“If anything, this resignation as an auxiliary to Cardinal Maida will make him even freer than he was before to travel, to speak and to write,” the Rev. Thomas Reese, a California-based scholar who is an expert on church structure, said Wednesday.
“I will continue to teach, preach, celebrate sacraments and carry on my work for justice and peace wherever I am called to do so,” Gumbleton said in an open letter to parishioners. “This of course includes as a priority my ministry at St. Leo’s.”
We can be certain of that!Though, as the article points out, this bishop may very well continue to cause more disarray for the faithful Church now that he is officially retired:
I apologize for any offense, but the Detroit Free Press is to journalism as my fifth grade essay on my summer vacation is to great literature. And it’s kind of odd that the everyone seems to know about this resignation but the holy see.
At best it will reduce his credibility, if only a small amount. Currently, I think many of his favorite media outlets mislead unsuspecting readers and listeners by qualifying his statements and actions with the fact that he is a Bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit even though he does not often speak on its behalf. This really isn’t gonna change much for Bp. Gumbleton…he’s had no curial role since about 1993.
He remains a bishop, you can’t scrape away ordination, and he’ll still be a bishop of the archdiocese of Detroit, albeit a retired one. Canonically they have certain obligations to him, although I highly doubt he’ll want them to buy him a condo anywhere. At best it will reduce his credibility, if only a small amount. But, he will still retain his title in emeritus status.
It is intriguing to consider the timing of recent events, isn’t it?
Either way, I will continue to pray for him.
We agree on both points (I think for the first time everHe remains a bishop, you can’t scrape away ordination, and he’ll still be a bishop of the archdiocese of Detroit, albeit a retired one. I wish he had been a little less divisive, because a lot of his thoughts are pretty good…he doesn’t travel with an entourage, he doesn’t shy away from tough issues, and he really lived out his committment to the poor.

By Gudrun Schultz
DETROIT, Illinois, January 26, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, who is known as an activist for homosexuality in the Church, has handed in his resignation to the Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI is expected to announce the resignation today.
Bishop Gumbleton resisted mandatory retirement last year when he reached the age of 75, asking to continue on as Auxiliary Bishop to Detroit Cardinal Adam Maida. His request, given to the head of the Congregation for Bishops, Cardinal Giovanni Re, was denied.

In spite of your unfortunate typos, your fifth-grade essay on your summer vacation really wasn’t all that bad… it was quaint, at times, poignant… kinda’ like Richard-John-Neuhaus-in-drag, actually.I apologize for any offense, but the Detroit Free Press is to journalism as my fifth grade essay on my summer vacation is to great literature.
In fact, there were fewer typos in my essay than in a typical Detroit newspaper article.
Oh, puh-leeeze…The bodies of his homilies usually contain some good, faithful teaching. Then, quite often, there is a delicate twist in the end which leaves the average reader guessing and suspicious of his motives. I am sure his target audience eats it up, though.
Because it’s Lifesite News that’s reporting…If what Lifesite news writes about Bishop Gumbleton is true, why wasn’t he removed years ago?
How am I glib and/or superficial for critiquing Detroit newspapers? I am not trying to be either, so please take it easy.Could you possibly be more glib? or superficial?
