Mat 12:39 Who answering said to them: An evil and adulterous generation seeketh a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was in the whale’s belly three days and three nights: so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

Why isn’t anyone asking about the 3 nights Jesus (pbuh) was supposed to be in the heart of the earth?

How do you reconcile this with his alleged resurrection in the early hours on Sunday?
If you read the Gospels you’ll know Jesus is recorded as having spent the Thursday night in agony, sweating blood, thinking of the Crucifixion which was coming and which he could foresee.

In effect he WAS dead and buried already - he could see what was about to happen quite clearly, as if he was already going through it. Which is why he was literally sweating blood over it.

Do we really know precisely how much time Jonah spent inside the whale and that it literally was 72 hours including three periods of darkness? We don’t.

As for you, pedja. Of course part of a day counts as a day. And a day goes together with its night, for the Jews it was the PRECEDING night, since night comes first and then daytime.

If I say ‘I’ll see you in a day’s time’ does it mean ‘I’ll see you precisely 24 hours or more from now?’ Of course not. And it didn’t for the Jews either. Nor for Jesus.

Jesus was not dead on Thursday evening. He was alive. That`s a fact. Why are you trying to read into it? It does not make sense. Why cant you accept that there is a possibility that you are wrong in your understanding of the passage?

Because there is simply no record of the Apostles, who certainly knew the facts, passing on to their followers that Christ rose on a Saturday - but mountains from the earliest days of Christianity that they taught instead that He rose on a Sunday.

We’d have heard of it at some point in the first millenium and a half of Christianity if any of 'em had even hinted any differently!

im not denying Jesus rose on Sunday, im just saying it`s not true he was dead on Thursday evening like you said he was…

“Three days and three nights” is simply Hebrew idiom. The phrase “one day and one night” meant a day, even when only a part of a day was indicated. We see this, e.g., in 1 Sam 30:12-13 (cf. Gen 42:17-18).
Hi
The Jews don’t agree that there is any such idiom in Hebrew, I have asked them. Since this Sign was for the Jews so they are an important party to it; nobody could deny that. They say as per Catholics , this was a special sign for them, so it must make no concession for Jesus, it would had been prudent if he would had been in the tomb for a little more than three complete nights and three complete days or even longer.
Thanks

The problem here with some of my Catholic friends is that they don’t let God speak for himself. If they would have done it they would find a straight passage from the OTBible on every important issue, if Bible is a living book that answers every rational question. When they don’t get support from the Bible, they think they are wiser than God, so they try putting words into God’s mouth first for the Claim and then for the Reason which is usually not found there. One is left wondering if the Catholic God is living and All-Wise.

Did you look at the quoted bible versus that show that indeed this is an idiom.

How do you know when someone is telling the truth?
  1. They have knowledge. For instance, if you ask a mathematician how much one plus one is you know that he has knowledge about it and can trust him
  2. Would he tell you the truth?
  3. Can you check it out?
If a statement fails on these three questions, than it is not true.
You say Jews tell you it is not an idiom.
Would you tell me the truth? As far as you know it you would.
Do you have knowledge? You fail on this one
Can I check it out? Yes and you fail again.

The problem here is you do not understand what the Bible is. It is not a blue print and never was meant to be. It is a written sacred tradition but we also have sacred oral tradition. The Church does not come from the bible. The bible comes from the Church. There are many interpretations of the bible not all are correct. That is why Jesus left us a leader one who could tell us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit what was meant.

The bible comes from the Church.
Hi
I believe in Jesus and what was **sent on him **from GodAllahYHWH or what **he practiced **under instructions from GodAllahYHWH or what he himself wrote or what he himself authenticated before leaving from Galilee alongwith his mother Mary in search of the lost ten tribes of house of Israel who were settled in northern India and the surrouding countries.

I agree with you that NTBible does not come from Jesus, it is mostly a work of Church consisting of accounts pertaining to the life of JesusYeshuaIssa, it is only good as a somewhat historical resource subject to scrutiny of the unbiased Historians together with other historical sources available on equality basis, but rejected by church without any logical arguments.
And of course there are many churches having different views.
I love Jesus and his mother Mary
Thanks

The first and primary source on “Jesus did not die on Cross” and later died naturally is the pristine Word of God revealed on the PromisedMessiahImamMahdi 1835-1908.

