Now here is the good news of the gospel ,the King is coming ,and He came ,and He enters our sinful, dirty hearts , AND He does the cleaning also. (without choking us with our own dirty dust) Amazing ,isn’t it ?
This is very Catholic of you to say!

And we, gifted with the Eucharist, can have the most intimate of unions with this King! How magnificent is that?
Please ,no more false piety.
Please elaborate, david. Who are you accusing of having false piety? And how was this demonstrated as being false to you?

If you see things from a catholic perspective, and consider the position of the apostles and think about what Jesus said to Peter, than perhaps.

If you think that only God/Jesus can forgive sins, then obviously not.

The choice is yours to decide. It really depends on what you feel or not. If you don’t think priests have the power to forgive sins, don’t bother repenting to a priest. Its about what you feel is right. There is nothing wrong with just repenting to Jesus if you don’t want to to a priest.
This reminds me of the saying if it feels good do it! or perhaps Whatever works for you.

Now back to what you said, that if you think that only God can forgive sins then obviously not??? Tell me if only God can forgive sins why did Peter forgive sins in the bible? Was he not obeying Gods word in your opinion? Did Jesus lie when he said what my Father has given to me, I now give to you?

Who ever in the Catholic Church ever said that a Priest forgives sins on his own? In the Catholic faith the Priest does indeed forgive sins, by the power given to them by Jesus from Holy Orders.

Why do you find it so hard to believe that Jesus gave this power to his Apostles? And why do you find it so hard to believe that the power is passed down, the way Jesus said it was to be passed down?

For her to be conceived without sin, wouldn’t her mother, and her mother, etc.,etc.,etc, have to have been born without sin? I mean she was born of the seed of a man!
Hi lb hope you had a wonderful holiday. And actually she would have be conceived into sin like the rest of us, but something wonderful happened. At the second of her conception God saved her.

Does that not sound like something God would do, Make the Mother of his only Son completely free from sin?😉

Now I asked this question before and it did not go over well, but think about what I am saying. If the Blessed Mother was touched by sin, then she could not be sinless and that sin would be passed onto Jesus right? Think what I am saying.

Now people have said but Jesus is God, and I said yes, and God can do anything. Especially make sure no sin touches his Mother also. Think about it!!

Not only Could God save the Blessed Mother from any kind of sin, would he, and did he. The answer is Yes!! That is a teaching that has been passed down from the beginning of the birth of Christ.

First you say there is no more Public revelation , then you say the apostles deposited everything .
Yes. The Church believes that the fullness of God’s revelation to man exists in Christ. He gave to His Apostles all that we need to know. They, in turn, deposited all this “once for all to the saints”. The Church is the custodian of the fullness of God’s revelation to mankind.

**
Now you say you can continue to add as long as you do it ,of course basing it on something that already has been deposited ? My head is spinning ,Why can not I say Scriptural revelation has stopped ? And so has apostolic depositing stopped.**

Perhaps I did not express myself well? What is “added” is only our understanding of the once for all deposit of faith. Elements of the faith such as the canon of scripture, the term “Trinity” the nature of the hypostatic union, etc. These are developments of the One Faith that was passed down to us from the Apsotles. They are not “additions” to the doctrine, but reflect the development of our understanding of it.

david_ruiz:
Hey, if the Pope can do the Immacculate Conception ,Luther can do sola scriptura.
The problem is that the IC was part of the original deposit, and SS was not.
Tradition (oral pronouncements) has always been a moving target ,with it’s errors ,and slanderings and perversions by others-( " Hath Paul really said…? ") even in the apostles day. ,Why would they rely on such a weak, changing strand ?
Basically what you are saying is that Jesus is to weak or disinterested to keep His promises to the Church.

They relied upon Sacred Tradition because they recognized that it is the Word of God, and they believed (as we do today) that God is able to preserve His Word to the purpose for which He has sent it.

