What a joke! This is pure takkiya!

Actually, both statements are from the Qur’an. 2:256 and 60:8. 😛

And now I shall predict the future inshaaAllah…

Vickie will now claim that this has been “abrogated” by another verse although there is no contradiction, and the verse she will give (probably 9:5) has to do with a specific situation and has nothing to do with freedom of religion.

I brought up freedom of religion in Catholicism, and when challenged explained that Islam teaches freedom of religion. In fact, the purpose of “jihad” is to establish freedom of religion.

It’s not a crime to practice religious freedom, or to change one’s beliefs. If it were, then nobody would be allowed to become a Muslim!

But when a person instead of changing his beliefs actually begins to attack the Muslim state, he is in effect committing treason.

Naturally this is not something which should exist today in the world, and unfortunately people are killed unjustly in some places of the world citing this reason. But in reality it doesn’t apply today.
Deception, deception! The jihad you mention is to establish Islam as the only religion accepted by “Allah”, and to destroy all other religions and forms of government and establish Islam’s barbaric sharia laws!

For an example of how some folks feel about religious freedom, please see the thread, in this section of the forum, about Oprah and the “new age” teaching she is participating in. 😉

Would Catholics fight to defend someone else’s right to not be a Catholic?

Does the Catholic Church teach or promote freedom of religion?
Perhaps we all need to listen to the Pope’s speech at the UN this week…which is planned to stress religious freedom for all peoples - it might be a good reminder for all of us!

In the present the church is not against religous freedom, in the past it was but it made sense givin the time period.

Here is a quick note on the documents sited earlier. I for one am glad the church changed or developed their idea of human dignity to include religion.

Historically, it seems that when the Catholic church is IN power, they often used that power to suppress those of other faiths.

But when they are NOT in power (as in the USA), they believe in religious freedom.

This is how things seem to me, historically speaking.

Perhaps individuals in the Catholic Church have sinned this way, but it is contrary to the doctrine. Unfortunately, power corrupts throughout history and I will not argue with you that some of the powerful men in the Catholic Church have been corrupted as well. However, I think Sister Amy, who started this thread, was making a point to those of us in the Church who are not in power that we need to live the life of tolerance and respect that is in our doctrine and not repeat these errors of the past. I believe, if I am reading this correctly, that she was making the point that WE, the regular people, are the Church and it is our voice - whether that be tolerance or intolerance- that is the voice of the Catholic Church that the world hears.

What you describe is forbidden in Islam. Force (even jihad) is NEVER allowed to be used to establish Islam as the only religion.

It is ONLY allowed to establish FREEDOM of religion, and the CHOICE for people to choose their own religion.

In a Muslim country, other religions are supposed to be protected. In fact, some very beautiful churches were built under the reign of the Muslims. How could this be if Islam destroyed other religions? Clearly you’re speaking nonsense.

So if the Catholic Church teaches that people are entitled to freedom in religion…

why are people here so angry and violent towards non-Catholics?
Those Catholic people you claimed being angry towards non-Catholic is not necessarily the representative of the Roman Catholic Church. If I find a muslim murderer, does it mean that Islam teach murder? A person who believe is one religion should reflect the teaching of such religion in his/her behavior. But, still an “inappropriate” behavior of a person does not necessarily reflect the religion he/she believes. I think you will agree with me. I don’t believe that you are too naive to generalize a religion’s teaching based on the behavior of some (not even all) of its follower.

Jihad is a doctrine in Islam whose definition depends on which Muslims you are asking.

Jihad means a spiritual battle. To more moderate Muslims, it denotes the spiritual INTERNAL battle that Muslims engage in, to purify their own souls.

To fundamentalist Muslims, it is taken literally, to mean a holy war waged against non-Muslims.

In Muslim nations, non-Muslims have often had to pay the jizya, or poll tax, to help support mosques. The Quran mentions this (if you need sura verses, just ask.)

OVERALL, speaking as a religious Jew, and taking into consideration the entire history of Islam and Christianity as they both relate to my people, I’d still rather live under Islam than Christianity.

For one, Jews in Spain were treated far better by the Muslim rulers than by the later Catholic ones. Plus, the Muslim and Jewish understanding of pure monotheism is much clearer between our faiths than it is between our faith and Christianity.

Someone will say, “But Muslims hate and kill Jews!” No, what the (fundamentalist) Muslims hate is not Jews but zionists. The two are not always the same. I am a religious Jew but I am not a zionist, in fact I am anti-zionist for JEWISH theological reasons…(traditional Judaism teaches that the Jewish STATE cannot be properly restored until the Messiah comes.)

Domestic Churches once again under attack in West Java : INDONESIA
Jakarta (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Around 150 members of the Mosque Movement Front (FPM) and the Anti-Apostasy Front have taken to the streets of Bandung to demand the closure of private homes being used for church activities. The protest which took place June 14 last, set out from the al-Ikhlash mosque in Soreang Indah arriving at Katapang district offices.

FPM head Suryana Nur Fatwa said that if the administration and the Religious Community Communication Forum failed to close down the churches, the group would: “Every violator must stop their activities or the FPM will be forced to close the domestic Churches down”. According to Fatwa 26 private homes which had been turned into churches by Christian communities in Bandung regency, “Seventeen of them have stopped operating of their own free will, but nine others are still carrying out their activities”.

For the past three years West Java has noted an increase in violence and fundamentalist pressures against the Christian community’s, above all against the so called domestic Churches are illegal. To counter the problem over a year ago the Indonesian government approved the long awaited 1969 Ministerial Decree (SKB No 1/1969), regulating the construction of places of worship. But the long legal procedures and the difficulty in gaining permission build still force numerous communities to practise their faith “illegally”.

Simon Timorason, the head of the West Java chapter of the Indonesian Churches Communication Forum, is urging the government to “take the initiative in providing land for minority groups in order to prevent such problems from arising”. Simon has recorded 70 disputes involving residents and Christian communities using private homes as churches since January 2004. Most of the cases took place in Bandung regency, as well as Bekasi, Bogor, Garut, Purwakarta and Subang

We thought that you had an ulterior motive in asking the original question. Now we see what it is.

Your initial question is a very odd one indeed. It is a purely secular political and non religious question. That is why there was an initial hesitency in answering it. The Church is about the truth not about power politics. Power politics was intentionally, as I believe, or unitentionally, as some insist, the victory of Protestantism to the extent that it was a victory. I believe Catholics are genuinely sad about politics overwhelming religion in the West. If others wish to believe a lie there’s not much we can do about it except plead with them to consider the truth as a viable alternative before it is too late to change your mind. The Church is the “pillar and ground of truth”. If political power happens to be something we are able to use sometimes we use it. That is not true of other religions because they know not the fullness of truth. All they have is power politics.

I’ve noticed an interesting thing: of all the religions in the world, there are only two who historically have used violence to make others join their faith: Islam and Christianity (though I know Christianity no longer does this.)

And those are also the only two religions that believe their way is the only right way.

I wonder, is there a connection?

Yes, Islam teaches that non-Muslims are allowed freedom of religion! And more! They are to be treated with kindness and justice!

Judging all Muslims by what the minority extremist fundamentalist ones do, is like judging all Catholics by the minority sedevacantists like Mel Gibson, who get drunk and spout off about Jews.

Hm… I think if you stay tuned, you will see what I’m talking about.
I suppose that means that you intend to insult Catholics long enough until they say “please stop”. Then you will accuse us of violence. Fascinating approach. Dishonest to be sure, but not original.
