Oh my, this thread fits me perfectly. To anyone who says that you cant be a punk and a devout Catholic: please feel free ask my bishop why he accepted me into the seminary to study for the diocese of Wichita, Kansas.

And I can’t believe someone mentioned Richard Hell and the Voidoids. They happen to be just about my favorite of all time. Well, them and The Adicts…and Toy Dolls…all the good ones. Good job for starting this thread.

And to think that I once wondered if I was the only Catholic punk out there…

if your in the same boat, send me a message, I’m curious how many of us there are.

I fully intend on being at the skatepark in my clerics in a few years and showin the young’uns how we Catholics do things.
I really think it’s so awsome that your a punk, but going to be a Priest.
I don’t think the church itself looks down on people who are punks or goths, I think it’s mainly the lay people. Theres a Priest at my church thats a very good friend. He’s never once made a remark about my punkish style. My mom asked him once if it was anti-religious for me to wear things with skulls on them. He said it depends on my reason for wearing it. He said it could actually be a good symbol to wear. I can’t really remember what he said, but I don’t feel bad about wearing my skulls anymore.
My mom is not real comfortable with my dark clothing. She thinks that whenever I wear my dark clothing I must be depressed or something.

Your priest is cooler then mine, then. Of course, it doesn’t help that I had to confess that I missed mass because my parents didnt like my clothes and I wasn’t about to change when i first met him. Since then he’s been pretty cool. He still thinks I’m the futrue mother superior, though, gothic makeup and all.😉

My mom calls me Mother Superior all the time, but it’s not because I’m saintly. I’m just bossy.

Dear ChildofGod…
I think its cool that you dress like that and still have God at the centre of your life… the main reason while I have absolutely no problem with that is that you, with that style, might be able to get into certain environments and be approached by certain people, people that might not approach me, that you will then be able to share the Gospel with… and thats always cool.
So, stay cool 🙂

I think if you do your best to avoid scandal with the outfits you wear that is the most important. I know it is a hard thing to do for you Ladies. For us guys, sometimes that edgey kind of stuff is sort of attractive, like a Kat Von D. kind of thing.

On the other hand, maybe you could incorporate some cool Catholic Art into it like the Slavic Cross (see below) . It has a skull in it. Then you could also whiteness too.

I saw a really neat jacket once at a clothing store that sold punk/goth items. It had Our Lady of Guadelupe (spelling?) on the back. It was really nice, but i wasn’t too crazy about spending $70 bucks.

All the “punk” Catholics I know are Trads. 😃

That’s makes about two though. And I don’t think they’d consider themselves “punk”. They’re just fun.

Yes you can be both. I grew up a Catholic and a punk. However on Sundays I wear my shirt and tie. I may wear D.K. and Fishbone shirts during the week, blast Minor Threat and Black Flagg, but on Sunday at Mass I wear my best, because I am before Christ, His Father, and His Mother.

sounds like Hot Topic. Although religious stuff has gone “out of style” for now.

Hello child_of_God85

After reading much of this thread it donned on me that your original post was prompted by doubt. Doubt about the potential conflict between the way you dress and your faith. Being older, striving to grow in faith, and confessing regularly, I have found that, many times, it is these small doubts that lead to growth. Pray for guidance. You might find that the Lord doesn’t care so much about the way you dress nor should you. God bless.

Hi child_of_God85,

You’re heart might be in the right place today, hon, but if you continue to dabble in the world of the occult (a.k.a. “punk”) then there is a great danger that you could become what you appear to be.

After all, there are many possessed persons who started out innocently enough just playing with oijia boards, or going to palm readers for a “fun time”. satan is very clever in how he draws you in to his web.

You might try asking yourself…“Why do I want to wear these types of things, and do my makup this way?” “What is my reason?”

If it is …‘to be noticed’…what does that say about your humility?

If it is …‘to fit in’…what does that say about your fortitude – or lack thereof?

If you truly are a devout Catholic, as you say, why would you don the wardrobe of people given over to occultism?

Ask yourself these questions, and you’ll start to know yourself.

God bless and keep you, hon!
John

Punk has little to do with the occult. Goth does, but not in the way you think. I highly doubt the OP dribbles in the occult.

Your sterotyping, badly, because as I said Punks have little to do with the occult. The OP dresses for herself, she needs no reason to don her fashion.

Now if you want to ask me about the occult, fine. Yeah i’ll admit I do study vampires and other supernatual things from time to time. But it’s a way to protect myself from the devil. It’s better to know your enemy then to be ignorant of him. I walk though darkness, afterall.

Occult? I do not dabble in the occult at all. Period.
For me, punk is a fashion sense. I think your mixing punk with satan worshippingor something.
Don’t judge people by how they dress either, thats very unchristian. I’ve met many people who dress punk or goth and they are completely devoted to their faith. Most atheists that i’ve met or seen on tv look like regular people. I’ve seen many satanists that dress normaly.
You truely cannot judge people for the way they dress, 99% of the time you’ll be wrong about them.

Most punks I know are either social leftists or anarchists, atheist or jewish/christian but they have nothing to do with the occult.
The Venerable Doroty Day’s type.
Some Goths have to do with the occult but most do not. Being Goth is more subculture related to wearing your emotions outside, of being arty, sometimes depressed and longing for depth in the world. Is about living a Dark Night.
Christian Goths is a legitimate idea. Look a this “Gothmother” and now a devout catholic (annerice.com/)).
Now my question is who should be the saint patron of Catholic Goths?
I propose St John of the Cross.