Look up the word “onah”. With this concept, a period of 27 hours, in this case would be Friday sundown to Sunday morning, could be considered three days in the Jewish world.

At our church last week we had the Quarant Ore or 40 hours devotion. This is an old devotion which is still thriving in parts of the UK. I am not sure if it ever crossed the pond. it is meant to signify the time Jesus spent in the tomb, namely 40 hours and consists of exposition and adoration, with someone in the church at all times. The sanctuary is ablaze with masses of candles and adorned with profusions of flowers.

I do not think that references to Jonah and the belly of the whale are relevant here as time reckoning is so varied.

You do not agree with me. The Church comes from Jesus. The Bible comes from the Holy Spirit who is part of the Trinity.

What unbiased historians? The unbiased historians say that Jesus died by crucifixion was buried and Ascended into heaven. Mary’s care was given by Jesus to the apostle John. What you claim is a lie. I guess you now fail all three proofs of telling the truth

Hi
He was in agony while he was at Gethsemani, if agony is death or near-death, why you don’t start counting from there, please. Only because that would be only metaphorical and not real, sentimental and not factual.
Thanks

Hi
The point here is that the Sign of Jonah, I think, does not mention how many hours he remained in the belly of the fish, so Jesus was under no obligation/compulsion to mention the " period of three days and three nights". So those who think that time period is the essence of the Sign of Jonah, being human beings, they are mistaken or under some misconception. In addition, it has no direct or indirect relationship with resurrection or ascension. Perhaps the scribes, also human beings, were not correct to write it correctly. I think you don’t have to search for the pretexes/excuses/concession for Jesus to fulfill the Sign. This way you make Jesus even lesser than an ordinary man, to which I cannot concede.
Later I may tell you how the Sign was fulfilled marvelously but naturally.
Thanks

The way I understood this from a priest’s explanation was that in Judaism, any part of a day was counted, even the earliest hours. So Jesus spent late Friday in the Tomb (day 1), Saturday (day 2), and the very earliest house of Sunday (day 3) before Resurrection. Has anyone else heard this explanation before?
Much of the confusion is because the judaic approach to days was different to ours. We count our days from midnight. They counted theirs from 6:00 pm. We think of Tuesday night as the night following Tuesday. They thought of it as the night before Tuesday. The sabbath started at 6:00pm on Friday and ended at 6:00pm on Saturday.

Each day was preceded by 12 hours of night - 6:00pm to 7:00pm was counted as the first hour etc. Then you started counting again from 6:00am for the twelve hours of day. The sixth hour was from 11:00am to noon and the ninth hour was from 2:00pm to 3:00pm.

Maths lesson over. Now read Matthew again!😉

Not really sure why I am interested in this one but if darkness or lack of sunlight is considered night, then Jesus certainly did spend three nights as well as days. from 11:59 PM to 12:00 AM a day has changed and one could argue that it is still night.

It seems that this one can now be explained. Your welcome.

Jesus spoke about the famous “three (3) days” many times; In fact, he spoke about it ten (10) times.

Everytime, it starts with Him being handed over to the authorities. This occured on the Thursday night.

(Mt 16:21; Mt 17:22-23; Mt 20:18-19; Mk 8:31; Mk 9:31; Mk 10:33-34; Lk 9:22; Lk 18:32-33; Lk 24:7; Lk 24:46.)

Hi
By the same process ( three days and three night; whether Jesus gained consiouness from the neardead in this period, or he gained it later) Jonah did not become God, hence , in my opinion likewise JesusYeshuaIssa can’t become God . In fact as I understand by tying or pegging with the period of three days and three nights of Jonah, Jesus rejects any imagination by anyone for deifiying him, he was a human being and wanted to remain human being, only to serve GodAllahYHWH who had chosen him His ProphetMessenger. Others could believe differentty, no comupulsion.
Thanks

Hi
So, it is all confusion in Catholicism, in my opinion, which would remain there if they don’t think rationally, logically and reasonably.
I however respect your faith, which is more of a blind faith, rather than being research oriented.
Thanks
