Did LDS Church contribute to restoration of Salt Lake Cathedral?

Steph, your right, that is one principle that you can follow in giving aid, which is exactly why i’m annoyed with Andgtoo. That was the very reason the church never published a single thing about it before like 2006. They wanted to follow a principle taught in the bible. no matter how big the program got. It was only this year did they mention any aid in dollar amount and they had their reasons. (i’m looking for it) or even how many humanitarian missionaries they have.

We would gladly teach anyone willing to listen these simple principles but i wish the actual work would have stayed quiet.

I couldn’t find it, but when the humanitarian website was launched, they had several articles that talked about how beneficiaries and other agencies was begging the church to publish their aid information so that other people would be aware of their situation and also have a desire to donate aid. That’s when the church decided to change published information that could benefit the beneficiary

I watched a show on PBS about the Mormons. They showed them helping after the hurricane in New Orleans and they all had “Mormon” t-shirts on. Very humble indeed.

How did we know the LDS Church contributed to the restoration of Salt Lake Cathedral?

I learned here they do give a ton. And i mentioned that several times. I thought i knew the majority of the aid programs like CRS but i was way off. Naturally, the next question is about effectiveness and the actual aid money.
Let me again state that after reading about the activities of CRS in the Phillippines I find your anecdote questionable.

My experience with CRS was just with donating through local parish here for over 1 year. I forget the name of the fund. But you “sponser” a family so we chose a family in the Philippines

I’m no expert, but I would say that the LDS church spends most of it’s money building more temples. What else does it do with all the money it gets? Nobody seems to know. Very very secretive.
What the LDS Church does with its money is their business. It is not anybody else’s business. But if you are interested in the humanitarian relief efforts of the Church, that can be known, and I gave you a link to find that out.

The LDS Church is a fast growing Church, and its financial requirements are also great. We don’t just build temples. We build ordinary chapels or houses of worship somewhere in the worked at the rate of one a day. You work out roughly how much that would cost, including their upkeep and maintenance and servicing. BYU is heavily subsidised by the Church; otherwise it would be too expensive for most LDS students to go to (which is what most of the students are). The Church has a good income from the tithes and offerings of its members; but their outgoings are equally great.

Let’s see, the hurricane that caused such devestation in New Orleans was Katrina in 2005, so I guess the research for the the reasons for the “change” in reporting Mormon humanitarian aid should be looked at from that year and not after 2006. Perhaps that will help in finding the reasons, however, I’m pretty sure that there was a report of some LDS aid for the victims of the hurricane Andrew in Florida many years back. (Had a friend who was stationed.)

right, so i’m a year off. Thanks for trashing a 50 year history of staying quiet

this is crazy. it all sounds like god loves me more than you cause my church gives more charity. Knock it off. really. Grow up. this is why there is so many problems because there is so little understanding and too much pride. And thats coming from a non religious person.

The principle was to not declare what you do in terms of aid because you get your reward from man, which is praise and what not. (somewhere in the scriptures) Not that the catholic church or many churches go around paradeing what they do, the LDS church just wanted to keep simple acts of aid quiet and still does to a very large degree.

I’m just bringing up all this information to explain other simple principles of humanitarian aid that is important, like making your aid money effective.

what about christians wearing crosses? Humble I see no difference than a mormon wearing a shirt that says mormon.

no I’m not. I should have said other christians. Mormons don’t or shouldn’t have any problem with the symbol of the cross.

lol, take that up with your fellow mormon falisrm, he’s the one pointing to lds numbers for whatever reason.

no, lds is not the fastest growing church

Perhaps you might want to inform them of this. I was informed (by a Mormon) that showing any sort of deference for the cross was like “glorifying” an electric chair or any object of death. And you’ll note that there isn’t a cross on any of their ward buildings.

Rebecca, look I’m not a mormon. Get it? Now? I do live in utah, but does that mean I must be a mormon? There are many things that have become quite clear here.
  1. Don’t got to a catholic to find out about mormons or protestants or buddists or muslims and same goes vice versa.
  2. There are absolute lunatics in every religion. People need to understand that just because someone is of a particular faith that doesn’t mean they aren’t human and being human they are subject to the laws of nature (desires, hunger, gravity etc.) And everyone in their own religion is going to point out and argue about what is wrong with the other religions.
3.You are wasting time arguing to try and convince one another that the other is wrong. Where does that get you? Anger and hate certainly aren’t christian traits. So you might as well talk about something else cause neither of you will win.
  1. Anyone looking for problems will find it. the headline of this thread for instance. Have any of you catholics thought that the contribution was just an act of kindness from one christian religion to another? There are those of you who think well there was an alternative motive. I doubt it, but there will be no convincing you. Like I said you go looking for trouble, conspiracies etc. you’ll find it.

I can see what your mormon source is saying. Can’t you? The cross to the romans and to many civilizations even farther back was used as a tool of pain and humiliation. Much like an electric chair or any tool of death common today. Say guns were around and Jesus was executed by firing squad. Would catholics/protestants be wearing a symbol of a gun? we will never know. You must try to understand where people are coming from and not go through life with blinders. If you’ll study history even early christians did not use the symbol of the cross it was a fish. No where in the bible does it mention the symbol of the cross as the symbol for christianity. From my mormon source I was told that the early believers looked beyond the crucifixtion to the resurrection. Towards the promise of life given to all only through him. And I was told mormons do not focus on the crucifixtion although as vital as it was, they prefer to look towards that promise of life. does that sufficiently answer your question?

I was talking to zerinus…i agree this conversation has been rather pointless.

I believe that you aren’t Mormon, why do you think that I don’t? I do believe your religious “knowledge” has been influenced by Mormonism. But hey, my daughter is non-mormon, non-religious (I raised her atheist she says she is agnostic). But she knows more about Mormonism than many Mormons do, just because we live in Utah and all of our relatives are Mormon. Her knoweldge of religion is very much colored by Mormonism.

I live in Utah, I go to the Cathedral, I think it is just great that the Mormons helped out. I don’t believe there was an alternative motive.

Thank you Rebecca. I believed you implied me being a mormon in your previous post and you said “lol, take that up with your fellow mormon falisrm, he’s the one pointing to lds numbers for whatever reason.” You must understand some confusion on my part. Now why can’t christians get along? Christianity should be a common banner to unite under, a private club to exclude one or the other. Lets learn from history shall we? Humans no matter what color, race, creed etc. are human there is no getting around that fact, but what happens when one race says we are humans and you are not, or we are right and you are wrong, when they both share similar charactaristics. Take the nazis or 'aryans" and their extermination of the jews. I’m sure there were plenty of jews who where blonde haired and blue eyed, but because they were of the jewish faith they were considered not human. This is an extreme example, I feel i’ve got my point across. Lets unite under Christ. (for I am thinking of joining a religion.)
