Anyone that is into the music here (early era Cure-type, goth/alternative type, you know…) have any Christian music they can recommend?

I’d like to support these artists, but most of the Christian music I sample sounds very country or rock-close-to-the-border-of-country. Any Christian music that could be like ā€œshoe-gazerā€ Christian? šŸ™‚

Yes.

and under #5 of mortal sin, are listed
  • Self mutilation
  • Excessive tattoos
and under #8 in the venial sins/imperfections section is
  • Complaining, whining or attention seeking.
I think it depends on what kind of self mutilation your talking about. If someone has a cutting problem, like I did for years, I don’t consider it a sin. I was going through a hard time, and I didn’t know what to do with my hurt and anger, so I cutt myself. It was a medical problem, so it cannot be considered a sin.
And like I have said so many times in this thread, my dressing the way I do is not for attention. I don’t like attention at all. I just like these clothes and I fell confident in them. The girls walking around in high heels, mini skirts, and barely there tops are out for attention. I would rather walk around in a potato sack than dress like most girls these days.

IMHO, a punker CAN be a devout Catholic. Should we be in the business of telling others that they are wrong by virture of their clothes, nose rings, lip rings, etc…??? I find it distasteful, but it is not for me to judge. it is for me to love my neighbor as myself,…by such setting n example.

Catholicism is in your heart, mind and soul. We are supposed to be a ā€œhospital for sinners and not museum for those that have self applied stigmataā€. šŸ™‚

I am 50 and an artist and have many tattoo’s. And ears pierced. I like the look of dark clothes…like priests black outfits. And I think that those who do not look at your artwork for it’s meaning is THEIR problem. I had many tats changed once I became a christian. My sacred Heart of Jesus which is a half sleeve has made it possible for conversations to start about my Faith as a Catholic and I have through this means been an instrument God used to bring a handful of younger people back into the church.
People opinions really shouldn’t matter when it comes to your look as long as it is modest. Years ago at age 12 it was only possible to get my ears pierced by a doctor and my mother was horrified. Before that women who dyed their hair were considered more loose many times. It is so cultural an issue more then a moral issue unless it involved inmoral behavior such as immodesty, etc. I say express yourself. Being an artist and raised in a Christian and artist family I may have more creative views then some. In Medival times Sholdiers tattooed symbols of Christ and Blessed Mother on their bodies before battle. Tats in the beginning were always spiritually based. My tats are too.

Fascinating thread! IMO, people who are so clothes conscious are not out to impress God. I doubt he is impressed by fishnets, fingenail polish, studs or piercings, designer jeans or stiletto heels. I might suggest you try to figure out exactly who you are trying to impress by challenging you to one day go out in really simple clothes, just enough to be modest and keep you warm, and ā€œsensibleā€ shoes to top off the outfit. Study your feelings and maybe you will begin to understand yourself. Why are you putting all this time, effort, and money into - WHAT? Perhaps you could put your time and resources to better use?
In the final analysis what we all seek is someone who will accept and love us without our masks and costumes, with our bare faces hanging out, just are we are. That’s how God loves us and, if we are not afraid to be unadorned we might be fortunate enough to find a human who will love us that way, too.
So, adorn your soul, put on the armor of God, etc., etc. God loves you and so do I.

You should try P.O.D. They rock! I listen to a local radio station called ā€œthe effectā€ and they play christian alternative. I loves it, although it’s protestant, so you kind of have to tune out the sermonette breaks LOL

I do not think the way we dress is ALWAYS for attention or a 'message" to others, regardless if one classifies it Punk, Conservative, etc. IT can be simply that we have found our own personal style and like it. Sure, many times Punk is to give an impression of rebel, etc. And ā€œYuppieā€ dressing for the impression I am well to do and together. But it can be that it is just what one likes. I think the moral issue is only about making sure one is not provacative. You can debate forever on the right and wrong of dress…but culturaly over the centuries humans have dressed very differently and accepted oddities too. SO, once again I think it is one’s intention and morality that is way more important then the ā€œlookā€, If we all were the same that would be boring. And a thought that just came to me…St.Francis and John the Baptist and alike all were dressed weird in their times!

