Do Catholic priests have the authority to forgive sins on earth?

. What is the problem with millions having the same "revelation " from God that Jesus is the Messiah ,their Savior etc.
Not a thing! There is much of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic faith that has seeped through the filters. In this we rejoice, because even through the distortions, God’s Truth prevails.
. This is not public revelation. It is revelation form God to the individual believer. This revelation must be triggered or tied to nature, or scripture, or what a church or a preacher (some part of the Body) may be uttereing etc…
It comes from the once for all deposit of faith that was committed to the Church. The Scriptures are part of that revelation. Yes, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word.
. .I would prefer to say there has been no inspired scriptural revelation after the apostles.
Well, sure! That way, every generation can come along and add their own non-scriptural “revelations”, like Sola Scriptura.
. What does your church state ,do not understand "public’ revelation ? See ,I have trouble with this because many of yours and our traditions started or evolved after the apostles, upon further revelation, and insight and need.
The fullness of God’s revelation of Himself to us was in Christ. He revealed all to His Apostles, and they made this once for all deposit of faith to the Church. It exists in two equal strands of Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture.

Doctrine can develop, or from my point of view, our understanding of it, but no doctrine can be added after the Apostles. For example, when the word “Trinity” was adopted, it did “evolve”, but the doctrine upon which it was based came from the apostles. Same with all the doctrines of the Catholic faith.

The canon of the NT is also such a development.
. For instance, I thought the pope had “revelation” that indeed there was an Immaculate Conception, beyond a shadow of a doubt , that is, infallibly so in, 1850…
Yes, many saints have had such private revelations throughout the history of the Church, but these are not binding on the faithful.
dogma on priests being confessors should be judged upon our foundation as to it’s validity . If such dogma is not built on that foundation , it is fair and scriptural to say it is of private interpretation.
Yes, it would be, if it were not for the fact that this is part of the deposit of faith we received from teh Apostles.

This would need further explaining .How do we agree ? I say God must draw us to His son , and revive our spirits , basically shows us everything (divine revelation) .We must see Him and walk and talk with Him above all else .To this end He gave us His Body , and His Written Word - both pillars of truth. Still, Billy Graham (and his churches) ,or Mother Theresa ,or Pope Benedict (his Church) , even Jesus himself could preach to a lost soul a thousand years, to no avail , till he be quickened by the Father, and or the Holy Spirit. The Pope may fail .Billy graham may fail .The Holy Spirit never does , and once He quickens , nothing can prevail against work , in the believer. This is divine revelation. What is your view ?
My view is that your divine revelation has been contaminated by Calvanism. That, however, is beyond the scope of this thread.
Perhaps .Maybe it was not put forth ,in early writings, because it was understood. Hence you call it new
No, I call it new because it never existed until recently. It cannot be found anywhere in the history of the Chruch. It is a creation of American Evangelicanism.
.However ,I believe it is not as new as you say .For sure ,scripture by itself says something about the gospel , and the remission of sins
Yes, of course. People who receive and embrace the gospel have their sins forgiven. The need to confess sins occurs AFTER one is saved.
,totally apart from trying to negate priests role .
Not really entirely. How will they hear without a preacher?
Code:
Another words , would you deny this new revelation if it did not infringe on the priests role ? As one would say and have said :yes the gospel is for the remission of sins , getting you born again , and the priest for forgiveness after this .So ,that gospel is at least remission of sins, and is nothing new ,not even to Catholicism
Right. The gospel being efficacious in the remission of sins is not an innovation. The innovation lies in the claim that the power to retain and remit sins is related to preaching the gospel.
.But I see your point , that you say that the gospel /remission of sin was always there ,but what is "new 'is it’s use to negate further confessing.
No, I said nothing of the kind.
I went in a circle ,but still disagree that the first church held your view.
You must cling to this belief. If you did not, you would have to become Catholic! 😃
Show me that in scripture .This is at the crux of the matter ,of our differences .I find your statement cold to His effectual Word, and the Universal working of the Holy Spirit. The Word “seeps” to it’s second class citizens ,or as the lady said to Jesus ,"the dogs " getting the crumbs?
You testified to this fact at the opening of your post. Isa 11:55
You are the mother ship and we are on dingy’s ?
Why is that a problem? You seem to be comfortable and happy with your craft, are you not?
The Catholic Church is the ONLY pillar, and is author/father of ALL genuine spiritual experience on earth ?(all these things have been put forth by Catholics)
The Catholic Church does not teach that genuine spiritual expereinces are only found within her visible boundaries. If some Catholics have suggested otherwise, they are poorly catechized. The Catechism is quite clearly teaching the opposite, in fact.
It is like me saying that the Catholic Church has some truth ,because after all , they partly hold the Word as authoratative (I am not saying that , just trying to reverse YOUR statement )
Don’t worry, it has been said to me many times, even before I came here to CAF, but many times since.
As I may deny that all Catholicism is apostoilc , I feel you deny the role of the Holy Spirit and divine revelation to build and nuture His Body (apart from Catholicism)
Well, of course I deny it! Those Holy Scriptures tell me that there is only One Baptism, One Faith, One Church. Therefore, all who receive the work of the HS and are built adn nurtured by His HS are recieiving the fruit from the One Church. 😃
That is O.K. to say your Church is supreme. I would say mine is also ,and to the extent you hold to Apostolic teaching you are Universal/Catholic (Like all Christendom)… We have opposing views of what the Church and His Body are.
Yes, I was just discussing this point on another thread. When the Reformers redefined what “Church” means, splintering of the Body exponentiated. I think the solution is to go back to the defnition of “church” given to us by the Apostles. Even many Catholics don’t know the four marks of the True Church, which is why so many of them leave in search of something else.

