****Did Jesus *himself ***say (claim) he was God?

I’ve heard people say, “I know that Jesus and God are one and the same, but Jesus* himself never said he was God”.*
40 (Jesus said) For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life**, and I** shall raise him (on) the last day."

John 7

21 "Not everyone who says to me**, ‘Lord, Lord,**’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

22 Manywill say to** me** on that day,** 'Lord, Lord**, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your (Jesus) name?”

John 8

19 So they said to him, “Where is your father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

23 He (Jesus) said to them, "You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above**. You belong to thisworld, but I do not belong to this world.

24 “That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins."

58 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you,** before** Abraham came to be, I AM.”

John 13

13 You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so**, for indeed I AM**.

Exodus 3****
14 God replied, “I am who am.” Then he added, "This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you." (I am who am: this utterance is the source of the word Yahweh, the proper personal name of the God of Israel)

"I am" repeated by Jesus (8) times in the Gospel of John:

1- I am the bread of life (Jn.6:35)
2- *I am the light of the world *(Jn.8:12)
3- I am the gate (Jn.10:9)
4- I am the good shepherd (Jn.10:11.
5- I am the resurrection (Jn.11:25)
6- I am the way and the truth and the life (Jn.14:6)
7- I am the true vine (Jn.15:1)
8- *Before Abraham was, I am *(Jn.8:58)…
**

“The Father and I are one."
38 but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize (and understand) that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."
John 10:31-33** **
Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him,
but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” ******
“We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because *** ***you, a mere man, claim to be God
44 Jesus cried out and said**, "Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me, **
45** and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.**
46 I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness.
10 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began***.***
11 [Speaking to the Father]And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are (one).

Matthew 27
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and he questioned him, “Are you the king of the Jews?" 6 Jesus said, "You say so.
Mark 15**
2 Pilate questioned him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” He said to him in reply,**
"You say so."
2 They brought charges against him, saying, “We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Messiah, a king.”
3 Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so.”
33 So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him**, “Are you the King of the Jews?” …**
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants (would) be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here.”
Code:
37 So Pilate said to him, **"Then you are a king?"**
Jesus answered, "**You say I am a king**.
** John 19**
20 Now many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,’ but that he (Jesus) said, 'I am the King of the Jews.”
22 Pilate answered, “**What I have written, I have written.” **
** **“King of the Jews”
Isaiah 9 (Old Testament)**
**5 For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.
6 His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, From David’s throne, and over his kingdom……

46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command?
18 Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”
19 They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’”
20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply, “The Messiah of God.”
21 He directed them not to tell this to anyone.
5 Then he said to them**, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.**”
27 Then he said to them, "The sabbath was made for man, 16 not man for the sabbath.
28 **That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath." **
Exodus 20**
**10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD, your God.
Luke 6**
**46 “Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command?
Luke 9**
**47 Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side
48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”
Luke 21**
**14 Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand,
15 for I myself shall give you wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. **(This dialog is repeated in Matthew **10:20 for it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you - This time Jesus is referred to as “Father”)

21 At that very moment he rejoiced (in) the holy Spirit and said, "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. 9 Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
22 **All **things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him."
23 Turning to the disciples in private he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
24 For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."
Jesus “indirectly” claiming to be God?

J
esus claimed to be the supreme judge who will exercise all judgment.

However, there are at least **50 **verses in the Bible that claim that **God **will judge the earth

Jesus claimed to be the one to (Judge) separate the “sheep from the goats”.

However, the book of Ezekiel says that God will do this (Judge).

Jesus claimed to be the resurrection and the life. He said that He would personally raise everyone from the dead.

These are all attributes of God.

Jesus claimed to be Lord of the Sabbath,

Although the Bible indicates that God held such title.

Jesus claimed the ability to forgive sins.

Even the Jews recognized that this was a function of God alone.

Jesus claimed that He would return in the clouds in glory.

Isaiah makes the same claim for God. Obviously, Jesus was making a claim to deity.

Jesus claimed to be the light of the world who provides salvation.

In the Psalms, David tells us that God is our light and salvation

Jesus said He was the good shepherd, who searches for His sheep

These are claims made of God in the Old Testament.

Jesus claimed to be the fountain of living water

This is a clear reference to what God said of Himself as recorded by the prophet Jeremiah.

Jesus said He would give rest to those who found Him.

The same claim is made of **God **in the book of Exodus.

Jesus claimed to send the Holy Spirit (Helper).

The same claim is made for God.

J
esus said that He raised Himself from the dead,

Even though the Bible says that God did it.

