Despite Catholic teachings, women religiously take the pill

It’s preached from our pulpit. Sadly though, I know that it is not the case in many parishes.
One would think that the Church would preach and reinforce what Catholics teach in the home. It is frustrated and the kids think it is our own thinking. We need the backup from the authority of the Church on a regular basis.

How very sad, and how true was Pope Paul VI when he wrome Humanae Vitae.😦

Rich Olszewski:
I’m educated up to the doctoral level and I gave up on those documents after a few pages.
  1. You gave up. How you got a doctoral education by giving up on things after a few pages is a real shocker.
  2. I can read it without any issues without a “doctoral education”.
Rich Olszewski:
They’re [Papal Teachings] not at all down to earth, but are written on a very lofty plane…
Wow! Really? It’s a Pope speaking not a stand-up comedian. As he says in one of his encyclicals warning people about divorce and contraception:
Casti Connubii:
The Pope isn’t some guy on the street. He has a benefit of perspective and scope that his office naturally gives him, as all high offices give men.
Rich Olszewski:
And, as for Theology of the Body - it is very hard reading indeed. Again, I leave it to the hierarchy to digest. It’s not something young marrieds would want to have to wade through.
False. In fact, this is one of the more popular teachings my RCIA class -especially the ladies- liked. One young, obedient couple did study and did understand it, and they are only now in University. Perhaps education has improved since your time.
Rich Olszewski:
Though this is just anecdotal, I know couples who, having had as many children as they wanted, are glad to be on the Pill so that the fear of an unwanted pregnancy is relieved.
Fear.

Are they afraid there is no governmental assistance for children? Are they afraid -God forbid- the Food Banks are all closing? Are they afraid Public Schools are going to start charging them? Are they afraid the Salvation Army will stop providing clothing? Are they afraid medical science is incapable of almost guaranteering a safe child delivery?

What, exactly, are they afraid of?
Rich Olszewski:
Your link rightly condemns the use of ABC on the part of one partner to frustrate the desires of the other for children. But, more often, the couple is in agreement as to the use of contraceptives.
And divorce.

And abortion.

What’s your point? For a dude claiming to be educated and acting like he knows what he is talking about, you may want to brush up on the definition of heresy.

You’ve clearly been blessed in life, and obviously that life has lifted you up so far from reality that you can afford not to see the great suffering, loneliness, anxiety and general misery that is rampant in modern generations.

You should be thanking God for a good life, not helping the Devil destroy the lives of today’s generation by turning them against the only institutional authority on Earth that truly loves them and teaches them the Truth so they can be reasonably happy in this life, and perfectly happy forever in the next.

It all boils down to a lack of trust in God. In my younger years I was afraid and yes I out my trust in myself rather than God. I have done a full 180 and what a difference it makes.

Then frankly your doctoral education must suck:
  1. You gave up. How you got a doctoral education by giving up on things after a few pages is a real shocker.
  2. I can read it without any issues without a “doctoral education”.
I clearly recall…and forgive can’t site chapter and verse…but Jesus told the Apostles to go out among the people and in “basic” terms speak to them where their live…to their culture climate…level of education.

Wow! Really? It’s a Pope speaking not a stand-up comedian. As he says in one of his encyclicals warning people about divorce and contraception:

I understand your point…there are Catholics who do have a concern about the presentation of the message. Powerpoint is …well boring…and if spoken…is boring still.

The Pope isn’t some guy on the street. He has a benefit of perspective and scope that his office naturally gives him, as all high offices give men.and women 😉

John the Baptist was as “street” as one person can get…and he brought thousands to Christianity. The Apostles were very “street” and traveled many miles to bring people to Christ…without all the “pomp and circumstance”. I believe this is what the poster was referring to.

I went through RCIA later in life and don’t remember the NFP discussion. I was 28 at the time. If it works for the university couple…that is great…but it is not exclusive or absolute for everyone.

Fear.

If you swim out in the big ocean and looking straight into the eye of ecomonic depression…would anyone want to subject a child to endless poverty and handouts from the places you site? NFP can and sometimes can prevent that…sometimes, it can’t…biology doesn’t make it an absolute. If you look around your parish…look at how many families are 2 to 3 children. There is a deeper reason…only known and should be known to those involved in the family…not the Church community or the judges in the pews.

