Discerning homosexuality & same sex marriage in the light of the gospel.

I hesitate to enter this thread, as someone who doesn’t believe in the truth of your gospel (or any religion for that matter). However, having a good familiarity with your bible it is pretty clear that it views homosexuality as sinful (and arguably just being homosexual violates this standard, not solely homosexual conduct since I believe Paul speaks out against effeminate males).

The question is how literally do you take this message, and how accurate are these translations? I understand the theist believes god somehow ensured the accuracy of this message through the ages, and protects his church from error. However, just to mention the obvious, the church at one time believed the earth stood at the center of the universe (so obviously this infallibility cannot mean the church is right at all times, it can only mean when there is error it will eventually be steered back on course). As far as renditions of the biblical text, the only manuscripts we have are copies of copies written a century (or longer) after the alleged facts they describe occurred.

Moreover, how far fetched is it to think Paul was prone to hyperbole (and not everything he said was divinely inspired). It seems to me Jesus reversed all the dogmatic (and pharisaic) religious practices of the Jewish people; and ushered in real a paradigm shift. However, some of what I’m reading here sounds little different from how a pharisee might have treated a sinner (of whatever sort). So is it really consistent with the redemptive message of the Gospel to imagine a god who creates people who are, by nature, homosexual (just to destroy them)? I suppose if you’re a Calvinist you would have no problem taking this view, but again is this really consistent with a message of love, a god who forgives man despite his many imperfections, and benevolence?

At some point something has to give (logically speaking anyway). Love and mercy is simply not consistent with creating people for the sole purpose of tossing them into an eternal furnace (although I would argue tossing anyone at all, even the worse of men, into an eternal furnace is sadistic).

That is not what Calvinists believe - or any other Church AFAIK. AFAICS, Infinite Divine Love is compatible with eternal damnation - no Church I know of teaches that God necessitates or even causes people to commit the sins that damn them. If anything, there is a Hell for damned sinners because there is a God of Infinite Love: abolish God, & you abolish Hell.

God does forgive: but how if a man refuses to be forgiven, & finds the very idea an obscenity ? If he chooses, lives in, & dies in, the self-willed & insane delusion that is deliberate & free & impenitent rejection of the only True Source of all love & grace & mercy ? The problem is that you are asking God to force us to accept His mercy freely - but how can we freely accept from God what we freely and deliberately reject when He offers it ? Is God obliged to knock the universe out of synch by destroying the law of contradiction, purely in order to fit them both to our nightmares ? For sin is a nightmare. Is God to subject Himself to the evil wills of men ? He did so, by being crucified for our salvation. What more would you have Him do ? He has already poured out infinite mercy and forgiveness - how can He be “more infinite” in pity & mercy than He is ? God has died a hideous & obscene death, that man might share His Eternal Life. What more can He do ?

If our choices are to be ours, each of us must make them: God can love a man - but He cannot be that man; the man is free to reject God’s Love. And freedom has consequences: if we reject Mercy, only Wrath remains. It was Jesus Himself Who first warned of eternal torment - not Paul. It is a mercy that Hell is mentioned in the NT - “forewarned is fore-armed” - a cruel God would not warn us.

What gets missed so often is that damnation is richly deserved, and that no-one is damned without deserving it. What is often overlooked, is sin. If we saw just one of our sins as God Who is All-Holy sees & knows it, ISTM we would die of horror. Many have said this. Many holy people have said that there is nothing worse than sin. To be holy is to be on God’s “wavelength” - so they very likely know what they are talking about. We who are not as good at listening to God, might do well to listen to them.
You might counter that it’s a matter of human choice; but IMO that’s an ill informed view (that fails to consider the realities of human psychology). Leaving aside homosexuality for a moment, consider people who are clinically psychotic (and even though they might know right from wrong, cannot control their deviant desires). Pedophiles are incurable (and we know, short of castration, they will strike again if we leave them on the streets). Psychosis can run in families (so it obviously has a genetic component). Indeed we have little problem accepting the biological cause of everything ranging from mental illness to alcoholism, yet mention homosexuality and biology in the same sentence and the fire and brim stone comes heaping down. It seems like obvious hypocrisy to me.

Lack of thought, perhaps. People are (speaking generally) accountable for what they do - IOW, they are resonsible for their actions & their motives. For instance: if we do what we know or strongly suspect to be wrong, then we sin. Responsibility for our actions implies rejection of fatalism - and is entirely compatible with accepting that our actions are influenced by a great many factors, of many kinds: it is this acceptance that explains why there is such a science as moral theology - and why “one size” does not “fit all” when judgements abour responsibility, innocence, & guilt are made.