**Isaiah 7 **(Old Testament)
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.
Matthew 1
23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means "God is with us."
1 In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word wasGod.**

From what all you quoted I’d say
He is the second person of a triune God.

Deacon Tony,

Your post -
Re: Did Jesus Say he was God?
Did you really have to ask?
Deacon Tony,
Deacon Tony,

Believe it or not, I was in a conversation recently with a “Catholic” and a “Born- Again Christian” who both said,”It doesn’t say that anywhere in the bible”. I felt compelled to research the issue and post it here for anyone else with doubts. Thanks for your post.

God Bless,

Only in the gospel of John do we find explicit statements on Jesus claiming to be God.

The question was did Jesus say he was God. Don’t muddy the water with non sequitors.

Being the Messiah does not imply divinity.
Being the King of the Jews does not imply divinity.

Hello hermit,

I wasn’t trying to “muddy the water”. I was listing Bible verses, that I though might be relevant to this discussion.
Isaiah 9 (Old Testament)

****5 For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.

6 His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, From David’s throne, and over his kingdom……

The above verses referring to Jesus, seem to refer to him as a king.
27 Then he said to them, "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.

28 That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath."

Exodus 20
****
****10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD, your God.

When you compare the above verses found in Mark 2, with the verse found in Exodus 20. It appears that by Jesus saying, he was the “Lord even of the sabbath” Jesus is saying he is God. In Exodus, God is the Lord of the Sabbath.

****14 Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand,

15 for I myself shall give you wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. **(This dialog is repeated in ****Matthew **10:20 for it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you - This time Jesus is referred to as “Father”)

Compare these two verses (above)

Luke – Jesus gave wisdom in speaking.

Matthew- The Father is speaking. (same story, same context)

hermit, thanks for your post.
God Bless!

DEICIDE.
If Jesus was God, than we, humanity killed God. Not that it would be physically possible to Kill God because in Fact Jesus Rose from the dead. I am a Good Catholic of 35 years, I have faith but How can Jesus Be God. This was a story we have heard 2000 years ago, written down. I belive all good thinks we have today we have because of Jesus. I just Cant Fathom Jesus was God. I know if the things were written, he healed the sick and did the impossible and everyone that has followed him since, is greater in heaven than Saint John the Baptist.

We would know %100 if he was God but we are only human and along way from home. If we are open to God, Jesus humanity, redemption and Christian brotherhood. If we act on those basic principles than in faith and acts, we will be baptized in the Holy Spirit and in Fire. We are not only far away from God but below 7 quiors of angels and all saints. So for as to have the faith of a mustard seed and some love it will allow us to conquor all things.

Bill A, I hope this helps:
The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us:
461………Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on the cross.
468……our Lord Jesus Christ, one of the Trinity, Thus everything in Christ’s human nature is to be attributed to his divine person as its proper subject, not only his miracles but also his sufferings and even his death: “He who was crucified in the flesh, our Lord Jesus Christ, is true God, Lord of glory, and one of the Holy Trinity”
469 The Church thus confesses that Jesus is inseparably true God and true man. He is truly the Son of God who, without ceasing to be God and Lord, became a man and our brother:

**Was Jesus - God while he was on Earth as man? **

**Jesus was both “human and divine.” **

“Divine”** can be substituted for “God**”, he was “human and God.”

John 1
1 In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Luke 1

Matthew 2

1 When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,

11 and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Perhaps you both are aware that this question was debated in the early Church. Look up arianism to see about those (I think) who said Jesus wasn’t human.

Look at the behavior of the apostles and disciples who don’t really act like they caught on to anything until after Pentecost.

I don’t think it was Christ’s purpose to show up on the scene and say “I am God.” We see rather plainly that he would have been “taken out” for blasphemy, before His mission was complete. We know and accept that Jesus is God, based on scripture AND TRADITION.

John Paul II said in Crossing the Threshold of Hope that some people don’t believe in Jesus because of the way He revealed Himself. That’s what you’re saying here. Nice that you agree with the Pope on this one.

Are you saying that you do not believe Jesus is God? If so, this contradicts your statement that you are a good Catholic because by definition, a Catholic worships our Triune God (which includes Jesus.)

BayCityRickL, Thank you for you response.

Arianism

A heresy which arose in the fourth century, and denied the Divinity of Jesus Christ.

DOCTRINE

First among the doctrinal disputes which troubled Christians after Constantine had recognized the Church in A.D. 313, and the parent of many more during some three centuries, Arianism occupies a large place in ecclesiastical history.

Philippians 2:5-8

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.
