Did Jeff Sessions make illegal border crossings a sin?

People are in a constant struggle to find a better life for themselves and their children. This is not a sin
It is a sin as said by the priest in the comments at the end of this column. Even Mary and Joseph were legal immigrants and obeyed the law.

Dr. Mirus makes a salient point that I’m sorry to see dismissed so readily.
We must recognize that states, boundaries, and governments are mere conventions. They do not arise from moral truths; rather, they are bound by them. The right of migration, for a moral purpose and in a moral manner, is prior to the State, and prior to citizenship, just like the right to life, the right to marry, the right to raise a family.
Would you argue the opposite, that laws = moral truths?

Civil disobedience is sanctioned by the Church. God’s law comes first.
If Egyptian law had forbidden the entry of immigrants or refugees, would God have commanded Mary and Joseph to flee? Or would he have told them to stay and watch their son slain because the Law came first? If Mary and Joseph had fled with such a law in place, would they have been in a state of sin?

So it’s a sin? How severe is the sin of crossing a border illegally? Is it as bad as having lustful thoughts, watching a pirated movie on the internet, looking at pornography, lying, slander, gossip, having hate in your heart?

How would you judge them?

He cited one priest who called it “at least venial.”

At the rate I’m going with venial sins, I should be kicked out of the country . . .

No Bishop has said it’s not a sin if fact the USCCB says one has to obey current border laws. What they ask for is to change the law. They also excuse the law if the person is in dire hunger or their life is endanger.

Try going to confession and keep saying to Father “I just came here because the grass was greener and wanted what they had in America”. See if Father calls it a sin…you know he will. It could become a mortal sin if other people are affected.

A lot of people cross the southern border and die from heat and thirst.

Or they drown.

It’s extremely dangerous and should avoid it.

Unaccompanied children may be the victims of human trafficking.

But does the Catholic Church aid in these people trying to cross?
The Vatican itself donated at least $20,000 in 2009 to erect a shelter for Central American illegal aliens sneaking through Ixtepec, Mexico, where they hopped on freight trains into our country. Another papal society, Catholic Extension, has poured more than $12 million dollars into ministries along our southern border over the past five years “to ensure that those who are on a journey are protected by the Church and that we advocate on their behalf,” according to the Catholic News Agency.

Your post is heartless.

Do you really think that people are braving unscrupulous coyotes , dehydration, rat-infested tunnels, scorpions, snakes, barbed wire, helicopter flood lights, ICE agents, and the risk of detention centers for the shallow reason of “I just wanted what they have?”

“Well, Father, I came here because I was living in one of the most violent cities in the world and was sort of hoping to actually be rewarded for making an honest living while my children lived to see their 18th birthdays.”

I can rest easy at night knowing that MY parish priest wouldn’t condemn them.

Yeesh.

You should respect the priesthood and support them for a priest is representative of the Catholic church…
Should I respect the bishops, too? Because in another thread, a CAFer is complaining that they’ve launched a campaign called “The Migrant is a Gift.” As in, here’s a gift of venially sinful people for you . . .

Have you considered why Christ’s Church is helping these people? Perhaps it has something do to with compassion and doing the right thing, even if you are not a believer.

Curious, isn’t it???

Why not just stay in Mexico???

Hopping freight trains is dangerous!!! Why would the Church help peopler doing that?

Most people trying to cross into the US are not from Mexico anymore.

Yes it is dangerous, so why would people do that if not out of need?

They come here for the money.

They should stay in Mexico.

But the Mexican government doesn’t want them.

They are from Central America which is not Mexico.

Yes I’m sure they would like to stay in their home countries as well rather than undertake a dangerous trip. Why don’t you reach out to them and find out for yourself why they come here?

It has more to do with filling the pews. The USCCB are trying now to get those Hispanics to attend church as there is a big fall out after the church welcome them in. If the church was not interested in members then they would not have this campaign.

“While approximately 57 million U.S. residents identify as Latino or Hispanic, the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate reports that only 30 million Hispanics identify as Catholic. About 70 percent of U.S. Latinos identified as Catholic in 2006, but today the number is closer to 57 percent.”

So our bishops are only interested in filling the pews? Kind of like only caring about ratings? And it’s not about compassion or following Jesus. What a dark view of the Church and her servants.

"Easily overlooked in the small print of President Donald Trump’s Sanctuary Cities Executive Order signed Wednesday is a clause making it a crime to help an undocumented immigrant.

The sweeping wording is contained in Section 6 of the executive action titled ‘Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States,’ and would appear to include even the actions of legal immigrants seeking to protect undocumented family members."

So why is the Catholic church spending money to help them???

Helping undocumented immigrants now a crime under Trump