Same way the Jews preserved the revelation of God from the creation of Adam to the creation of the Torah. How did you think Moses got all those stories for the first part of Genesis? Do you realize how many thousands of years passed before it was written?
Is it not interesting that only when scripture was complete and uniform amongst the universal church ,did the world / God allow a church heirarchy to develop or fully excercise itself
This is just a fantasy on your part. The heirarchy was developed and exercisingn for centuries prior to the canon.
Code:
(persecutions ceased-bishops no longer being sought out and killed))
The de-crimminalizaiton of Christianity in the Roman Empire preceeded the formation of the canon by an entire generation. I think you need a little more history under your belt here.
And now why wouldn’t scripture ,really the apostles, continue to guide this new developement. The first councils and creeds were nothing but scriptural dogma.
This is also a fantasy on your part, which is clear when you read the pre-nicean fathers. The faith was preserved through sacred tradition.
That is .not all Catholic doctrine came from the apostles. That has been the debate for centuries ,actually since 33 A.D.
Really? can you give an example of this?
Are you saying the Popes revelation of the infallible Immaculate Conception is not binding on the faithful ?
Any private revelation recieved by a saint, pope, or Dr . of the Church or any other private individual is not binding on the faithful. Only the doctrines we have received through public revelation, which closed at the death of the last Apostle, are binding on the faithful.

.Could not ,and did He not rule over His early church ,invisibly(no central authority) ,yet the world took note of these Christians ,the Way ?
Sure - He could have set things up however He wanted. He chose to have a visible leadership, with authority, an hierarchy, discipline. The unity is visible in those He appointed.
The Church was quite visible and united .
Yes, and this revolved around the structure that Christ established.Irenaeus describes a visible Church, centered around the successors fo the Apostles, which preserves the doctrine of the faith through Sacred Tradition.

The truth is to be found nowhere else but in the Catholic Church, the sole depository of apostolical doctrine. Heresies are of recent formation, and cannot trace their origin up to the apostles. +]
  1. Since therefore we have such proofs, it is not necessary to seek the truth among others which it is easy to obtain from the Church; since the apostles, like a rich man [depositing his money] in a bank, lodged in her hands most copiously all things pertaining to the truth: so that every man, whosoever will, can draw from her the water of life. For she is the entrance to life; all others are thieves and robbers. On this account are we bound to avoid them, but to make choice of the thing pertaining to the Church with the utmost diligence, and to lay hold of the tradition of the truth. For how stands the case? Suppose there arise a dispute relative to some important question among us, should we not have recourse to the most ancient Churches with which the apostles held constant intercourse, and learn from them what is certain and clear in regard to the present question? For how should it be if the apostles themselves had not left us writings? Would it not be necessary, [in that case,] to follow the course of the tradition which they handed down to those to whom they did commit the Churches?
You see that they were not appealing to the Scriptures alone for the defense of the faith, but always to the Teachings of the Apostles preserved infallibly through the Sacred Tradition.

Then came the full excercise of Catholic Petrine doctrine,
Not sure what that means “Petrine doctrine”?

Perhaps you are refererring to the Petrine gifts? To Peter were given gifts specific to the ministry to which he was called. He was responsible for the care and feeding of the flock. I do agree that the role of the successor of Peter grew along with the Church.
resembling much of the worldly Rome ,that was collapsing.
You will have to explain this, since I am not following you here.
Unity remained , though not by invisible forces, but quite vocal and visible ,and with increasing spiritual and temporal power, and some say by a second rate idea or way ,that yes , was still blessed of God ,For a time(as with Israel )… Sorry ,you asked if there was another way .
Unity resides only in Truth. To the extent that individuals do not adhere to the Truth, unity does not exist, or it is wounded. Second rate ideas and temporal powers are unable to achieve and maintain unity, especially the supernatural unity that only exists through the power of God.

Besides, your timeline is way off. The Pope did not become a temporal ruler until the sixth century, and all these things you accuse would have to have occurred centuries prior that for your theory to hold.

