Really?Nevertheless, there are some who insist on it, even to the point of saying someone “obviously isn’t a Catholic” because they just said “Mary”.

I agree. It’s like how we Catholics get tired of others lecturing us about what we “really” believe (e.g. that we “worship Mary”).No, I get fed up with Catholics telling us what we believe, and what is important to us, based on this one individual they talked to once, or read once, who happened to agree with their point of view.
A good discussion on unity between people who respect each others opinions and don’t try to dictate the position of others can be quite good.
It’s kind of like people who obsess over capitalizing pronouns referring to God.I realize this is more of an intra-Orthodox discussion, but just to add my perspective as a Catholic, I’ve never really understood this.
I remember well a conversation on this forum a few years, in which one poster made mention of “Mary”, and then another poster replied “Well you’re obviously not a Catholic, since you’re so disrespectful of the Blessed Mother as to call her ‘Mary’!” (That may be a slight paraphrase but it’s pretty close.)
I don’t mean this an attack against Mickey et al, I just find all that insistence a little strange. Cultural difference?
Gosh. I do that, and am always careful to do so. But I know that if others don’t, it is not because they disrespect God, More likely, it is because they are typing so fast they don’t think about it (not that they are intentionally disrespecting God). It’s kind of like people who obsess over capitalizing pronouns referring to God.
The fathers did not obviously have capital letters, so I tend not to worry if I left a ‘he’ uncapitalized here and there.Gosh. I do that, and am always careful to do so. Well, actually I think they used ALL capital letters. But point taken. The fathers did not obviously have capital letters, so I tend not to worry if I left a ‘he’ uncapitalized here and there.
Yes, imagine what the internet would look like today had miniscule letters not come to be.Well, actually I think they used ALL capital letters. But point taken.

I studied that in History in High School but forgot. I had to study it again. I think it did not result, so, repeating in the same structure, would be bad. It’s a shame you weren’t born in the 16th century. The organizers of the Union of Brest-Litovsk could have really used you.
In the 21th century, however, a repeat of Brest-Litovsk is highly unlikely.
Come on, you are kidding and inventing !.No, I get fed up with Catholics telling us what we believe, and what is important to us, based on this one individual they talked to once, or read once, who happened to agree with their point of view.

I would disagree. Eastern and Latin Catholics do not have the same beliefs about the Immaculate Conception. I concede they have the same Faith, but not the same beliefs.Come on, you are kidding and inventing !.
No Catholic tells you what to believe !!! We believe the same !!!.
The subjects of discussion are so small and so ridiculous that makes us wonder why is it so …
Even the subject of the Immaculate Conception. In my room I have an image of the Theotokus and that image is in the desktop of my computer.I love that icon more than the images of Our Lady in the West. Easter Devotion to the Mother of God is so great that the subject is not matter for discussion unless we just like to discuss!

But I want you together with us, yes, I want.
Some of the arguments are small, I agree, and we certainly do agree on considerably more than we disagree on, I agree. But there are real differences there. Additionally there is a fine line between asserting your opinion on something, and forcing it on others, you may mean to do the first, but it can come off as the second.Come on, you are kidding and inventing !.

… We would all be shouting at each other?Yes, imagine what the internet would look like today had miniscule letters not come to be.
Boy, if I had to remember all the stuff of the last 2000 years…Well, thanks I guess. That’s a little confusing (assuming your talking to me) since your profile says that you’re Catholic.
Unless you think that traditionalists aren’t real Catholics.![]()
(Seriously, I myself can remember a time when I thought the SSPX, at least, wasn’t really Catholic. But I digress.)
You are for sure Byzantine: differences, differences, differences…Some of the arguments are small, I agree, and we certainly do agree on considerably more than we disagree on, I agree. My only issue with the Immaculate Conception is that it is held dogmatically. I really don’t care whether or not people actually believe it, and I don’t think it contributes to salvation one way or another.
On a lighter note, I just finished doing some research for a major purchase I’ll be making soon, and as part of that research I was reading forums on the subject. It was quite nice to see people having fights that I have no dog in.![]()
Better be careful with that particular insult, Pfaffenhoffen. Remember that some Catholics are Byzantine too.You are for sure Byzantine: differences, differences, differences…
Try not to get too hung up on compass directions. What it comes down to is that Catholics believe that Mary was immaculately conceived, Eastern Orthodox believe that she wasn’t. I couldn’t say whether the other eastern churches, such as the Oriental Orthodox and the ACoE, do or not.Trebor135 said:I’m thoroughly puzzled as to how the Western doctrine of the immaculate conception can be understood as compatible with Eastern theology.
See, you seem to be crossing the line of forcing, and stating an opinion. You are for sure Byzantine: differences, differences, differences…
Would you mind to tell at least ONE similarity ???
Likening Catholics to Orthodox is being ecumenical.I mean aren’t you Catholics always on about how different you are than Anglicans? Why the double standards?
Not a complete waste.Likening Catholics to Orthodox is being ecumenical.
Likening Catholics to Anglicans is just insulting.
(Sadly, attempts at humors on this forum are generally a complete waste of time.)
