Did Adam and Eve know Good and Evil before they ate the fruit?

I think he is already healping himself!👍
He really need help.
Would you agree that a literal interpretation of Genesis is clearly contradicting the real world according to the laws of logic and physics? For example, there are no talking snakes in the world at present.
I agree with you.
would you agree that a literal interpretation of genesis isn’t the correct way of understanding genesis? Otherwise you would have to believe that the world was made ten thousand years ago.
I agree with you.
Would you agree that there is no such thing as a fruit that has the knoledge of good and evil in it. It is an alegorical simili metaphore. To look it otherwise would suggest that a perfectly Good God created sin and evil and put it in a tree.
I agree with you.
They experienced the love of God, but they had no knowledge of comitting sin. This is the whole point of the story. Argueing over a metaphorical alegorical story that has posible errors in logic and is an imperfect representation of what happened in reality, misses the whole point.
I agree with you. They had no knowledge of committing sin. But what they did was against God’s command which is a sin. God considered their situation and forgiven. And then guided them for further temptations.

How do you say that, when verses are lost?

Allegation? I don’t have to entertain that.

You used my argument against me? when?

We are discussing scriptures.

Hadiths and other scriptures are to support the readers. Not Quran. Where you heard the names Hadith and Sira, when you don’t know what is it at all? As I said before, Hadith are reports of companions of prophet. Hadiths gives us when and in what situation revelations happened. It also tells, how prophet explained each verse when it is revealed. Read the Quran once to know, weather it convays the message it revealed for.

Please avoid unnessessary allegations.

It is better to know what we are talking.
Thank you for your explanation, but I am familiar with what the hadiths and the sira are and how they are used concerning Islamic teaching and laws.

You have tried to prove the passages concerning Adam and Eve are in error. Regardless of what others have written you seem to be undeterred in your opinion. I am stating that if you applied your logic to the Qur’an you would find similar issues. My point is not to discredit the Bible nor the Qur’an, but to show that neither book has the perfection you seem to be searching for.

In this passage:

*Surah 18. The Cave 86. Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: “O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness.” *

The passage implies Zul-qarnain came to where the sun sets in a spring of murky water. Just because the sun does not set in murky water does not discredit Islam, but it shows that the perceived flaws in the text need greater explanation

This is the source of the passage:
islamicity.com/mosque/QURAN/18.htm

If you have reference to a Qur’an that contains a more accurate translation, I would be happy to refer to that one instead for future discrepancies.

Peace be with you

I found the logic in Quran.

Adam’s sin and its outcome are depicted in the following verse of the Quran:

"O Adam, dwell with your wife in the Garden and enjoy as you wish but approach not this tree or (if you eat) you run into harm and transgression. Then Satan whispered to them in order to reveal to them their shame that was hidden from them and he said: ‘Your Lord only forbade you this tree lest you become angels or such beings as live forever.’ And he swore to them both that he was their sincere adviser. So by deceit he brought them to their fall: when they tasted the tree their shame became manifest to them and they began to sew together the leaves of the Garden over their bodies. And their Lord called unto them: ‘Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you that Satan was your avowed enemy?’ “(Quran 7:19-22).

Please note that, the Satan was lying to Adam and Eve, about the power they get if they eat the fruit and in the Bible Serpent was not lying. As per Bible, they got the knowledge of good and evil after they eat the fruit which GOD confirms by saying ”The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil” which made me think that, haven’t they had that knowledge before? As per Quran, they knew good and evil. Still Adam and Eve disobeyed GOD and felt shame of sin once after they ate the fruit. As per Bible, GOD was not supposed to claim that disobeying a sin, since Adam and Eve haven’t had the knowledge. But as per Quran, when GOD asked ‘Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you that Satan was your avowed enemy?’; God had a point. Quran gives me the logic which I lack in the statement of Bible.

You are right. In concern of conveing any message some people might need clarificaion. It depends upon the capability to grasp things. check the very same verse you quoted. Just a careful read will do enough to understand the concept.

*Surah 18. The Cave 86. Until, when he reached the setting of the sun (It refers to the time. he reached there at the time of sunset), he found it set in a spring of murky water:(he found it so, means It appeared to him so. Just as we feel it, if we go to beach in the evening it will appear to us as the sun is setting in the sea. the murky water can be sea or a big lake) Near it he found a People (The people who was living near that lake or sea whatever it is): We said: “O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness.”

