Do Catholic priests have the authority to forgive sins on earth?

My denomination is of one mind also.We do not quarrel over doctrine also.Guess we must be the “Church”.
But you do quarrel with every other denomination. The Holy Spirit is not the author of confusion. Further, your church was fouded by a man in the 16th Century or later. Hence your denomination has no historical connection to Jesus Christ.

If Protestants are fully satisfied with their own beliefs, then why are they here? Who are they going to convince?

Catholic means universal.

In the Christian context, universal means that Christ died for all.

You totally missed the point. I was responding to what you said … and what you said is that the universal Church IS the body of ALL born again believers in Christ “whether Catholic,Orthodox Protestant …”
Now I ask you again: how can Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant be the same “universal church” when they disagree and quarrel over doctrine? Can the same universal Church reject the trinity and believe the trinity at the same time? Can the same universal church teach that Jesus is God and at the same time teach that Jesus is an archangel? Can the same universal church teach regenerative baptism and at the same time reject regenerative baptism?
Is that possible David?

We have plenty proof right here that Catholics argue with other denominations.Just because you argue /defend /put forth your beliefs with those different doe not make one’s church -not one. By your OWN definition of church ,that is, physical succession (laying on of hands from Peter to now),Maybe you are right. But the Jews that crucified Jesus also claimed real physical succession to their Father Abraham… Our succession is a spiritual one ,going back to the Garden of Eden, the first faith promise,of a Savior-a much older ,perfect in the spirit, tadition.

Perhaps we are looking at the external qualities of “church” as in what she teaches.Yes ,“church” must be truthful in its doctrines but is that what we are all about ?.I thought it is a relationship ,made possible by the Blood of the lamb. A relationship with the Father Son and Holy Ghost ,forming His Body…For all that to be one must be born again ,your name be written in the book of life .Doctrinal issues are aside Either you are in His church or not, you are born again or not.The definition must be so that include all those, whether Protetsant or Catholic etc

But the Lord said that if we love Him, we will keep His commands. Just crying out, “Lord, Lord!” isn’t enough. (Right?) How, then, are we to know what it is that Jesus commands? For example, the Catholic Church says that it is against the command of Christ for a divorced person to remarry. Conversely, there are at least some Protestants who don’t have a problem with such remarriage. Obviously, both can’t be right. Who is right, and how do you know? Adulterers won’t inherit the Kingdom, after all; so who is right as to what constitutes adultery?

And please don’t get side-tracked into a discussion of marriage.

Would you say that God preserved them from writing error into his word? Because that’s the definition of infallible. Either they were infallible, or you can’t trust the bible to be accurate. Can’t really have it both ways there.
God preserved His Word, a subtle difference, IMO.

My bad. So you do believe that the HS continues to guide the catholic church?

We already agreed that no one in the CC is infallible.
I can’t speak to the issue of the Holy Spirit and the CC. IMO, the church Jesus founded is far bigger than the CC and would include many of the members of the CC.

Dokimas, what do you think Jesus meant when He said the following to the fallible apostles:

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
Good question for which I can only guess because it’s not really spelled out for us. I can say that IMO it most likely is NOT what you or I think it means.

Yes, it does. Jesus is at war with the devil right? Jesus referred to the devil as the father of lies. What did Jesus promise His Church? That she will be led into all truth.
Otherwise we will have no way of knowing what is true. If God did not protect His Church from error, then every single heresy that sprouted in the Church’s history has as much validity as the orthodox Christian claims.

Protected them yes, but not promised that they will be led into all truth. That promise came only with Jesus for His Church.

Look at what happened in the 1930s at the Lambeth Conference: Contraception which used to be regarded by every single Christian denomination as a sin, was suddenly no longer a sin. A lie has crept into the teaching of the Anglican Church and everyone followed suit after.

But God preserved the Catholic Church from that error so she remained the only one who held fast to that true teaching that all Christians before 1930 have held to.
Thank you for taking the time to share what you believe.

This is a non-catholic part of CAF.

We learn things from you guys and I think you learn from us what we believe.

And there are non-believers looking on that maybe you and I can exhibit the love of Jesus and the Truth of the Gospel before that they too may be saved from the torment of their hell.

Yes. And when you put it next to church -the catholic church, it should mean all those who have accepted His free gift, of His atoning death and resurrection.

Some, but not all of the Jews then rejected the spiritual Kingdom. Those Jews who accepted the Kingdom became the “Church throughout Galilee and Judaea” (Acts 9:31), or “Ecclesia Kataholes” as it is in the Greek and “Catholic Church” as that term is transliterated into English.
I could not find Kataholes in Greek (niv/nasb),just ecclesia =church.

How is scripture not spelled out for you? I am asking you what you think brother? What’s your answer? This is not an answer:

*I can say that IMO it most likely is NOT what you or I think it means. *

Dok, do you agree with benedictus2 regarding the following:

The Scripture is NOT always spelled out for us. We don’t have all the answers. That’s fine with me.

I thought I made it clear, but I guess not. I don’t have an answer.

So, it doesn’t seem obvious to you that Jesus gave His apostles the authority to forgive sins or to not forgive sins?

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

The devil is the enemy and the father of lies. Jesus did say that He would led His church into all Truth. That does NOT mean the church always follows perfectly.

Not all incorrect teaching is herecy, IMO. IMO, herecy is teaching that draws people away from Jesus, the God/Man Who died for our sins. That teaching leads people to hell. Not all wrong teaching leads people to hell.