But that did not answer the question of how so many come to saving truth outside it’s magisterium .
Such a thing rarely happens. Certainly, God can save whoever He wants however He likes, but He has chosen to do so through the Gospel of His Son.
How is it that they read his Word and get saved ?
The Scripture is a product of the Magesterium, David. The NT was written, preserved, promulgated and canonized by Catholics. There is nothing in it that is not Catholic.
How is it that some preacher’s words on the street corner or on late nite tv “quicken” him.
I dunno…he gets excited hearing himself preach? 😃

I think we are in agreement that God is constantly drawing to Himself those He intends to save.
You could say they read from a “Catholic” bible, but that came from 1800 years ago,and the specific one they read might be Catholic or it might be Guideon .
Do you think the Catholic intention of the Apostles has not seeped through into the Gideon?
How does His word Quicken , with no specific attachments to a denomination or Catholicism ?
God’s Word is not confined to the walls of the Church. He searches wide over the face of the earth to gather His lost sheep.
We are talking about the biggest miracle of all , one that the gates of hell can not prevail against ,consequences that will carry a soul and spirit on into eternity, forever and forever with the Lord.
Or so you have been taught to believe…
Could it be that the God of the universe acts outside the realm of Roman Catholicism or the Southern Baptists, as well partially, and sometimes totally with them ? Is His Church bigger than Catholicism and Orthodoxy and Protestantism ?
Of course, I can easily stipulate this. Only God really knows those who are His. This is what the Catholic Church teaches.
If he has chosen Catholicism, then why does he Bless those that are opposed to you, and give them magisteriums and authority also ?
God blesses His word to go forth for the salvation of souls.

Phil 1:15-18

15 Some proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. 16 These proclaim Christ out of love, knowing that I have been put here for the defense of the gospel; 17 the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but intending to increase my suffering in my imprisonment. 18 What does it matter? Just this, that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false motives or true; and in that I rejoice.
Code:
Or are we not more equally united ,indeed universal in nature ?
All who are validly baptized are united to the Head,a nd therefore, are members one of another.

Our separated brethren stand it the tradition of Apollos.

Thank-you .I understand your view , that all truth originally stems form Christs appointed Catholic church as pillar of truth …But that did not answer the question of how so many come to saving truth outside it’s magisterium . How is it that they read his Word and get saved ?
Outside the Catholic Church, david, they would not be saved. ** It is because of this Magisterium **that these “saved” Christians have the Scriptures to read.

Thus, they know that the Gospel of Mark, when they read it and feel the quickening of the Spirit, is inspired because that was discerned for them by the CC. They read the gospel of Thomas, however, and know it is not inspired because it was discerned for them by the CC.

Also, you stated this: how do you explain how millions around the world believe the same things,( even with 50,000 denominations ?)

Can you please state what these “millions around the world believe” that are the same thing, esp. in these 50,000 denominations. What are these beliefs that are the same in all 50,000 denoms that you are claiming?

.For instance, I thought the pope had “revelation” that indeed there was an Immaculate Conception, beyond a shadow of a doubt , that is, infallibly so in, 1850…
What was solemnly pronounced, declared and defined a certain point of time is not an indication that it only came to be believed at that point.

It has been the “constant teaching” in our house that when the kids come home from school they are to do certain things: hang up their backpacks, put their shoes away, wash their hands, take off their uniforms, eat their snack, finish their chores, practice their piano, etc etc etc.

