Do Catholic priests have the authority to forgive sins on earth?

Confession is a catholic strategy to keep people stuck with the church.
Confession is anonymous.

And be honest; if you’re going to bash a practice then do so in every institution that offers it, not just the one you dislike. Do you think that psychotherapy is a psychotherapist strategy to keep people stuck with psychotherapy? Is counseling a counselor strategy to keep people stuck with counselors?

Did not John Chrysostom deny the need for the confessional ?
Actually david NO, he did not deny the need for confession, he proclaimed the need for confession.

He said: Quote: Tell your sin to me alone in private so that I may heal your wound and release you from your pain. Unquote

Now while I agree that he claimed that he felt a private confession between a Priest and individual should be private, I agree with him 100%. I also do not agree with a publc confession before all of the Church, Not that I deny it, or condemn it, I just like it better between the Priest and I, then before the Priest and I and the whole Church:shrug:

But to each his own!!

In what way? I’ve heard this before, but I completely fail to understand how confession would effect such a thing. Perhaps you can connect the dots in this line of reasoning and explain? Because no one has bothered to before.
Odds are we won’t get an answer from a drive-by posting. Methinks this or “to keep the money flowing” is the default reasoning cited for why we Catholics do certain things that others disagree with. 🤷

That was THE COMMISSION, preach the Gospel… So we do not hear confessions to retain. WE preach the truth of the gospel ,and let the chips fall where they may with retaining and forgiving, as recorded in heaven .
No. The commission was:

[BIBLEDRB]Matthew 28:19[/BIBLEDRB]

The effect being:

[BIBLEDRB]Acts 22:16[/BIBLEDRB]

On the evening of the Resurrection…Christ walked through the door of the room…Upper Room…and in that evening gave the Apostles His power to forgive sins.

As another poster said, there is also a therapeutic effect of opening up to another human being. Afterall, the Church is a social institution. Church is people centered on Christ…together.

When we go to confession, we are not going to a man. When we go to confession we are admitting our sins to Christ Himself through Christ’s minister. The Minister is not acting on his own, he did not choose to do this.

The priest minister did not chose to be a minister because, every true priest acknowledges that he was chosen by Christ to be His minister, that he is truly unworthy of such a calling, and he does not regret and really is happy with his vocation.

The Sacrament of Holy Orders consecrates the priest in Christ in spirit and truth. And we are likewise called to pray continually for our priests. When we abandon them for temporary pursuits of this world, we all end up suffering.

It’s a strategy to keep people in their faith, by confessing to a priest, you feel more as you are a part of the church, like you are ‘obliged’ to complete the seven sacraments and to confess once in a small period, this plan keeps people more involved with church actions, ideas, and forget to make their own thoughts.
I think it’s a good strategy even if I don’t agree with it contents

Do you have proof to back this up? Or is just your personal theory?

I agree with you, It was a strategy that was started by Our dear Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to stay stuck with him the CC the Living Christ.

And do you ever wonder, that it does work .

Because who else besides the CC claims to have this power? I have never heard the Protestant Church ever claim to have this power, simply because they know they did not receive it because they do not have Holy Orders.
It’s a good strategy, but nothing really prove that it was started by jesus, lots of bible existed and church only used 4.
You know what Peter said, If not please read it in Acts 5:29 But Peter and the apostles said in reply, We MUST OBEY GOD rather than MEN!! Read on and take advice (good advice may I add) from the Sanhedrin named Gamaliel in 34. Be careful what you are about to do to these men, (are these MEN not Priests of today), As the Sanhedrin stated you will not be able to destroy them, you may even find yoursleves fighting against God.:o

When you deny the power given to the Priests in the Sacrament of Holy Orders, and deny the power given to them by this to forgive sins in the name of Christ, are you not fighting against God. Something to think about!!
I cannot find myself fighting God because i don’t beleive he exist, and I won’t fight him if I beleive in his existence.
asking god for forgiveness without the presence of priests is not ‘fighting god’

Documentation please.
Use Google, you’ll find many historical facts, read about history before and after the council of Nicaea. observe the old civilizations that lived before and after Christianity.
you’ll notice how similar they are.
Google the origin of 25 December ( birth of Jesus ) and the similarity between some old gods and Jesus.

Think about it and search for a proof for it. I was not giving it as a proof. just telling my opinion which might be true
The monkey is on your back, not mine for proof of such historical weight.
True historians are not revisionists and do not rely on ‘what might be true’.
That is fantasy.
Please provide the documentation of your claim.

The psychotherapist would be god and not the priests, the priests can take the role of secretary, but you can get to a psychotherapist without a secretary. right?

Hey, I don’t need to prove anything, if you want real proofs, search for yourself (google, books, history, documentaries). not all replies in this forum contain documents or proofs.

You’re making some pretty strong accusations, I am simply asking you for the source.
