Rara Avis,

If you could read my above post and respond as to whether or not the Mass is both a sacrifice and a celebration, that would be so great. I’m sure that it can be, and is, both. . .the existence of one attribute not diminishing the awe or gravity of the other. What are your thoughts?
Dear Joandarc,

Unfortunately the word “celebrate” can probably go in the bin with all the other abuses of Vatican II - This is the dictionary definition of “celebrate”
  1. To observe, as a festival, with rejoicing. 2. To make known or famous; extol. 3. To perform (a ceremony) publicly and as ordained. 4. To observe or commemorate a day or event. 5. To perform a religious ceremony.
Of course we are happy because of Jesus’ Death and Passion the gates of Heaven have been opened for us.

But THAT IS NOT what we are (suppose) to be meditating on at Mass. The Mass is the re enactment of Calvary - in an unbloody manner. You can go step by step through the Mass like you are reliving Calvary. (of course with the N.O. mass this is a little more difficult because they have removed so many parts)

but here is an example

Priest goes to the Altar
Christ goes to the Garden of Olives

Priest begins Mass
Christ begins to pray

Priest says the Confiteor
Christ prostrates in Angony and sweating blood

Priest kisses the Altar
Christ betrayed by Judas with a kiss

It is through Our Lord’s Passion that we become Holy - And we are all called to the imitation of Christ - People only wanted to imitate the “good” Jesus - they forget about the “suffering” Jesus. The resurrection is the reward … it will not make us Holy!

Thou prayest, Thou dost suffer, O my sweet Savior, Thy heart experiencing a mortal sadness; suffer me to unite myself to Thy sorrows, and give me a share in Thy deep affliction. Everything that presented itself to Thy mind plunged Thy heart in a sea of bitterness; for Thou dist behold the deplorable state of the world, the crimes and excesses of mankind, the torrent of iniquities which deluged the earth, the multitued of souls which would perish and be cast into hell, the glory of Thy heavenly Father, outraged, the approach of Thy passion and sufferings, and their uselessness with regard to so many sinners. who, notwithstanding the shedding of Thy blood for them, would be lost forever.

I agree: here is a gathering after a so called LIFETEEN MASS in a church:http://www.traditio.com/comment/com0306e.jpg
While this isn’t model behavior for a church setting, notice that the tabernacle light is not lit. So Christ is not immediatly present on the altar or in the sanctuary. Perhaps they had the washing of the feet as the gospel reading?

Isn’t that what we are doing? I’m confused. While I agree the Mass should more reverent and there are abuses, why do you have a problem with the word? It seems to me that the description you gave fits both definition 4 and 5.

Perhaps the problem is that people assume it’s definition 1…

Peace,

Robert.

in annother thread I stated that the USA is a threat to catholicism, and this thread does a better job of it than I could ever hope for. in the good old days Catholics went to mass to worship God, and getting anything out of mass was not expected, if it happened it was a bonus, but your pourpose in going to Mass was to worship God and absolutely no ther reason what so ever… now in modern times we have people like teresas1979 who are looking to be entertained. with tv at home radio in the car, computer with internet in your den, and on and on… I think American are entertained enough if not too much. teresas with an attitude like yours , by defacto you will be raising children who will expect to be entertained all the time, including church. yes jesus loved children, but the scripture he quoted from all the time also says" spare the rod, spoil the child". doesnt anyone want to raise upright children any more? did we forget being we are to parent our children , not to be their buddies!? just wondering teresas, which is more important to you, your children being happy now, or making it to heaven? in some cases you cant have it both ways.

That is indeed exactly the problem Robert. Thank you for pointing it out - clearly!

I agree 100%, but it is a global problem.😦 (Teresas1979 lives in Sheffield, England)

I confess that as a convert, I used to have a similar outlook. I wondered why Catholic Churches didn’t have the same “energy” that many Protestant churches have. I didn’t understand (poor catechesis in my RCIA program) that the Mass wasn’t there just to make me feel good…what did someone call it? A happy clappy christian?

God Bless,

Robert.
