Sexual sin of this nature is not simply a matter of ritual impurity. It is a violation of the natural law. I don’t think it falls into the same category as the lengthy of one’s philactories or whether we eat pork or drink blood. Rather, the fundamental nature of the act is disordered at a natural level… the acts are closed to the possibility of life and they are contrary to the complementarity of male and female. That’s not to say that persons’ feelings towards someone of the same gender are easily dismissed. Rather, from an objective point of view, the urges are disordered from the standpoint of natural law. Thanks for taking the time for sharing your beliefs on the difficult subject of same sex marriage. For years I held the same position as yourself. However, I have started a journey to reexamine the issue by searching the Scriptures in context of the Levitical Law, the gospel, and central themes in the Bible.
2nd Adam:
Again, you are confusing the act with the actor. The Church is very clear that people who suffer from same sex attraction should not be the target of persecution or discrimination, and must be respected:The Church has a history of sinfully discrimating against certain groups, such as women, the divorced, slavery, Africians, and other forms of minorities.
2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition. (CCC 2358)
2nd Adam:I think that the issue is logically quite clear. However, the issue is one that is filled from all sides with emotions like pride, anger, lust and fear. I think the primary reason why we see som many different churches conceding the argument to the pro-gay marriage point of view is fear - of reprisal, of public hatred and ridicule, and of being labelled with the term bigot or fear-monger. On the contrary, I think the healthiest thing to do is sit down and have a very healthy and frank conversation about the issue - in which people speak the truth in charity and respect. It is not a proper answer to compromise the truth for the sake of a “unity” that is grounded in falsity.I personally don’t believe the issue is as clear cut that many of you make it. That is why you are seeing many different Christian churches divided over the issue of same sex marriage, and the place of Christian homosexuals in the church.
2nd Adam:
I think that sexual sin of this nature is a serious sin that jeopardizes the souls of millions of people who are now being told - falsely - by people in authority - that their actions are not sinful. Because it is sin of such a grave nature, I think it cannot simply be dismissed as a “non-essential” of the faith. It is an issue that - at its heart confronts a time-honored moral teaching of the Church that comes to us without change from the time of the Apostles. In the wisdom of Augustine, I cannot say that the topic of same sex marriage is an essential doctrine of the Faith.
I believe you are sincere in your desire to be inclusive of all persons and to turn none away. However, I think you need to disengage the act from the actor. It’s one thing to say to the alcoholic - you are welcome in this Church. It’s another thing alltogether for the Church to say to the alcoholic - “C’mon in … drinks are on the house.” The former is Christian - and oriented towards love of the person, the latter is cruel and ignores the person’s weakness - ultimately leading the person further from Christ.
Peace,
Robert
P.S. - the above analogy does not mean to imply any defect of character or personality in persons with same-sex attraction. I was merely trying to illustrate the devastating impact of ignoring (and implicitly condoning) sinful urges.