Then frankly your doctoral education must suck:
Your personal insult noted.
  1. You gave up. How you got a doctoral education by giving up on things after a few pages is a real shocker.
Your uncharitable remark noted.

How nice.
Wow! Really? It’s a Pope speaking not a stand-up comedian.
Oh, did I imply that the Pope is a stand-up comic? Please show me the quotation from my post.
The Pope isn’t some guy on the street. He has a benefit of perspective and scope that his office naturally gives him, as all high offices give men.
I can’t agree. There are any number of men holding high office who are without perspective and scope. Just ask some of the conservatives on this Forum if they believe that our President is a man with perspective and scope.
Perhaps education has improved since your time.
Your personal insult noted.
What, exactly, are they afraid of?
Go ask them.
What’s your point? For a dude claiming to be educated and acting like he knows what he is talking about,

How so? You know nothing of what my life is like.
life has lifted you up so far from reality that you can afford not to see the great suffering, loneliness, anxiety and general misery that is rampant in modern generations.
The curse of the educated - the inability to look around them. 🤷

So what’s the minimum quota of Playstations and Nike swag a human being needs to live a happy life of fulfillment? All human beings need food, shelter and water; beyond that, what is most important for them and their development is the love of their parents.

Who’s playing Judge? You’re statement there is as much a ruling as any from a judge in the pew.

Of course, you are correct, but that family is supposed to follow Church teaching. I don’t judge people by the number of children they have because there could be a host of reasons:
  1. difficulty in conceiving
  2. miscarriages
  3. use of NFP to control family size for grave reasons
However, there is nothing wrong with instructing people on the fact that artificial birth control is a grave sin and NFP is acceptable for grave reasons. Also, while I wouldn’t judge an individual family, it doesn’t take a leap of faith to come to the conclusion that many of the small families are not due to the above reasons. There are too many families with a lifestyle that could easily support larger families to buy into the argument that the main use of artificial birth control is to avoid “endless poverty.”

I agree, but even those with larger lifestyles may have fallen into the first two of your categories. I would hope that well-to-do couples like that would consider adopting children.

Tim, this is not about Playstations and Nike shoes. In case you are not up with the news…the real estate market is in a slump. The maximum number of bedrooms in a house are 3. Four if you have a room over the garage. I have no qualm about large famlies. If the Duggers can do it and “afford” for Michelle to stay home and live in the large house they live in…great. My DH is one of 9. My in laws did the best they could…they had “good insurance”…yes that is the key. What is the average “out of pocket”…no insurance cost to have a child? Most people cannot afford it. If NFP works…great.

Who’s playing Judge? You’re statement there is as much a ruling as any from a judge in the pew.
Just wanted you see what it looks like…out in the “real world”. I know you are in Canada…but I am sure you are up to the latest as to what is going on in the US.

In case you wonder…I am pro-life. I have been instrumental in assisting young girls with unplanned pregnancies to choose “life” for their child…and if they can’t parent…adoption is the loving option.

Your personal insult noted.
Actually, I was not insulting you personally, but the quality of the education. You’re not the one who determines the ultimate quality of education. That’s the educators’ reponsibility.
Your uncharitable remark noted.
Yes, I may be hurting your feelings. But what’s more uncharitable:

1. Denying people a potential chance at existence, a chance to live, of experiencing love and intimacy solely for the sake of purely materialistic reasons, or

2. Hurting someone’s feelings?
Oh, did I imply that the Pope is a stand-up comic? Please show me the quotation from my post.
No, you disparaged the teachings of the Holy Fathers because they speak with authority and from the vantage point of a Shepherd, which they are. If they taught or spoke otherwise, then they would not be Shepherds in Truth but something more like stand-up comedians, for example. As an educated man, you should be able to appreciate why Truth should and must be taught with authority, and why the Catholic Church teaches not only with authority, but with love too. Hence, it seems “lofty” because it is. It’s supposed to be.
I can’t agree. There are any number of men holding high office who are without perspective and scope. Just ask some of the conservatives on this Forum if they believe that our President is a man with perspective and scope.
So what? Whether or how a leader utilizes the advantages that come with high office is besides the point that the advantage is there; it exists.