Face it, the same Church that canonized your Bible is the one that believes in Apostolic Succession, Real Presence of the Eucharist, and the authority of the priests to forgive or retain sins. If they are wrong on everything else, what confidence can you have that they were right with the Scripture? The contents of the NT was formed by what is consistent with Sacred Tradition. There were over 400 books floating about claiming to be inspired (which is why the canon had to be closed). When you read the history of the disputed books of the bible, it is clear that God acted supernaturally through the Magesterium to formulate the canon. What evidence do you have that He was not acting supernaturally in all these doctrines you deny?

Thank-you, but you are not being honest to the argument Some have held me to a high standard of technicality ,holding me to every word ,jot and tittle ,which is O.K.( after all, I am your guest ,critiquing strongly your views).
Are you saying his kinsman believed always from the beginning ? Of course not , for you are also aware of the scriptures that tell us so directly- “they did not believe at this time”. Thread #598 I stated this with the phrase “At this stage” they rejected Him ,that is when Jesus said he was without honor in his household. …It still stands ,the need to answer His house rejecting Him,temporarily(apart form countrymen ,kinsmen -relatives)
JL First, there is no progression, Mary had no other children. Second, you have absolutely NO EVIDENCE Mary had other sons or daughters, you have simply set up a strawman. Third, It is you who must answer, your HOUSE question, showing others in Christ’s house, who were more than countrymen, kinsmen or relatives. I know of only two Mary and Joseph, neither REJECTED Christ, even if both had rejected Christ it still does not prove Mary had other sons or daughters… Fourth I knew that some of his brothers, kinsman, didn’t believe at first. I would have thought you would have understood that as elementary. The point is, Christ’s brothers, KIN, didn’t reject Christ and REMAIN in disbelief as Israel did. Even had Christ’s kin, to the last person, rejected him and died rejecting him, it does not prove Mary had other children. Some, if not ever last one of them, did become believers, they were in the upper room at Pentecost. Fifth, [GAL 1:18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter and abode with him fifteen days 19 **But OTHER of the APOSTLES saw I none SAVE JAMES THE LORDS BROTHER ] The Apostle James, the Greater, ZEBEDEE’S SON is called the brother of the Lord. The Apostle James was Bishop of Jerusalem. He was not a literal brother of the Lord, as our Lord hand NO literal brothers. James was a kinsman and one of the original twelve apostles. This not only lays to rest your progression theory, but also the tradition of men that ALL the Lord’s so called literal brothers were unbelievers, hence Christ gave the care of Mary to John.

Mary had no other natural children. Ezek 44:1 Then the man brought me back to THE OUTER GATE OF THE SANCTUARY, the one FACING EAST, and it was shut. 2 THE LORD SAID to me, THIS GATE IS TO REMAIN SHUT. IT MUST NOT BE OPENED; NO ONE MAY ENTER THROUGH IT. It is to remain shut BECAUSE THE LORD, THE GOD OF ISRAEL, HAS ENTERED THROUGH IT. The Lord God has entered through Mary the gate of heaven and no one else is to enter thru that gate. Just as no one was to enter into the OT Ark of the Covenant, so no one is to enter Mary the Ark of the NT. The Fathers called Mary the gate of heaven and the ark of the covenant.

I prefer “revelation” to “authority” .Nevertheless, how do you explain how millions around the world believe the same things,( even with 50,000 denominations ? ), without a central magisterium etc.?..get back to you on rest -good stuff, thanks
JL: I would say your are delutional, if they ALL believed the same thing why aren’t they one? Answer they believe 50,000 different things I was Protestant and KNOW better. By the way how do you know when you are getting a REVELATION from God.

