoing efforts to secure peace in a troubled world;

Whereas Mr. Limbaugh has met with troops in Afghanistan; raised and donated millions of dollars to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, which provides college scholarships to the children of Marines and veterans of other branches killed in action; features an “Adopt a Soldier” program which provides them with free subscription access to his online program features; and Whereas Mr. Limbaugh’s commitment to American troops serving both here and abroad remains as strong as ever: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives, Section 1. The House of Representatives makes the following findings:

(1) Americans serving in the United States Armed Forces have volunteered for such service and have not been drafted for that purpose.

(2) Those who serve in the Armed Forces deserve the respect of all Americans for their willingness to undertake that service

(3) Those who serve in the Armed Forces do not relinquish their constitutional right to express their opinions regarding public policy in a manner consistent with good order and discipline.

Sec. 2. House of Representatives—

(1) recognizes the service of all members of the Armed Forces serving in good standing and with honor to defend the United States, and the personal sacrifices made by them and their families;

(2) commits to judge the merits of the opinions of members of the Armed Forces regarding the policies of the United States, including those related to military actions in Iraq, without prejudice or personal bias;

(3) commends Mr. Limbaugh’s desire to see American troops achieve a successful outcome in Iraq, Afghanistan and wherever soldiers are stationed and his tireless public support for American troops and their families through radio broadcasts, fundraising and other public support;

(4) honors all members of the Armed Forces and civilian personnel serving in harm’s way, as well as their families; and

(5) pledges to debate any supplemental funding request or any policy decisions regarding the war in Iraq with the solemn respect and the commitment to integrity that the sacrifices of these members of the Armed Forces and civilian personnel deserve.

END **

If you consider what Limbaugh is being accused of in the totality of his comments over the years, this charge holds no water!

Limbaugh, like his opinions or not, has always been an ardent supporter of our troups. The same CANNOT be said of the Democrats who accuse him.

The Democrats (most, not all) open hostility towards the troops started back in the 2000 election, when they had an active strategy to challenge military ballots validity for troops with a Florida address, since the vast majority would vote for Bush.

Since that time, and specifically in regards to the Iraq War, Democrats (many, not all) have been openly declaring the war is lost (like Harry Reid), have falsely accused troops of horrendous things (like John Murtha), and actually view us winning the war as a bad thing for their political futures.

This entire issue revolves around the Democrats getting their talking points from Media Matters, an attack group that focuses on taking conservative commentators out of context, in order to discredit them. Perhaps the Democrats should do their own research and think for themselves, as opposed to being mouthpieces for left-wing extremists like Media Matters, Moveon.org, and George Soros.
