Dear Joandarc,Rara Avis,
If you could read my above post and respond as to whether or not the Mass is both a sacrifice and a celebration, that would be so great. I’m sure that it can be, and is, both. . .the existence of one attribute not diminishing the awe or gravity of the other. What are your thoughts?
Unfortunately the word “celebrate” can probably go in the bin with all the other abuses of Vatican II - This is the dictionary definition of “celebrate”
- To observe, as a festival, with rejoicing. 2. To make known or famous; extol. 3. To perform (a ceremony) publicly and as ordained. 4. To observe or commemorate a day or event. 5. To perform a religious ceremony.
But THAT IS NOT what we are (suppose) to be meditating on at Mass. The Mass is the re enactment of Calvary - in an unbloody manner. You can go step by step through the Mass like you are reliving Calvary. (of course with the N.O. mass this is a little more difficult because they have removed so many parts)
but here is an example
Priest goes to the Altar
Christ goes to the Garden of Olives
Priest begins Mass
Christ begins to pray
Priest says the Confiteor
Christ prostrates in Angony and sweating blood
Priest kisses the Altar
Christ betrayed by Judas with a kiss
It is through Our Lord’s Passion that we become Holy - And we are all called to the imitation of Christ - People only wanted to imitate the “good” Jesus - they forget about the “suffering” Jesus. The resurrection is the reward … it will not make us Holy!
Thou prayest, Thou dost suffer, O my sweet Savior, Thy heart experiencing a mortal sadness; suffer me to unite myself to Thy sorrows, and give me a share in Thy deep affliction. Everything that presented itself to Thy mind plunged Thy heart in a sea of bitterness; for Thou dist behold the deplorable state of the world, the crimes and excesses of mankind, the torrent of iniquities which deluged the earth, the multitued of souls which would perish and be cast into hell, the glory of Thy heavenly Father, outraged, the approach of Thy passion and sufferings, and their uselessness with regard to so many sinners. who, notwithstanding the shedding of Thy blood for them, would be lost forever.
