Yes, but as Paul wrote, “Who hopes for what he already has?” I believe you are speaking of prophecy that has yet to come true. I’m speaking of something different: Prophecy that has already come true:
I was also talking about the same thing, and so was Paul, whom I had quoted. The resurrection of Christ confirmed the hope of them that believed in the OT prophecies of the reality of that resurrection. That is what Paul was saying.
The apostles always appealed to the evidence of the resurrection as the reason why people should put their trust in Jesus to save them. The resurrection of Jesus is the best documented event in all ancient history, Zer.
You are very much mistaken. There is
NO external evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If there was, everyone would believe. You are confusing “evidence” with
testimony! The Apostles
testified that Jesus rose from the dead, and cited themselves as being the
eyewitnesses of it; but they did not produced any “evidence” for it. Here are a couple of interesting examples. When Paul appeared before Greek philosophers at Mars Hill in Athens, he preached to them Jesus and His resurrection:
Acts 17:
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men,
in that he hath raised him from the dead.
32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some
mocked: and others said,
We will hear thee again of this matter.
Paul did not produce any “evidence” that Jesus rose from the dead. He
testified to them that He did. They had the choice of believing it or not believing it. They chose not to believe it, and Paul left them. Here is another quote:
Romans 10:
9 That if thou shalt
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Notice it is a matter of
belief. There is no evidence involved. You either
believe in the
testimony of those who
claim to be the
eyewitness of His resurrection, or you don’t. There is no “evidence” involved. The fact that Paul and other Apostles said that they “saw it happen,” is no evidence. It is a
testimony, which could either be true or false. It is up to you to decide whether you want to believe it or not to. I am also in the same situation as you are. There is no difference.
So, yes, i have the hope that i will be resurrected from the dead. I have this hope because i know, beyond a shadow of a reasonable doubt, that Jesus Himself rose from the dead.
I am glad that you believe that He rose from the dead. But how do you
know that He rose from the dead? You have no direct evidence. If such evidence existed, everyone would believe. You have
faith that He did, not evidence. You trust in the testimony of those who claim He did in the NT. That is called faith, not evidence.
I’m not saying that someone cannot have a faith in Christ based on subjective experience without considering the objective evidence. I’m just saying that for some people, like myself, the path to trusting Jesus began with looking at the external proof and the internal witness came after i believed by reason of the evidence i found.
But there is no “external proof”. You are trusting what is stated in the NT, without any evidence. That is called faith, not evidence.
Do you see how my own experience is different from your own, but is a valid way to draw near to God and learn to trust Him?
Your experience is not different from mine! We are both exercising faith! You are just making the mistake of thinking that your faith is based on “evidence,” when in fact it is not. It is based on the testimony of the writers of the NT.
I’m guilty as charged! Please forgive me for missing your reply. The question i’d ask in response is this: You or i might believe we have acquired the Spirit of God, but how do we know we are not deceived about this?
The one who has the Spirit of God will
know that he is not deceived. The one who has
not the Spirit of God may
think that he is not deceived; but he will not
know that he is not deceived.