Sorry not to tackle all your points, but Hell etc., seemed rather important. :o

How about these abominations…

Lev19:19" 'Keep my decrees.
" 'Do not mate different kinds of animals.
" 'Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed.
" 'Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.

Where did Jesus excuse is from keeping these decrees?
i don’t know. but i do not cross breed animal nor do i farm as for the clothing i just don’t know. and will have to rely on Gods mercy , Given that it does not chang what we do know

I am in so much trouble right now!😉 I planted tomato plants with peppers in our garden. We also have a Puggle named Sallly. She is a cross between a Pug and a Beagle. We do love her. I have to end this post quickly before our daughter leaves the house for school in clothes that are not 100% cotton. YIKES!!

Have a blessed day!!

Well if you wish to avoid hypocracy, the leaven of the pharisees, you will stop wearing anything made of two fabrics. Also, when you call your congressman to vote against rights for gay couples you should also demand that laws be passed to end the abomination of crop rotation and alteration. These abominations occur on every farm in our country and have been going on for 200 years of American agriculture. Seeing how these abominations are so much more common than gay abominations perhaps you should rally around ending those evil practices first before setting your sights on the much less frequent abomination of gay couples. But I don’t believe you care one bit about crop rotation and alteration. Is your selective obedience to Leviticus is pharisaical hypocracy? You make the call.

oh no .,… I’m gonna burn in the eternal fire of hell :eek::eek::eek:

god didn’t choose me, oh well (I guess you can’t expect brains and heaven huh?):D:D
You have no idea in what state of unbelief or faith in Christ that you will end up. As I menitoned earlier, if you are an elect of God… you can try to run from God, but God will have His way with you. The Apostle Paul is a good example in what I wrote, because as Saul… he led to way to kill Christians.

Let’s discuss all 600 laws in the holiness code or the Levitical Law, together with the gospel. Why post only 1 of 600 of them? Be careful how you judge others, because you will be judged in the same manner that you judge others. Remember, God tends to chose the foolish, debase, despised things of this world to be His vessels of mercy. It sure seems Christian homosexuals fit into the despised category in the views of many.

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. - Jesus

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world (homosexuals, mentally ill, the untouchables, the poor, the uneducated, those would a low IQ, etc) , even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” - 1 Cor 1 (Paul)

Once again, you are confusing action and actor. It is not the sinner that is despised by the Catholic Church. It is the sin. The sinner is loved, and for that reason we cannot ignore the sin. And you have not responded to my earlier post. Why would it be “ok” to change the definition of marriage to mask what we believe is clearly sinful behavior. Can we - in the same way - change the definition of adultery so that we can also ignore the sexual sin that it entails? What about murder?

Again, one is not judging any person by saying that the institution of marriage is by definition limited to one man and one woman. Conduct is either objectively morally acceptable or it is not. How a person feels about it can mitigate or aggravate that person’s individual relationship with God. But that is not for us to judge. What we as people of God must do is try to conform our lives to what He has asked. Any sexual conduct outside of marriage is not in conformity with what we have been called to. I see no way around this logic; just wishful thinking and some creative reinterpretation by those seeking to justify conduct that is clearly - from an objective standpoint - outside of the boundaries of Christian conduct.

The Catholic Church’s position on marriage is not a boast. And in the “world” it is the Catholic position that is seen as foolish and antiquated, backwards and provincial. It is the “world” that sees gay marriage as acceptable - with all the “wise” thinkers of the day lining up in support. I think your perception of the world is somewhat backwards. Homosexuality is no longer persecuted in American society. It is celebrated in the media, paraded through the city streets and protected in the workplace. It is the christians who are seen as “uneducated” and who are despised by the world for their “lack of compassion” and “judgmental” qualities.

Peace,
Robert

Thanks for taking the time for sharing your beliefs on the difficult subject of same sex marriage. For years I held the same position as yourself. However, I have started a journey to reexamine the issue by searching the Scriptures in context of the Levitical Law, the gospel, and central themes in the Bible. The Church has a history of sinfully discrimating against certain groups, such as women, the divorced, slavery, Africians, and other forms of minorities. I personally don’t believe the issue is as clear cut that many of you make it. That is why you are seeing many different Christian churches divided over the issue of same sex marriage, and the place of Christian homosexuals in the church. In the wisdom of Augustine, I cannot say that the topic of same sex marriage is an essential doctrine of the Faith.