PRmerger;7421069:
Correct .That is why i stated "carefully “: beyond a shadow of a doubt , infallibly so (debating is over ).As you say, " to alleviate any doubt.” However ,it differs from your scenario a bit because it was never stated , never stated as “dogma” before 1850 .I liken the scenario to abolition of slavery ,or legalization of abortion ,whereby early on people pushed for it ,believed in it ,tried to gather support ,made a push for it ,again and again ,until finally ,whamo ,proclamation of 1863 and 1974 making it "dogma’ ,law of the land.To the joy of many ,and still the chagrin of some. I recall bitter debate over some of this , to the death ,amongst several Holy Orders. That it took so long is testimony of it’s controversy and slim attachment ,if any, to the apostles.I do agree that from early on the seed was there ,that some believed it to be so .I also believe the church heirarchy did not want to commit to it,until 1850.You may say the glass is half full .I will say the glass is half empty on this one. .
JL: Your senario is sort of like discerning the canon and the trinity, that took at lest three hundred years.

You post, * Really what is your source for this? Can you give me names of these Orders and how many were killed? My bet is NO.*

QUOTE=guanophore;7415107] " Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God", Romans 10. One would think the written Word qualifies for the Word of God ,as well as oral .
JL: Yes faith cometh by hearing, [Rm 10:14 …how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 HOW SHALL THEY PREACH **EXCEPT THEY BE SENT?] How are they SENT? By the ONE VISIBLE FELLOWSHIP Christ SENT to teach the whole world till the end. Thru the sacrament of Holy Order or ordination. Sucessors by laying on of hands from apostles to bishops to bishops till the end.

Mt28:16 Then THE ELEVEN disciples WENT away into Galilee, INTO A MOUNTAIN where JESUS had APPOINTED them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. 18 And JESUS came and SPAKE UNTO THEM, saying, ALL POWER IS GIVEN UNTO ME IN HEAVEN AND IN EARTH. 19 GO ye therefore, and TEACH ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING ** them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 TEACHING THEM TO OBSERVE ALL THINGS whatsoever I HAVE COMMANDED YOU: and, lo, ** I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, even UNTO THE END OF THE WORLD. Amen.

[2 TIM 1:6 …stir up the GIFT OF GOD IN YOU BY THE PUTTING ON OF MY HANDS 7 GOD HAS GIVEN US the SPIRIT OF POWER. Titus 1:5 For this I left you in Crete that you should set in order …and ORDAIN ELDERS in EVERY CITY AS I APPOINTED YOU. Acts 14:23 when they had ORDAINED elders IN EVERY CHURCH and prayed with fasting they commended them to the Lord on whom they believed. Acts 20:28 Take heed of yourself, and the flock over which the HOLY SPIRIT has MADE you OVERSEERS TO FEED THE CHURCH OF GOD purchased with his own blood, 1 TIM 5:17 Let the elders that RULE well be counted worthy of DOUBLE HONOUR especially they who labour in the WORD AND DOCTRINE. 1 Tin 4:13 Till I come attend to READING to EXHORTATION to DOCTRINE 14 Do not neglect THE GIFT in you GIVEN you by prophecy WITH THE LAYING ON OF the HANDS of the presbytery 16 TAKE HEED to yourself TO THE DOCTRINE continue in them for in doing this you shalt both SAVE yourself and THOSE WHO HEAR YOU.]

What did people do the first time the gospel was preached ? Acts2:41 Then THEY THAT gladly RECEIVED HIS WORD were BAPTIZED: and the same day there WERE ADDED UNTO THEM about three thousand souls. 42 And THEY CONTINUED steadfastly IN the APOSTLES’ DOCTRINE and FELLOWSHIP, and in BREAKING OF BREAD (mass), and in PRAYERS. [Those that received his word were baptized. They were ADDED to the Church by baptism and CONTINUED steadfastly in the APOSTLES DOCTRINE, that they may ALL be One VISIBLE Holy Catholic Apostolic Fellowship, as Christ prayed in the garden. [Jn17:21 THAT THEY ALL MAY BE ONE; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: **THAT THE WORLD MAY BELIEVE that thou hast sent me.] ]

[1Cor 1:9 God is faithful you were called into THE FELLOWSHIP OF his Son JESUS CHRIST 10 I appeal to you BREATHREN by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that all of you AGREE that there be no dissensions among you that you BE UNITED in the same mind and THE SAME JUDGMENT. 1Jn 4:6 We are of God Whoever knows God LISTENS TO US and he who is not of God DOES NOT LISTEN TO US BY THIS WE KNOW the spirit of TRUTH and the spirit of ERROR] Belonging to that ONE FELLOWSHIP is how we know with assurance TRUTH from ERROR]

