  • Defunded Planned Parenthood and stopped all federal tax dollars for abortion: Okay, we haven’t won this fight quite yet, but we’re making a big deal out of it, even though it’s not that big of a budget item. Republicans in Congress care about Planned Parenthood not just because its expensive, but because we all know what they’re doing is abominable.
To make a long story short, we have a lot of anti-abortion, pro-life leaders. They do fight every day, they do care about it even when it doesn’t help (or even hurts!) their re-election chances, and they do “inundate the Media, marching on Washington Mall Identifying them selves in their passion to over turn identifying personally!” They are passionate and they have proven it. Things have not stayed the same. You’re wrong: they are changing constantly, thanks largely to the Republican Party. Help us finish the fight.

Now, not every Republican is as anti-abortion as they should be, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some leading lights. Here are a small handful: Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY), Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-NC), Sen. John Thune (R-SD), Rep. Mary Buerkle (R-NY). There are governors up the wazoo who have taken dramatic stands, including my own former governor, Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN).

And, probably the greatest anti-abortion leader in legislative history: President George W. Bush (R-USA).

Note the lack of D’s among really passionate pro-life leaders. I give Rep. Lipinski (D-IL) due credit for his courage in opposing Obamacare and supporting the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, though.

So, yeah. You ask a fair question. After twenty years of on-and-off Republican control, it is a scandal that we still have legal abortion in this country. I myself have wondered whether our own leadership has betrayed us. Some have: some use us cynically, as a lobby they can use to ride to victory. A few really don’t seem to care about abortion at all, and benefit by its remaining a big issue.

But most of them really do care a great deal, and it is obvious when you look at them and their records and their rhetoric and their life stories. It is Democratic love for abortion rights, not Republican laziness, that is chiefly responsible for that sad truth.
