I think this a direct result from the Citizen’s United decision. A handful of wealthy donors can now tell Congress to dance to their tune or get primaried. The districts have been gerrymandered to such a degree that that is a real threat. Instead of the people picking the politician a wealthy few are able to do it. This type of nonsense is only going to get worse.

Nice spin. John Boehner can hold a vote right now and members of the house will vote on a clean CR and end the shutdown. Just that simple. Let Congress vote and let each Congressman be responsible for his decision. BTW Hastert said yesterday that there is no such thing as the Hastert rule.

Actually you have stated the democrat position. They have made funding government a condition - Republicans have passed several bills funding the rest of government and the Harry Reid refuses to allow the Senate to even consider them.

It’s nice to see this thread is gaining some traction. However, we all have to promise to be nice or Robert Bay will have to start handing out infractions and shut it down.

I am proud of the effort the Democrats have made to bring health care to millions of uninsured Americans. It is the best thing to happen to this nation since Medicare and Social Security were enacted. As a Roman Catholic - I believe health care is a right, not a privilege. I don’t know where some folks get their catechesis, but those who do not support the concept of universal health care are clearly not listening to our Church leaders.

I am deeply embarrassed at what the Tea Party has done to make the United States look like a nation of lunatics. It’s not all Republicans - only those who don’t seem to know how to play nice and who have no respect for democratic process and a leadership who won’t stand up to them because they are totally spineless. There is a legitimate means by which laws are enacted and REPEALED in this nation and holding the government and economy hostage is NOT one of them.

Seriously, does the Tea Party believe they are the ONLY people in this nation with a grievance?

Democrats have wanted to repeal the Bush era tax cuts forever. They cost this nation billions of dollars in revenue each year and are responsible for a big chuck of the deficit and nation debt. Should we take a page out of the Tea Party playbook and go all crazy and shut down the government and risk global financial disaster by threatening to default on the national debt unless the Republicans agree to repeal them? After all, as Mitt Romney would say, “what’s sauce for the goose is now sauce for the gander.”

Fortunately, Democrats do not do this, because REAL Americans respect the democratic process that made this the greatest nation in the world.

Jan Brewer said pretty much the same thing. I was thinking about the Republican governors after reading the articles in your last post. It seems that here are conservative leaders who do still believe in governing and in general they do not appear to support what the Congressional Republicans are doing:

First of all, there is no particular reason to believe Obamacare will bring “healthcare to millions of uninsured Americans” when Obama himself admits 30 million won’t be covered, and it’s beginning to look like more than that. And have you looked at the coverage? It’s reminiscent of what they used to say about the Missouri River, a mile wide and a foot deep. Yes, if you’re a 60 year old woman, you’ll have maternity coverage and full contraceptive and abortifacient coverage, both of which you’re paying for indirectly. But for your hip replacement, it’s only 60% on the bronze plan and 70% on the more expensive silver plan. You pick up the rest. And dumping 17 million more people onto Medicaid only crowds out the poor who are already on it.

So, Obamacare fails what you feel is Pope Benedict’s ideal.

Be embarrassed by Tea Party conservatives or other conservatives if you wish. Personally, I’m not. And it’s a virtual certainty that the leftists in Europe and elsewhere will think we should be embarrassed. Those who are not might well envy a country that actually indulges in robust debate and political battle within constitutional limits rather than submitting to some dictum from Brussels or somewhere. Perhaps many will think Americans really meant it when we rejected kings, emperors or potentates whatever name or title they might apply to themselves.

I’m not a particular admirer of, say, Ted Cruz, but it actually is refreshing to see some of those people in Washington stand up on their hind legs and PROTEST something for a change; to use the powers given to them by the Constitution instead of acting like a herd of lemmings like the Dems seem willing to do when one knows full well that they don’t all believe in Obamacare, but can’t brook the power of their leaders. No, I’m glad to see SOMEBODY resist the “leaders”. As, for example, the Arab and Israeli leaders look on a country that has been so supine in the face of that Lynx, Putin and that devil Rouhani, might well have some new hope that there is actually a spine left somewhere within the borders of the U.S.

Others in this nation who feel they have grievances ought to persuade their representatives to their causes. That’s why they’re there.

Some of the Bush tax cuts WERE eliminated, and (to my sorrow) Repubs went along with it in “compromise”. But when it comes to Obamacare, oh no, we can’t compromise on that even though we know for sure the nation can’t afford it. Irony after irony.

If Obama respected democratic processes, his eyes would be bleary with fatigue from hammering out resolutions with the House. But they’re not because he won’t negotiate with them. Not on Obamacare, not on the Park Service, not on VA, not on the National Institutes of health, not on the debt ceiling, not on anything.

Personally, I hope it keeps on. Those Repubs who are willing to break through the seven veils of the mainstream media that protects Obama from the consequences of his actions are men of noble purpose. Maybe the public will more and more come to see that. Maybe it won’t, and if doesn’t, those who stood up will pay the price. At least they’re willing to risk their careers; a characteristic often sorely lacking in government folk.