I hope it may be eazy for you too now.*

I think I should conclude the forum here, since it started going far beyond the subject. What I learned and want to point out is below.

Adam and Eve were not guided

I agree that Adam and Eve sinned. But bible doesn’t say they were guided how to deal with temptations. We need guidance and protection that is why Jesus taught disciples to ask God for it.

Mt. 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

The guidence was indeed given, but Bible fails to give us the clear picture of the event happened. We have to assume and conclude certain points. Since it is our understanding, it may contain error.

Sin

Sin was, is and will personal responsibility. And only that soul should die who sin. Not the son for the father. Not the father for the son. Not Jesus for us. Ezekiel 18:20 gives us clear instruction on it.

Eze:18:20: The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

The fruit

The fruit contained nothing as knowledge of good or evil. The restriction and disobeying was just part of the test that God wanted to check our loyalty to him. There wasn’t any fruit of life. The verses 2:9, 17, 3:22 are giving us wrong information. Like many of you said knowledge of evil wasn’t the experience of evil. If it was, God wouldn’t say,

Gen. 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.

Do you think God would ever experience evil? The whole idea of the knowledge of good and evil is wrong. It doesn’t make any sense. Rather, it is like many of you said, they were perfect by creation itself. They knew good and evil.

Original Sin

In a moment of temptation, Adam and Eve forgot the guidance and instructions of God. They failed to follow the guidance. But they repented for their act. God considered the situation and the repentance and forgiven. God gave them revelations, because man could fall in temptation of Satan anytime.

The transmission of sin

All you must be accepting the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Read the underlined.

404
How did the sin of Adam become the sin of all his descendants? The whole human race is in Adam “as one body of one man.” By this “unity of the human race” all men are implicated in Adam’s sin, as all are implicated in Christ’s justice. Still, the transmission of original sin is a mystery that we cannot fully understand. But we do know by Revelation that Adam had received original holiness and justice not for himself alone, but for all human nature. By yielding to the tempter, Adam and Eve committed a personal sin, but this sin affected the human nature that they would then transmit in a fallen state. It is a sin which will be transmitted by propagation to all mankind, that is, by the transmission of a human nature deprived of original holiness and justice. And that is why original sin is called “sin” only in an analogical sense: it is a sin “contracted” and not “committed”—a state and not an act.

Church teaching you, a 2000 (at least) year old mystery. If Adam and Eve committed a sin, only they were supposed to die. Not their children. This mysterious concept is plainly against revelation of God, Ezekiel 18:20. When Adam and Eve didn’t ask me before they eat the fruit, why should I bear the wickedness of their sin? Do you think God think illogical to say, you have to bear? No. As per what God said, if Adam sinned, only he should die.

What transmitted is the human nature of Adam which was existed even before the event of original sin. Adam and eve contained the potential to sin at creation itself, and God said it was good. Potential to choose good and evil is Good, because that is part of our free will. Our free will is a gift from God that other animals doesn’t have.

Jesus and cross

If original sin doesn’t exist, what is the point in cross?

Eternal life in heaven

If you ask me what I do for it, I would say the below.

In the gospel of Mark (10:17-18. see Luke 18:18-19 also), a man is reported to have asked Jesus,

“Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.”

What was the most important commandment?
• Moses (AS) said ‘God is one and only’ (Not one in three or three in one). –Duet 6:4.
• Jesus (AS) said the same ‘God is one and only’ (Not one in three or three in one). –Mark 12:29.
• Mohamed (SAWS) been told to say the same in Quran ‘God is one and only’ (Not one in three or three in one). –112:1.

This is what I do to inherit eternal life and enter in heaven.
  1. I believe in the message Moses, Jesus and Mohamed brought, God is ONE.
  2. I believe in the angels of God.
  3. I believe in all those messengers who brought the same message.
  4. I follow the commandments, you shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother, and many other which mentioned in Quran and by Prophet Mohamed (SA). Specially the five must do acts (Creed, five time prayer, fasting, Charity to poor, and pilgrimage if possible)
  5. I believe in the Judgment day. I believe, I am accountable for my deeds and that obligate me to remain good. I believe in Ezekiel 18:20 ‘the soul that sinneth, shall die’ which also validated by Jesus in mark 10:18.
  6. I believe everything I receive is from God.
If I do anything against it, I repent sincerely and swear God, not to repeat.
I believe God understands me more than anyone can do.
I believe in God’s ability to understand the deepest and narrowest thought in my heart.

