I know that this is slightly off topic, but was there seriously a Polka Mass at Sweetest Heart of Mary today (November 20)?

pm1853:
The Cluster Paper does say something about a Polka Mass and
Feather Party so I assume its true. However a nice Polish lady that I know said Polka Masses were just Polish in nature as in the music but no dancing or strange practices. She attended two of these masses and found no problem.

To everyone else in this forum:
I would like to remind our people from St. Josaphat that this forum should remain used. I want to consider it the online extension of our social hour. Also please post your comments on the past Masses such as Fr. Borkowski’s Solemn High Mass and our Feast of St. Josaphat. Also I want to add that if you would like to express anything about the Cluster Churches on this forum feel free to do so.

Thanksgiving Day
Noon Mass at St. Josaphat with Novena to the Black Madonna of Czestochowa according to the Novus Ordo Rite

Polka isn’t Polish! I have said this about a million times to a million people. Polka is a Croatian/Czech form of music with no connection to Polish traditional culture.

Have there been any weddings performed according to the Tridentine Rite at St. Josaphat?

I must respectfully disagree with you.
Although the form of music may have started in those regions, it was fully adopted into Polish Folk Dance many generations ago.

My girls perform Polish Folk Dance. One of the first steps they learn is a “Polka Step”. It may have been called something else in Poland, but to American Poles, it is part of our heritage.

Yes, I agree that it is part of American Polonia culture and history but it isn’t part of the Polish(that is the homeland) culture. Polka music being part of the cross mixture with other cultures which occurs in the USA

**With Advent season starting tomorrow, and Christmas not far away, how about if we start posting any special Masses coming up, and a Christmas Eve Midnight Mass schedule?

I really, really miss the Duns Scotus midnight Masses (truly shows my age). And it is difficult anymore to find a Christmas Eve Mass that starts at Midnight.

St Alphonsus’ Christmas Eve “Midnight” Mass will be at 9:00 pm. Which is great because I will be getting off of work shortly before.

Any idea of other churches?**

I would like to keep this thread on topic and not go off on the topic of the Tridentine Mass in Detroit so I would appreciate it if this thread is not made into an big announcement board for other churches. However other churches with Latin Masses such as Assumption Grotto and Holy Family etc… can also have a place here.
Thank You & God Bless

Metro Detroiters, please check out this thread for upcoming Sunday talks in December and January at Assumption Grotto.

Didn’t see the above post until after I replied. Some of these conferences are taking place shortly and I wanted to get word out. Knowing how Metro-Detroiters lurk here I thought it may be of interest to both TLM and Novus Ordo folk.

Please respond only in the link above on this issue to not take it deeper into thread drift here.

**Diane and CathMass, thank you for your postings! The Mass schedules are really helpful.

Has anyone been to the Cathedral for Mass? What is it like there?**

Blessed Sacrament Cathedrral?

I haven’t been to Mass there, but have seen it on TV enough times to know I’m not too interested. They took a decent building and renovated into something completely uninspiring, imho. I’m glad I didn’t have any $ to cough up at the time to help with the project because I would not have appreciated my money going into it.

I don’t know why, but modern architecture just seems stone cold and almost pagan-like. Forgive me in advance if I’ve offended anyone with my personal opinion.

I agree with you, Diane. I was sadly disappointed by the renovation and I think such examples of modern elements have no place in our historic, sacred sites. For those who may not yet have seen it, here is a link to the photo gallery.

I have been to the Cathedral only once, about 9 years ago during RCIA, for the Rite of Election.

For what it is worth, I think Sweetest Heart of Mary should replace Most Blessed Sacrament as the Cathedral. After all, it is the largest church within the Archdiocese. It will likely never happen, perhaps partly due to the fact that Sweetest Heart of Mary was originally built in defiance of the Bishop. What an interesting history for this sister parish of Saint Josephat!

If Sweetest Heart of Mary or St. Albertus could levitate to 18 Mile and Ryan, St. Cyrils could certainly put it to good use!

(please share the story about defiance of the Bishop and SHoM)

Its a very old church so I’m sure there have been, the indult that began last year however has permitted a single mass on Sunday only. Weddings, baptisms, funerals, Holy Days and anything other then the one mass are forbidden.

While still on the subject of Sweetest Heart of Mary, I was able to make it to last Friday’s Mass followed by Benediction/Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The celebrant was not Father Borkowski but instead the new assistant, Father Paul Ward. What a blessing for this cluster to have such young, outstanding priests! Father Ward’s Latin is so fluid and his movements so precise, it would not surprise me to see him celebrating the TLM at St. Josephat before long.

He has been persecuted by the leftist element in the Archdiocese, also. He is a very good priest. Keep him in your prayers.

For the last 2-3 weeks, Fr. Ward has been celebrating 6:00 am daily Mass at SS Cyril & Methodius. I’ve been blessed by his presence at three of them so far. What an amazing priest!

To keep it on-subject: I would also love to see Fr. Ward celebrate the Tridentine Mass. When he prays in Latin, it sounds practically like music - simply beautiful.

Sue, its a shame that such priests have to endure persecution, no matter the degree.

I know Fr. Ward is a product of the Grotto, and it is good to see him in an enviroment where he will be appreciated, same with Fr. Butsamante who is now at the Grotto. It is better to have priests be able to teach the fullness of the faith and encourage vocations rather than be treated like garbage at St. Suburbia because of offending the dogmas of political correctness.