Now you repeatedly chastised me for a lack of charity: mea culpa. But perhaps you should consider being somewhat more charitable in considering the Teaching and Wisdom of the Church, rather than dismissing it out of hand and heckling it for all to see.

Yes, I may be hurting your feelings.
I said nothing about my feelings, just noted the insults.
No, you disparaged the teachings of the Holy Fathers
Please quote from one of my messages to back up this claim??
the Catholic Church teaches not only with authority, but with love too. Hence, it seems “lofty” because it is. It’s supposed to be.
I would argue that it should be comprehensible to the average Catholic, and readable to facilitate that. The Popes should be addressing the ordinary Faithful, not those with advanced educations. Read Theology of the Body. Do you think that an ordinary Catholic can make his or her way through all that and understand it readily?
But perhaps you should consider being somewhat more charitable in considering the Teaching and Wisdom of the Church, rather than dismissing it out of hand and heckling it for all to see.
Again, where did I “dismiss it out of hand”?

I submit that it would be better received and understood if it were framed more in non-academic language so as to get more people to read it from cover to cover.

I’m 20, and have YET to meet any Catholic girls my age who didn’t know birth control is forbade

That has been your experience, and it’s grand that you run with young women who share that fine mentality, but it is undeniable that a large percentage of young women, including Catholics, do use ABC either with their boyfriends or as young marrieds.

Yes, I’m in Canada and frankly we know more than anyone else on Earth what goes on in the U.S. Our lifestyles, our culture, our standard of living and beliefs are almost exactly the same.

Your service of assistance for young women is awesome. 👍

Nonetheless, I grew up and live - thank the Good Lord - in nice houses and with a good Christmas every year. I would have traded both, though, for a brother or another sister or parents who stayed together.

Values. Americans ramble on about them all the time. Frankly, people are more valuable than our cars or houses. People are what make the nation, the community and guarantee we have a bright future.

Money does not buy happiness. Living comfortably will not save people from becoming uncharitable or misers; in fact, it is more likely to turn people in to those very things, exactly because they fear the loss of that wealth and therefore choose to have trivial comforts instead of choosing to embrace life. Fear is not something we usually elevate to a value or virtue. It’s not particularily noble or inspiring. Fear is what drives the culture of death onward: in the U.S and in Canada.

So Bishops and educated Catholics need to assist more in the process?

We do not need to read and understand the Summa to be good Catholics, but that doesn’t make the Summa bad simply because it might be difficult. The important thing is defending the Faith and conveying the Truth. Understanding difficult ideas is, of course, difficult; nonetheless, the Catholic Church, mainly in her educated laity, has the resources to make it understandable for everyone.

If I rememeber correctly, most Papal statements address the Bishops. It is the Bishops who have the duty to teach the local faithful. Only in extremely rare and specific cases does the Pope actually and specifically address the laity, such as in the recent statement to Irish Catholics or the encyclical condemning Nazi philosphy, which was only read in Germany.
Again, where did I “dismiss it out of hand”?
That’s the impression I got from reading your posts. I apologize (again) if I misread your intentions; nonetheless, and let’s be honest here, you weren’t going out of your way to defend Catholic teaching on this matter.
I submit that it would be better received and understood if it were framed more in non-academic language so as to get more people to read it from cover to cover.
I agree in principle, and would suggest that perhaps, though the original documents are difficult for many or most; nonetheless, educated Catholics and Bishops have a positive duty to make it understandable -as much as it needs to be- for the local laity, whose education and composition might vary wildly.

That has been your experience, and it’s grand that you run with young women who share that fine mentality, but it is undeniable that a large percentage of young women, including Catholics, do use ABC either with their boyfriends or as young marrieds.
…oh, crud. I wrote that wrong. Actually, my intention to say say I’d never met a girl who DID know it was wrong. Darn those double negatives.

So, they are in complete agreement to mortally sin? That’s reassuring. 😦
I suspect that those couples, Catholic and non-Catholic, who choose to use ABC don’t do so in agreement to commit a sin. I doubt if it even crosses the minds of most of them.

Not to worry. There’s many a slip between cup and lip. 😃