I just follow these and that makes me good enough to enter heaven.

And one more thing,

I believe it is not that easy to enter heaven.

This forum is closed for further discussion but keep it open in your mind.

Thats only if original sin did not occur. But we know sin has occured and that sin is mortally wounding; and for that sin, we need sacrifice. The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, is the only worthy sacrifice.

Intresting enough; when Jesus was crucified, it is not written that after this time Christians continued the practice of giving sacrificail offerings such as dead animals to God for there sins. We have a Good excuse; Jesus was the perfect sacrifice, the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world; and so, there was no need anymore for such a practice.

Judaism conviniently made up an excuse also; their temple was destroyed.

Please tell me; what is Islams excuse?

Excuse? It never happened with Muslims, since Adam. There wasn’t any animal sacrifice demanded by God to cover the sin. There were people who did that but it wasn’t ever demanded. Just think about it; If Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for sin of entire humanity from Adam, If it was the plan even before Adam, why would God demand to kill all those animals for sin of the people who lived before Jesus?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church
We cannot fully understand all the teachings we just accept.
Jesus did not inherit original sin, Jesus the Christ was begotten of the Father, not created like Adam and Eve, He was from the beginning at the right hand of the Father, He came from the Father and the Holy Spirit, the three are one as the Trinity,His humanness came from Mary, a second Eve who was full of grace and blessed, mankind represented by the humanness is what was conquered on the cross the sin of disobedience, Jesus was totally obedient to the Father. This is the truth that the justice and mercy of God was lived and died and resurrected in the person of Jesus Christ for the salvation of man. Dessert
Hi
I would like to say something about the Inherited Sin, a Christian belief. Adam and eve did make a mistake in ignorance, but they never did it willfully and they were pardoned by GodAllahYHWH when they repented and asked forgiveness from GodAllahYHWH. Now to make it hereditary, in my opinion is stretching it too far.
Let us take for the sake of argument that Adam and Eve sinned literally as described in the Old Testament, and were duly punished. As the story goes, the punishment was handed out not only to them but to their entire offspring. Once that punishment was set and delivered, why was there the need for any other punishment at all? Once a sin has been punished, it is done with. Once a judgment has been passed, no one has the right to perpetually add more and more sentences.
In the case of Adam and Eve it is not only that they were severely scolded and if anything more than punished for the sin they had committed, but also the nature of the punishment which was extended to their offspring in itself is highly questionable. It may be termed a very atrocious violation of absolute justice. To be punished continuously for the sins of our forefathers is one thing but to be compelled to continue to sin as a consequence of one’s forefather’s error is simply not acceptable to the psyche of the current human beings in general; they would rather reject it on the very outset.

Let us get down to the hard realities of human experience and try to understand the Christian philosophy of crime and punishment in relation to our everyday experience. Let us suppose a judgment is passed against a criminal, which is far too strict and harsh in proportion to the crime committed. That could, of course, lead to loud and severe denunciation of such a gross unbalanced penalty by every rational man. In view of this, we find it very difficult to believe that the penalty imposed on Adam for his sin, came from a Just God. It is not just a case of an out of proportion penalty. It is a penalty, that according to the Christian understanding of God’s conduct, outlived the life span of Adam and Eve and was extended generation after generation to their descendants. For the offspring to suffer for the punishment of their parents is actually an extension of the violation of justice beyond its ultimate limits. But we are not talking of that either. If we had the bad luck to observe a judgment passed by any present-day judge, making it compulsory for the children, grand children and great grand children, etc. of a criminal to be force by law to continue to sin and commit crimes and be punished accordingly till infinity then what would be the reaction of contemporary society, which has acquired a universal sense of justice through civilization?
Beside it is very much against the attribute of Justice ascribed to the Christian God the Father (just - Deut 32:4; Very strange that this is not the attribute of Son and the Spirit as per Martin Luther’s Small Catechism). And if we accept the Christian common belief then even the Father does not remain Just. So, to me, this is a mistake of the Christian friends which needs correction.
Thanks

The sin of Adam and Eve is an inherited sin not because of a decision by God but because all things are subject to the order of God’s creation. Even God chooses to work within the order he created.

