You use your ribs everytime you breath, so I really don’t know what you are talking about.
He has some feeling in his arms, it seems he is paralyzed from below the chest area, which would include his ribs. Ergo, he cannot feel if his ribs are broken.

Do you not understand what paralysis means? An individual that is completely paralyzed from below feels nothing, no pain, no heat, no cold. They have to constantly check themselves because if they are wounded they cannot feel it. It is easy to bleed to death when you can’t tell that you are bleeding.

I understand very well what paralysis means. I’ve worked with many patients that are paralyzed in some way, including quadraplegics.

I was just commenting on the statement you made about bones not being used getting broken easier and the fact he had his ribs x-rayed. I responded that your ribs are used everytime you breath.

Your entire torso and the bones therein gets a daily workout just because of the design of the human body when standing upright.

He obviously does not get this anymore.

I believe you (and wow) misunderstood wabrams post. He was responding to your statement - “it takes very little to crack a bone, especially with lack of use.”

Since the bones in question are the ribs, and Mr. Steiner is breathing, wabrams is making the statement that he is using them.

See my second reply. Breathing while standing is different than breathing while laying down. One is more of a workout for the body, the torso is supporting less when you are not fully vertical.

I apologize for any miscommunication on my part.

I feel for this individual and to be honest was shocked to see a seemingly lack of compassion by some in this thread.

All involved need our prayers imo.

FYI - In an interview, he and his attorney said he was bruised on the side and it was still visible the next day. That was his injury.

Oh my goodness!!! When you crack ribs you can still breath, it just hurts like &^$% to breath. I have had a cracked rib, people in my family have had broken ribs. They don’t put you on a breathing machine just because you crack ribs. You can still breath. They might tape them and put you on a very strong pain med.

Secondly if he was giving them problems it could only have been coming from one place…his mouth. We will see how this plays out, but ideally they would have had audio on him. Not that anything coming from his mouth would have warranted dumping him on the floor.

Without the sarcasm…I agree, nothing coming from his mouth would have warranted throwing him from his wheelchair onto a concrete floor.

That is one of the issues. I can not imagine any justification for that act, and I am fairly imaginative. This does not mean I pity this man any, though. I doubt he is an innocent victim in this whole affair. It irks me that he will probably reap a windfall at taxpayer expense because of this officer’s mistake.

Unfortunately many in power will abuse that power. It is human nature.😦

Remember, it was men guarding Jesus, who was in no way resisting, who decided to crown Him with thorns.

I’m not a lawyer, but I think you are incorrect. What you are describing is battery, not assault. I don’t believe assault does not require physical injuries.

As far as whether this was a felony, it is up to the jury to decide. If the officer presents a decent case for her reason for believing he was faking, then it probably won’t be considered a felony. Just my opinion, of course.
I am a police officer and in the state of Oregon, there must be physical injury for something to be considered an assault. There is no such thing as battery in Oregon. The laws may be written differently in Florida, but here assault requires physical injury. What this sounds like it would be here is the crime of Harassment, which is a misdemeanor. Even Assault IV, which is when someone causes physical injury to another is a class A misdemeanor. I don’t see how they could do a felony from this case. I could see them doing the equivalent of an Assault IV charge if there was brusing.

In Christ,
Rand

Thanks Rand. I wasn’t aware that some states don’t have Battery as an offense. It makes sense the way you explain it. I don’t know what the laws are in Florida, but I agree with you that it doesn’t sound like felony assault to me.