Even though Paul had the gift of revelation he still checked his teaching with that ONE SENT VISIBLE FELLOWSHIP, to be sure he was not teaching another doctrine or gospel. [Gal2:1 Then fourteen years after **I WENT UP AGAIN TO JERUSALEM with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. 2 And I went up BY REVELATION, and COMMUNICATED UNTO THEM that GOSPEL which I PREACH among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, LEST BY ANY MEANS I SHOULD run, or HAD RUN, IN VAIN.]

Ps127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.

That you (anyone) is more of a sinner than what God says ,so much so ,that for Him to come inside (as he did Mary),to cohabitate, can not happen unless one is special (immaculate). That He is Holy -true .That we are sinners -true .By grace ,not perfection ,He came into Mary -true.

Simple fact: The God of the universe , the creator of heaven and earth , entered a fallen earth. It was in the state of sin (missing the mark-not perfect anymore -Paul says even the earth is waiting for that great day to be restored ). So, God entered a sinful world , and was totally surrounded by a fallen world. It is immaterial that He had to be carried in “perfection”, for as soon as He was born , He entered a sinful world , surrounded by “fallen” elements. He became “dust” , and who knows where that dust had been before . He was still perfect , for dust does not defile , nor could a real, fallen Mary , for defilement comes from within. ( Remember the Pharisees fixation and attempts to be separated from"dust" ) ?

why do you find it so hard to believe that the power is passed down, the way Jesus said it was to be passed down?
Same old debate, going back to 2nd ,3rd century, perhaps earlier .Tertullian said Peter was the rock does not mean there then must always be a supreme bishop. This is not a protestant /Catholic debate ,at least not in it’s origins.

It is your history .No one has ever challenged this point before .Was it the Dominicans and the Augustinians that fought over Marion doctrine-not really sure which two . Jerome said, "no one knows of Mary 's end .Assumption talk is “poppey cock”, if I may paraphrase his attitude.

Why would it* have to* be this way?

It was fitting that she be born without sin, but not required. God could have become incarnate in a peapod. 🤷

But, it was fitting that He come to be held in a vessel worthy of His Divinity.

Just like if the King of Siam were to come to my home it would be fitting that I clean my house. But I don’t “have to.”
You summed it up; she didn’t have to be born sinless, but it fits your scenario! God told Adam and Eve that hrist would be born of the seed of a woman! Being born of he seed of a man leads to being born into sin. Romans 5:12 says," Sin entered the world through one man," so that everyone who came after had the curse of sin!👍

This is a man-made tradition you are espousing, david. For there are no Scriptures that state that “by grace, not perfection, he came into Mary.”

You summed it up; she didn’t have to be born sinless, but it fits your scenario!
Then the non-believer will also tell you: Jesus didn’t have to come to earth through a virgin. He could have come as a grown man. He could have come as an alien. But it fits your scenario to say that he came through a virgin.

How would you respond to that, 1beleevr?

Romans 5:12 says," Sin entered the world through one man," so that everyone who came after had the curse of sin!👍
Yipes! This would include Jesus, then, if you’re proclaiming that “everyone” means, literally, every single person.

That is right .I just made it up now ,the not perfection part . Nowhere in scripture does it say ,“by grace ,not perfection…”. Do we concur that what is "God said ",bona fide scripture is , “By grace…Mary…” There are also no scriptures that say Mary was perfect either .This is man-made.

But, david, it is YOUR paradigm that all things regarding God must be found in Scripture. And you are contradicting your own paradigm.

As you know, Catholicism professes that God’s Word is revealed through 2 channels: Scripture and Tradition.

Thus, we don’t have to abide by your “it has to be found in the Bible for me to believe it” tradition.

You, however, are contradicting yours.