In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity. - Augustine

First I would have to go to a orthodox rabbi that is studied in such matters as to determine if planting corn one year and wheat the next is a violation of this. Or was it saying dont plant corn and wheat together?🤷 I do know that as I pass the farmers lands I do not see crops intermixed. so I am not sue that rotaion of crops is the same thing.

I think the dos is ok as both parents were dogs. now if it was a cross of and dog and cat we would have problems.

I just noticed your screen name. One church is never metioned in Ephesians 4 in regards to the ones. Actually, Paul and John wrote to the churches (plural).

Ephesians 4

Unity in the Body of Christ

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

While you at it you can look into whether or not you can sit in the same couch with a woman on her period. And I hope you don’t allow your wife to go to church while on her period because she is unclean and must not enter the sanctuary.12:1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. 3 On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.
Do you go to your preist when you have a rash. If not you’re not obeying God in Leviticus. Why cast stones at the homosexuals… 13:1The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 2 "When anyone has a swelling or a rash or a bright spot on his skin that may become an infectious skin disease, [a] he must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons ** who is a priest.**

Do you shower your whole body after ejaculation? If not, you’re a hypocrite…15:16 " 'When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body with water, and he will be unclean till evening. 17 Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water, and it will be unclean till evening. 18 When a man lies with a woman and there is an emission of semen, both must bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.

Every haircut you get is an abomination…19:27 " 'Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard

Do you demand the death penalty for cursing one’s parents. If not you’re a hypocrite.20:9" 'If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.

Do you do anty work on Saturday. If so, you are disobeying Leviticus… 23:3 " 'There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the LORD.

It is really hypocritical of you to demand obedience to Levitucus’ command against homosexuals and to completely disregard all these other levitical laws that no one, even you, pays attention to at all.

For the record I am not setting in judgement of the eternal salvation of homosexuals. I pray gods mercy for all, for all( i included ) have sinned and followen short of the Glory of God. I am saying according to the word of God, both Old and New Testament sex between people of the same sex is a sin. Therefore the Church can not and we as Christians should not endorse a so called gay marriage. We Can and should so love and compation to our brothers that find themselves homosexual, but we can not endorse the sin.

As for the question on crops and animals and clothes I would have to say that there must be a reason that I do not know We see in the ten commandments that God says to make no graven image then has them build the ark of the covenant with angles on it. oh and lets not forget the staff with the snake . So we see that god did make exceptions for that rule. Some where I am sure it is more clearly stated about crops and animals and clothes I am sure that with all the fundamentalist out there if there was not a more detailed out line we would have herd about it. What we do know is for the last 4000 or so years with in the Judo/Christian world no exceptions have been made for the homosexual. Now all of a sudden in the last 30 years we know so much more about it.🤷

Instead of helping and contributing to sin we should be praying for deliverance from it. is suppose that means in crops and animals and clothes as well.

Oh and by the way I have not called my congressman or senators about the gay marriage issue todate, but if it comes to a point were they need to know how I feel about it will. I see that it is agian not possible to stay on topic as if you take a stance on an issue those that oppose you defelct the topic to another issue.

You can make an argument for compation for the homosexual from th bible , but you can not make a arguement for gay marriage from it.

My Bible says churches… There is one body (Ephesians 4) in Scripture but multiple churches (Scripture).

Greeting to the Seven Churches - Rev 1:4

John to the seven churches that are in Asia:

1 Corinthians 16:19
The churches of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord.

Even the Catholic Church acknowledge the Protestant churches and the Orthodox churches.

Your welcome. You’re the one who quoted Leviticus in big bold letters to assert that homosexuality was against God’s will. I simply exposed the hypocracy of your assertion by citing many other commands that you yourself disregard. So in the interest of avoiding hypocracy, I hope you will strive to keep all of the laws of Leviticus or else stop citing Leviticus as proof that God labels homosexuality as sinful. If you believe that Jesus excuses you from obeying “most if not all” of the laws of Leviticus perhaps you can begin with showing us where Jesus approves of your haircut :coffeeread:

I think you miss the point in regards to the Levitical Law within the context of whom the Levitical Law was given to specifically, for what purpose and historical circumstances in redemptive history.
No I got the point. there is no longer any sin. That is the point that is tring to be made. So we are all free to do as we want.
