I hope and pray that whatever his motive was, if any, that he gets the help he needs but also that justice is served. I suppose it is possible that he was criminally insane. Whether or not that is actually the case remains to be seen.

According to Fox News, it also appears that he was a drug abuser and had connections to an anti-Semitic, “white nationalist” group.

Suspect is possibly linked to this group. (through videos posted on his MySpace and YouTube account.). The group’s ideology is anti-government, anti-immigration, anti-ZOG (Zionist Occupational Government), anti-Semitic.”
The spokesperson from the AmRen said he wasn’t a susbcriber or member so I am not sure if the above just means he linked to videos or publications someplace or what. His YouTube page doesn’t have any videos from the group.

I feel the Sheriff’s remarks were reprehensible and indicative of a jump to judgment. In another thread I spoke of our duty as Catholics to avoid rash judgment. Just because this man was a liberal, drug-using, flag-burning, supporter of Obama with purported gender issues, doesn’t mean that we should be trying to silence leftwing bloggers like the Daily Kos, who spew hate and vitriol. We must as Catholics seek clarity with charity and, as Americans, safeguard our freedoms.
There are now reports (Politico) that some operatives of the Democrat Party were trying to spin this as a Tea Party action. This is what creates division in the nation. We must seek truth EVEN if it doesn’t shine a favorable light on our own prejudices. It appears that this is a crime committed by a very disturbed soul. To politicize it as the sheriff has, taints the suffering of the victims and their families. I fear this will add fuel to the fires of those who wish to squelch free exchange of ideas such as we have here at Catholic Answers.
Let us hold all the victims of violence in Arizona in our hearts and prayers and seek the full truth…

That’s what happens when you (the Tea Party) have nothing to say except to threaten. Sure it’s First Amendment rights but just hope they don’t use what you say against you eventually. It certainly doesn’t help you in a court of law.
People had been bringing guns to town hall meetings just to prove a point. And they were supported. Well, when someone fires one of those things at children, perhaps it’s more than a point. And it’s no longer terrorism, it’s war!

I agree that the SPLC’s designation of the FRC as a hate group was going too far, however their decision was not because of the FRC’s opposition to gay marriage. As CatHerder’s link makes clear, the FRC was labeled as a hate group because of its history of putting out false or distorted information about gays and lesbians in an attempt to cast them in a bad light. However, I think false and misleading information is normal for politics, and its up to citizens to sort through the lies and deception. FRC’s tactics, while not admirable, falls short of making it a hate group.
As for the gunman in this horrible shooting goes, I agree with Didymus. The shooter was far too mentally off-balance to have any coherent ideology or motives.

The SPLC put them on their hate watchlist during the debate over proposition eight. They provided no examples whatsoever of false or distorted information about homosexuals. The SCLC’s rationale was that homosexual behavior is perfectly normal and anybody who criticizes it is guilty of hatred and bigotry.

Why the vitriol against the Tea Party? These are good, average, Constitution-loving patriots. They have committed NO crimes, but crimes have been committed against them. They are generally pro-American, pro-life, good, honest citizens. They have been portrayed as racists, bigots, etc. by a largely left leaning media and fearmongering politicians. This is simply not true. Are there bad apples? I am sure, but that is true in every group including our own glorious Church. The rush to judgment is exactly what those who want to restrict our freedoms wish to achieve. This is an isolated act by a madman–and not the first (or last) in our nation’s history. Even the profilers are admitting this now. No, this was the act of a psychotic, deeply disturbed soul.
I submit that the reason we have become so polarized in our country is because we are now legislating issues that were “anathema” sixty years ago. There is no middle ground on things like abortion, euthanasia, communism, or same-sex marriage. The moral stakes have escalated. Naturally, this has absolutely NOTHING to do with this shooting, BUT, trying to make it so is divisive. We must always remember that WE, as individuals, are responsible for our behavior (to the extent that we can process right and wrong), not television; talk-radio; the internet; our professors; or our parents. There is always a search for someone other than the responsible party(ies) to blame.
Despite the fact that this man is described as a liberal, I do not blame liberals for shooting this “blue dog” Democrat, whose views were largely conservative (although she had a 100% rating by NARAL). I believe this poor soul was suffering from a serious mental illness, and his actions were not the responsibility of the Daily Kos, MSNBC, Keth Olberman, the NYT, the "blogosphere,"or anyone else.