Adam was created perfect because God is perfect. God created man as a self determined creature. This means that Adam was perfectly self determined. That ‘was’ part of our perfection. Our ability to determine our selves is no longer perfect. Any one can see that.

The sin of adam originates in humanity the imperfection of *self *determined by Adam. That act introduced imperfection that was impossible for Adam to re-establish. Shame, guilt, the need to hide and close the heart, the ability to freely offer disinterested gift of self to another.

The loss of Innocense. These were not part of our former perfection. If perfection were something man could return to in of himself then Adam was the man to do it. Since he is the only one besides Eve to have known it.

Of course this was obviously not possible even for the greatest man besides Jesus to have ever lived. Rest assured that not one of us are innocent of that sin either. We would have done it no differently. How could we have? Doing differently isn’t a part of our human experience.

We all commit that sin because it is the most subtle of sins. It goes undetected as this discussion demonstrates. It’s a sin that is the foundation of the wall of shame that seperates us from that Garden. If one admits to an Original Innocense in man it follows that there is an Original sin that causes it to be lost.

I think I should conclude the forum here, since it started going far beyond the subject. What I learned and want to point out is below…

…If original sin doesn’t exist, what is the point in cross?

Continued.
I agree we should conclude as I said before.

However, Khalfan, I believe you are being disingenuous. You Claim you have learned something, then you go on to post your opinions on the discussion. NONE of which you learned here. You have constantly put forth the same arguments to many other posters after they were already explained to you. This leads me to believe you are only trying to discredit the teachings of the church. Which is why I left the quote above in there with regard to the Cross. This is what you are trying to do.

From another poster:
Of course, if you are trying to use this text to discredit the Bible or Christianity you will have a very hard time doing so.
When a person claims to have found a contradiction in the Scriptures, his interpretation usually stems from a personal bias or a limited understanding of Church teaching, ancient cultures, or the Bible as a whole.
I think everyone can see what you are trying to do.

To all others who have posted here. I have learned a great deal with regard to to Adam and Eve, the fall and original sin. And after almost 200 posts, there is more than enough information for Khalfan to understand as well. However, I think it’s time to shake the dust from our feet, as it were.

?? so God never demanded any animal sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins? is this what your trying to tell me?

why would God demand to kill all those animals for sin of the people who lived before Jesus?
It was in preparation for the coming of Jesus; a kind of metaphorical susbstitute; a practice of “sacrifice” which is important for salvation and it is important to God… But i am not wholly sure what the Catholic churches veiw on this is. In fear of being ignorant, I will study before i make another comment.

Peace.

I think everyone can see what you are trying to do.
It is pretty obvious that our poster had a particular agenda. There are a lot more scriptures which illustrate the Christian doctrine on the matter, but I am not sure this person sincerely is interested in the biblical basis on the matter. I was hoping I wasn’t just being judgemental, but as this string developed, I realized that there is no sincere question at all – just a ploy to disprove the bible and cast doubt.

Can anyone help this guy ‘Keikiolu’, to understand his own scriptures? Let me point out some of nonsense he uttered.

Quote:There was no “knowledge” contained in the fruit. The only thing “contained” in the fruit was (LISTEN CAREFULLY!) confirmation that one had chosen to do evil over good upon eating the fruit…!! You are clearly contradicting Genesis.

Gen. 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Uh,… Satan said that in that passage, dude.

Nice trick leaving your…, the speaker of this passage, out of the quote.
Serpent says, the fruit contained the knowledge of good and evil. And God confirmed it in Gen 3:22.
See above.
Gen. 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.
Eve and Adam, in Gen3:22, had “become like ONE OF US” (God), in that they now KNEW (had experience of) good and evil, which they “realized” (knew) when they proved to themselves and to God that they had disobeyed Him by eating of the fruit.

In other words, they were suddenly aware that they had transgressed, which was the only “knowledge” contained in the fruit.

You only KNOW evil by DOING evil, which they hadn’t DONE until AFTER they had eaten of the fruit.