Despite the fact that they have been doing this every school day for 2-11 years every once in a while we need to have a “family meeting” to pronounce, declare and define exactly who should be doing which job and how it is to be done. (Note: I try to ignore their incredulous looks that say, “What? We’re supposed to hang up our backpacks again this year?” or “What? You’ve never said that we had to take off our uniforms and hang them up!” )

At this council we recall what’s been done in the past, review the current norms and define again exactly what’s the expectation. Sometimes the kids complain that we are “making up new rules”, claiming we’ve “never done it this way before” when in actuality we are just pronouncing, declaring and defining a standard norm of our family.

For example, **the solemn declaration of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was not newly formed in 1854. **It was a constant belief held and spoken of for many years, sometimes correctly, sometimes incorrectly. Perhaps in order to alleviate any doubt and to correct any wrong information, God chose 1854 as the time to pronounce, declare and define this belief and practice.

However, this dogma was ancient, dating back to the times of the apostles.

As I replied in the other thread where you posted this.

The link and the books beings sold are total hogwash, rubbish, refuse.

You are obviously not here to learn.

The fact that you are helping spread lies means that you are in the snares of the devil, the father of lies.

You pretend to be a Christian in the same way the devil masquerades as the angel of light.

Why are you afraid of the truth that you need to go about stealthily?

Why don’t you offer one objection to the Catholic faith and then we will discuss?

What in particular confuses you?

Veneration of Mary? Praying to the Saints? The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist?

Post your question and then we can talk!

He has posted that same thing over 4 threads.

lol…you guys are really gettin in at me hard wow…ok…let me pose a question…do we all believe in the word that God has given us? meaning, His word “the bible”?

or do we need more?

Great question!

Clearly, you need more.

The Word of God, that is, the Sacred Scriptures, did not come with a table of contents.

You needed the Church to discern that for you.

Unless you can quote from a verse in the Bible that says that the book of Hebrews is inspired.

Chapter and verse, please.

(And, of course, one cannot use 2 Tim 3:16 because that does not discern for us whether Hebrews is inspired and the Gospel of Thomas is not. You need an extra-biblical authority to tell you which is inspired and which is not.)

And where, may I ask, did the Bible come from?

In other words, who determined which books were to be included in the Bible and which ones were to be excluded?

Refuting item # 28 in Rick Jones’ book is really a piece of cake.

Apart from the general teaching of the Gospels that Christ came to call sinners to repentance, certain biblical texts explicitly declare that he gave to the Church the power to judge sinners effectively in God’s name. To St. Peter he made the promise first. “And I will give to thee the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. And whatsoever thou shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shall loose on earth shall also be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19) Using the same words, save for the necessary change in the number of the pronoun, Jesus later gave the same promise to all the Apostles. (Matthew 18:18) Finally, after His Resurrection, he carried out this promise and conferred his authority on them. " ’ As the Father has sent me, I also send you.’ When he had said this he breathed on them, and he said to them, ‘Receive ye the the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them: and whose sins you shall retain they are retained.’ " (John 20:21-23)

So there you have it! Directly from the Bible. Plain and simple language. Easy to understand. All you have to do is believe it. Jesus said it and I believe it!

So much for Rick Jones. :hammering:

Correct .That is why i stated "carefully “: beyond a shadow of a doubt , infallibly so (debating is over ).As you say, " to alleviate any doubt.” However ,it differs from your scenario a bit because it was never stated , never stated as “dogma” before 1850 .
How is it different? It was the constant teaching of the apostles that Mary was the pure vessel, without sin, from the very beginning.

Do you have any evidence that the apostles taught something different? That Mary sinned and needed to go to confession perhaps?
To the joy of many ,and still the chagrin of some. I recall bitter debate over some of this , to the death ,amongst several Holy Orders.
Can you explain what you mean by “Holy Orders”?
[The seed is ancient , the dogma is not. I do not believe any council or earlier pope gave it any dogmatic standing .In fact ,creeds/councils on Mary make no mention of this dogma.
Interesting. You affirm that the seed of this dogma is ancient? :hmmm:

What is the earliest source within the patristic writings that refer to the IC, if you know, by any chance (not just her being personally sinless)?

Outside the Catholic Church, david, they would not be saved. It is because of this Magisterium
that these “saved” Christians have the Scriptures to read. **So you agree with me as stated earlier ,“the Catholic Church is author/father of all genuine spiritual experience on Earth” (per Her teaching)

We have been over that already ,as to what some of these dogmas are .**