Lol, I just happened to come across this thread. My username says it all…

I recommend Mae for some good Christian ā€œpunkā€ music. šŸ™‚

God isn’t impressed by a sharp suit or the traditional Sunday finest either, considering how many saints and prophets dressed in rags – so why not have some fun with fashion? šŸ™‚

I wouldn’t worry too much. If you are practising your faith, then it sounds mostly harmless.

Besides, statistically speaking, you are going to out grow your Goth-like interests as you get older anyway.

I know I’ll get tired of it one day, maybe sooner than later. In a few years time I’ll hopefully be wearing scrubbs most of the time (I want to be a doctor). I’m the kind of person that i don’t go by only one style. I like my punk look, but that doesn’t stop me from wearing what my mom calls my hippie look every now and then. I don’t let society tell me how I should look or dress. If i followed society I’d most likely look like a street walker, like most girls my age do.
I don’t spend much money at all on my clothes. I can’t even remember the last item of clothing I bought. I’m usually spending my money on my loved ones or my pets. So I’d disagree with the person who said I put to much into my clothes. I don’t think God is impressed by a persons clothing, whether it’s ā€˜normal’ or goth/punk. I don’t think he looks at how the person dresses, but how they live their lives.

Gah, I think you were my twin in a former life.😃 What kinda doc do you want to be? I’m gonna be a pediatricion myself, and i’d like to look into neonatology

Oh my, this thread fits me perfectly. To anyone who says that you cant be a punk and a devout Catholic: please feel free ask my bishop why he accepted me into the seminary to study for the diocese of Wichita, Kansas.

And I can’t believe someone mentioned Richard Hell and the Voidoids. They happen to be just about my favorite of all time. Well, them and The Adicts…and Toy Dolls…all the good ones. Good job for starting this thread.

And to think that I once wondered if I was the only Catholic punk out there…

if your in the same boat, send me a message, I’m curious how many of us there are.

I fully intend on being at the skatepark in my clerics in a few years and showin the young’uns how we Catholics do things.

Oh yeah, and good Christian Metal/punk. Yeah there is lots of good ones. And no, its not that sissy stuff, this is full on metal:

THE SHOWDOWN - first cd preferably, but both are good
Haste the Day
As I Lay Dying
The Chariot
Chasing Victory
Demon Hunter

I know many others too so if you want more, just say the word…

sorry for the 3 posts in a row but I forgot a really good Christian metal band. Well more like Metal/hardcore.

BECOMING THE ARCHETYPE

thats a seriously good one.

I always have wondered about the Christians link of some youth subcultures.
  1. The mods and skinheads (the original non racist ones) with the insistence in ā€œclean living under difficult circunstancesā€. I often lurk into non racist skinheads forums and mods forums and I’m surpised to know that they are proud Christian mods and skinheads who are often Catholic or Methodist (basically arminian)
and heavely involved in socially councious working class endeavours like team sports, labor unions, food kitchens.
Clean living punks have much in common with non racist skinheads. Like the music.
  2. The hippies have a Jesus movement side.
  3. The Goths. Most of the Goth imaginery is heavely Catholic and Anglican. The name Goth for example comes form the romantic period love for medieval imaginery. Dressing in black ( i think that the jesuits and italian widows were pioneers in that). The St Peter Cross, the memento mortis, the crucifics, the rosaries, the whole like as a valley of shadows and suffering outlook. Ann Rice who is a icon in the Goth community and now a devout if a bit liberal catholic is a clear example of the link. And she have written on that on her site.

It’s nice to see others I can relate to on this site.
I’m not sure what kind of doctor I want to be yet. I know I want to work with children and I also want to do missionary work part of the time.
I’ve had multiple health issues sinse birth, so hospitals are like a second home to me. It freaks alot of people out when i say this, but i actually like hospitals. Very strange I know.