The fruit itself was simply a SIGNAL they they had willed to disobey God. The fruit itself contained NOTHING.
Quote:Before the fall, man knew what good was, because it was simply the environment he existed in. He also knew, abstractly, what evil was because he knew that evil must be something that isn’t good, as God made it known to man that evil existed in contradistinction to good when He said “…the Tree of the KNOWLEDGE of Good and Evil you shall not eat…” (which specifically counterposed good with evil). That is not true. If I say ‘don’t eat Mango and Apple’, how you will understand? Not to eat Mango and Apple together or not to eat Mango or Apple at all? It doesn’t have to be counter posed. That is your another interpretation.
I’m not going to argue with someone who is utterly impervious to simple english.
If the knowledge was experience, would you say they never experienced Good also before eating the fruit? What you interpret for knowledge of evil is also valid for good.
They ONLY experienced good before eating of the fruit. That’s the point.

They knew, before the eating, that evil was something, which they hadn’t experienced yet, that was not-good.

They FULLY knew (experienced) evil when they disobeyed God, and they FULLY knew (experienced) good, in contrast, because now they had a REAL EXPERIENCE of evil to contrast with good.

…continued–>

…continued from above:
Quote:Evil already existed before the creation of man. It was “allowed” to exist, while not being created by God, because it was the natural consequence of His giving the power of free will to the angels. One of whom misused his free will, which “created” sin.

God wants ALL people to choose Him. God allows ALL people to either choose Him, or choose to be damned.

God doesn’t want SOME and not want others. You seem to imply that your god specifically “created” evil so that he would have the “pleasure” of having some to be his slaves, and some to sadistically feed into the fires of hell.

That god is not God. Who saying this to whom? Bible says People of Israel are the chosen people of God. How about others? Even today, Jews all over the world want die in Israel –the Holy land.

Jesus said, he came to the lost sheep of Israel. Regarding the creation of evil, my scripture and yours says the same. It is an act against good.
The very first act of evil was Satan’s. Period.

Satan then decided to infect, if he could, man with his (Satan’s) nasty “creation” by telling lies to Eve.

I don’t see a question in your response, so I won’t answer it.
Quote:The choice to sin, by Eve and Adam, gave mankind a “knowledge” (experience) of evil that was utterly irrevocable and “communicable” by biological birth as witnessed (proven) by the simple fact that humans die.
The passage in Eze18:20 does not apply to “original sin”, simply because even an utterly righteous man will still die (bodily) eventually. Go to any Sunday school. The death mentioned is spiritual, not physical. If it was physical, they were supposed to on the same day.
If you don’t believe in original sin, that’s fine. You don’t have to.

Through the fall, physical death came into the world, for man.

Because of the disobedience of Eve and Adam death has been a physical necessity for mankind.
Quote:The reason is because the sins that are refered to in Eze18 are personal “transgressions” (during a person’s lifetime). Original sin is a universal “taint” that God Himself applied, and only He can remove it. Original sin too was a transgression happened during the lifetime of two persons called ‘Adam and Eve’.
Yes,… and Eve and Adam died (physically) because they disobeyed God, and because they died, we all, their progeny, die physically.

All people who died before Christ ended up in “Sheol” (the big weird holding area), unless God thought otherwise, and when Christ descended to there He essentially “abolished” “Sheol”, and did the specific judgement of each person who had died.

That must have been a wild couple of days…!

Why does everyone reject the idea that there was something about that fruit that DID have the ability to give them knowledge of good AND EVIL? How do WE know it didn’t? It was Eden, the perfect paradise on earth, and probably nothing today comes anywhere near close to the type trees, fruit, plants, etc. in Eden. I have never heard this before – that the fruit didn’t actually open their eyes to this knowledge.

Hi
I agree with you that there are passages in the books of all the revealed religions which are not to be taken literally but in metaphoric/allegoric sense and hence need interpretations. For a better interpretation of the verse 18:86/87 kindly access:alislam.org/quran/tafseer/?page=1537&region=E1&CR=

Your scripture seems to say it contained the knowledge. But it is illogoc to believe so. It is illogic not only for the people of other religions like me, but also for Christians like many in this forum.

Preparation? If God knew, Jesus was the perfect sacrifice, why would God demand some imperfect sacrifices of all those animals?
