Diocese limits Communion under both kinds

We can’t withhold the traditions of the faith just because of the heresies. Perhaps hundreds of years ago there was no easy way to disseminate the proper catechesis and this was necessary. But not today. Most people just jump right in to the Vatican website and read stuff off of there.

Besides, saying that the heresy is still alive today proves the point that withdrawing the Cup did nothing to prevent it.
Both very good points.

With that logic, wouldn’t a large Host be better to consume since you would get more of Christ? But that’s heresy.
No and yes. Yes, such thinking would be contrary to Church teaching and no, that is not where my logic leads. READ my post. I’m talking about the external sign, not the reality of what we’re receiving.
Newbie,

The Church defines the reception of both species to be a fuller sign. We all agree on that.

The question then becomes, what does the Church mean by it being a ‘fuller sign’, what does the Church mean by something being a ‘sign’ at all.
  • Modern Catholic Dictionary - Fr. John Harden, SJ
We can see what the Church means when we consider a street sign. A sign that says “Main St.” tells us where we can find Main Street or that we have arrived at Main St.

A Sign, therefore, has value only when one is searching for the greater reality (Main St) or is unsure if one has arrived\achieved that reality ( if one is, or is not on Main St)

Likewise the Sign value of recieving both species indicates (points towards) the greater reality of the Eucharist, that Christ is Present in Body and Blood in the Eucharist.

But if one has found that greater realtity of the Eucharist ( of which there can be NO greater reality) and if one is sure of that reality, then the sign has little meaning.

That doesn’t not mean that the sign value is of value to other, but our GOAL is to move past the need for sign and to focus on the reality.

When one is sure of the reality ( that we are driving along Main St) we don’t need to look for the signs telling us that.

That is why I have no particular need to recieve in more than one species. I recognize that I am recieving the full, complete Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ, the Creator and Savior of the Universe. I do not need a sign telling me that His Blood is also present, and that it is living, flowing Blood.

So why the ‘sign’ is fuller’ is adds nothing, nor can it add. One recieves Christ who is God almighty, there can be nothing ‘better’
You mean “…while the ‘sign’ is ‘fuller’…”, right?

Yes, I agree in total with what you’ve said.

However, using the streetsign analogy, the bigger and brighter the sign, the more clear the direction to that reality, such reality being ultimately a mystery which we are incapable of fully grasping, no? 🙂

I too do not feel a need to receive under both species, but I get something more out of the “experience”, for lack of a better word, when I do. I like to have a bigger, more brightly lit street sign.

Well, if you read post #41, you will see that the problem still exists.
Would you mind terribly explaining what problem you think exists in my thinking on this subject (since it is my post #41)?

Large and bright street signs are great, but even the largest and brightest street sign has little value once you know for certain you have arrived at Main St.

In fact, having that bright signs can even be a distraction.

Remember again the purpose of a sign
Something that leads to somethings else. It may be an arbitrary on conventional sign that has a connection with what is signified. Or it may be a pure sign that leads to knowledge of something with out it being first known
It is supposed to lead us to something else. If we have recieved Christ Himself, what else can we be lead to, should be lead to?

The sign can lead us to knowledge, but if we already have the knowledge, and are certain of it, what purpose does the sign serve. It serve no purpose, we have achieved the reality, we have the knowledge the sign pointed towards.

So it might be a fuller sign, but a gazillion times zero still equals zero.

You might have a personal preference for the experience, but that would mean that you are not using the sign in the way the Church intents. A Sign should either move us towards the reality, or allow us to gain greater knowledge of the reality it signifies.

The experience you refer to is not what the sign signifies.

I stand opposed to such a direction. The Scriptures tell us that Jesus blessed both the bread and the cup. Any celebration of communion neds to offer both to be in compliance with our Lords instruction.

The parishes I’ve regular gone to (New YOrk Archdiocese) don’t give out the wine. When I’ve been to mass in Orlando, and Massachussetts, the wine is given.

I think we should defer to our bishops on what constitues a compliance with our Lord’s instruction in this instance. In many countries, including my native Poland, the Precious Blood was never offered to the faithful. I experienced it for the first time in the U.S., though I still don’t partake.

No I don’t like this. Though distributing the Precious Blood is not neccessary for mass it is clearly preferred if practical, per Vatican II. It is most fitting for the faithful to receive under both species.

I for one usually don’t take Communion under both species. I was taught that one receives Jesus fully in the Eucharistic Host.

I am grateful we have Bishop Olmsted to lead our diocese to a greater reverence for Our Lord. What was supposed to be saved for special occassions had become common place in the US.

Blessings.

This is so sad that the church in Phoenix can do something like this. What can one say to this turning away from Jesus’s wishes and from the early (real) tradition of the Latin rite. The first time I received communion under both species in the Latin Rite was at my high school graduation in 1968. What a wonderful memory and a wonderful grace. Communion under both species has continued to be a great grace and gift. It has truly helped me to understand the real meaning of the mass. What is the purpose of not giving communion under both species? Here in Michigan, receiving communion both species is an accepted and expected practice. Unfortunately our parish was assigned an order from Europe who immediately let us know (explicitly) that they are more holy than we Americans. They promptly took communion under both species away from us. We all felt such a loss. We were actually told that communion under both species was only for the Apostles and that we all have to return to how it was before the Second Vatican Council. The bishop is aware of their heresy but continues to keep them because he needs priests. The church is really entering a dark period. We are having a defective translation of the mass which is arkward at best and unintelligible in parts pushed down our throats. Now there are leaders in the Church who want to take away the great gift that Jesus gave us in receiving both his Body and Blood. I am sorry, I am not a second class Christian or person. During the wonderful Second Vatican Council, it was the eastern rite bishops who pushed the Latin rite bishops to return to our ancient tradition of giving communion in both kinds. We need someone like that now. Isn’t there some bishop somewhere who will speak the truth about what is happening to the Church. By the way, extraordinary ministers of the Eurcharist are a wonderful thing. It is great to see how reverent they are. Certainly far above what many priests were when I served the latin mass in grade school.

Know that the azcentral article is secular, so don’t expect it to get all technical terms right. Tomorrow, I’ll probably have to respond to a letter to the editor saying how outrageous this is.

Receiving under both species is a good thing. I understand your problem when they denied you both species, and if your Bishop allows it, you should talk to the CDWDS. But receiving both species isn’t necessary. Just the consecrated bread or the consecrated wine will do just fine, as you still receive Jesus’ body and blood, soul and divinity.

For people like me who have celiac disease, cannot consume anything with wheat, that is sad and unfair.

if its temporary, like concern during cold and flu season, then its understandable.

And BTW, EVERYTHING is present in the HOST: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity.

My parish has never offered the Blood and it hasn’t hurt us. Plus, it would require some more acolytes or deacons.

my sister’s parish in another diocese offers it and I do not take it when I visit and go to Mass (which is rare at her parish) as I know EVERYTHING is in the host.

My brother in law is a convert and one year at Christmas, we went to Mass at my brother’s parish in my diocese. He was looking all over for the Blood being offered. i had to tell him that everything is in the Host, its okay if you don’t take both species.

Most likely, you can still arrange to receive by consecrated wine if you have celiac disease. The priests and bishops would understand. If not, then it’s time to contact the CDWDS.
