Did the Buddha talk about God?

Correct. The Abrahamic God tends to be placed outside the universe, while the Buddhist gods are placed inside it.

Since the Buddhist universe is “all that exists”, including the non-material parts like the heavens, the Abrahamic placement does not make sense. Anything outside of “all that exists” obviously does not exist.

YMMV (to put it mildly!)

rossum
God is outside of “all that exists” in a way precisely (mathematically) similar to the way 0 is outside the system of numbers.

The gods are a race like us. I am a descendant of Thor Odin’s son from my father’s father’s mother’s side. I am serious now. Hollywood was founded by Odin when he went by the name Charlie Chaplain. It was Zeus who wrote our declaration of Indepence in the US when he was in human form with us.
… Umm. What?

In Buddhism He is.
Sorry, no. Rossumism, sure. Not Buddhism. Or else, you show me where the Buddha made any mention, at any time, of Yahweh.
He is very long lived, very powerful but He is one of the many many gods.
That is not who Yahweh is at all. So this is evidence that you don’t know what you’re talking about.
If you discuss with a Buddhist, then you must expect to be exposed to standard Buddhist teachings, such as anatta.
I understand anatta quite well, while you appear confused as to what the Buddha actually taught.

I invite you to educate yourself better as to what you say you believe:

Let me know if you have difficulty locating specifically where your Rossumism contradicts Buddhism, and I will point it out to you. Initially, you appear to be a Nihilist, and the Buddha was not.
If you don’t wish to follow that teaching then that is your choice.

rossum
Wishes and choices are a little different, one from the other, but, I am indeed free to choose to fulfill any wish I may have that is within my power. For the moment, I wish to help you to discover the truth, both about what you believe and about what I believe, since you seem slightly confused as to both.

For whatever it may be worth to you, I accept as true, the Four Noble Truths, and, I follow the Eightfold Path. Does that make me a Buddhist? No, I am free of the fetter of attachment to my own opinions; in particular, I do not adhere to any of the “-isms,” as adherence to such is a fetter.

Well being a buddhist(and catholic) I’ve been around long enough to learn alot. There are specifically name buddhas too in the hells preaching. I can’t remember their names but they’re in the cold and hot hells. Read “pureland buddhism”. I’ve been a Tibetan buddhist since before I became catholic. Remember our jobs as catholics is to witness. All will not come to Christ and they’re not doomed if they don’t. That’s a christian selling point. Jesus said to the Lord all those you have choose to come to me. God decides who comes.
My question was very specific. Where are you getting the information that Maitreya will be number five out of one hundred and four?

And I would ask you how you know or what makes you think that is anywhere near accurate, but I know there is no way for you to know anything like that.

Jesus could say this speaking of himself as the son. The buddha could’ve said the same words and it would be as true. It is not robbery to be called equal with God for any of us we are in his image. The Son is the Son. The Word is the Word. Look and you will see! He who has eyes to see let him see.
You’re in trouble.

Nirvana is not annihilation lol. It is the cessation of suffering. Read the Theologica Germanica. To be awake is to be equal with God. “Only one can be God” is a non seq.
Here, billcu1. Read up a bit, please.

Remember that we fight, not against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalities. The error is very subtle and extremely easy to fall into and difficult to defend against. The only recourse we have is to the Magisterium. But Sri Caitanya may be able to help you a little.

“Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my
heavenly Father.” Matthew 10:32-33

“He who believes and is baptized will be saved; he who does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:16

“If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us.” 2nd Timothy 2:11-12

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” Matthew 22: 37-40

God does not decide who comes. We are all invited, and we are all free to come into the light or go into the darkness.

I think rossum’s idea of buddhist gods is closer to our idea of good or bad angels. If so, that would remove all the confusion. Buddhism then is essentially atheistic.

That’s only if Buddha was also a victim of scientism, the view that all we can know is what we can observe and test through our senses.
You misunderstand me; my apologies for not making myself clearer. “All that exists” includes both the material and non-material components of the universe: matter, energy, heavens, hells, gods, gandhabbas, kinnaras etc.

rossum

Makes no sense in the way you understand it you mean. In our understanding, your idea of a god makes no sense us. Pretty much contridictions of each other really.
That is because I am Buddhist and you are Catholic. We start from different positions.

rossum

God is outside of “all that exists” in a way precisely (mathematically) similar to the way 0 is outside the system of numbers.
Then you are saying the God does not exists. If He exists then He is a member of the set {All that exists}. If He does not exist then He is not a member of that set.

Or else, you show me where the Buddha made any mention, at any time, of Yahweh.
I have already quoted the Brahmajala sutta, or do you know of another omnipotent creator deity?
That is not who Yahweh is at all. So this is evidence that you don’t know what you’re talking about.
I am not Christian. You should not expect me to follow Christian doctrine when it contradicts the truths of Buddhism:

“Impermanent are all compound things.”
When one realises this by wisdom,
then one does not heed ill.
This is the Path of Purity.

– Dhammapada 20:5

Just like everything else, YHWH is impermanent.
I understand anatta quite well
Then why were you surprised when I denied the existence of a soul?

Who revealed the existence of heavens, hells, and gods to Buddha? And if these are immaterial places or beings, why do you believe they exist?

I still don’t get how the Buddha would deal with the Big Bang. If the universe was created on day one, as science tells us, how would Buddhism accommodate that knowledge to the system? Christianity accommodates it quite easily in Genesis.

Then you are saying the God does not exists. If He exists then He is a member of the set {All that exists}. If He does not exist then He is not a member of that set.

I am saying you are displaying your attachment to your concepts of “exists” and “does not exist,” whereas God is actually beyond description.

Those attachments of yours are fetters.

And I would ask you how you know or what makes you think that is anywhere near accurate, but I know there is no way for you to know anything like that.
My Lama told me that. It’s not a secret.

You’re in trouble.
Then I know I have been successful in teachings. They that have ears to hear let them hear. He who seeks will find. You’re fine where you are I can see.

He who seeks will find and become troubled, then astonished and reign over all.-- Jesus

You’ve got to get up and out of the comfort zone to find.

I am saying you are displaying your attachment to your concepts of “exists” and “does not exist,” whereas God is actually beyond description.

That’s right. They think 0 means not exist. 0 means beyond all.

Im not sure where YHVW came from. Abraham was a cannanite and they followed Baal. But we really don’t know the name of the God of abraham. Abraham was a diviner we know along with his brother in the animals they chose to sacrifice. Just to throw out there 🙂
