When I took a religion class my teacher said that she had a student who was Muslim who said that Muslims think that Jesus was crucified but iin being crucified he took it to far. Please note:I am only writing what I heard and that perspective actually bothers me a bit. However when a close relative of mine recently took religion she was taught that Muslims think that Jesus was not crucified but he did ascend into Heaven. What I am asking is if anyone could answer my question so that I could straighten out my facts on what Muslims think happened to Jesus.Thank you very much so for your time and God bless.

Muslims Believe There WAS a Crucifixion, But That JUDAS ISCARIOT Was The One Crucified In The Place Of Jesus, Not Christ Himself. And That Jesus DID Ascend To Heaven.

Ironically, Muslims ALSO Do Not Deny The Virgin Birth AND The Miracles Attributed To Jesus, But STILL Give Our Lord And Savior Secondary Status Beside Muhammed, Who Performed No Miracles And Was NOT Born of A Virgin.

If they did believe in the Crucifixion it could have been changed after the first Koran’s were burnt.

Islam believes in Christ as the holiest of men so they do have this right in some respects. Infact Mohammad attests to that. But 590 years after the fact, can cause lots of misconstruction of the Jesus that the Church has been proclaiming since 33AD.

They also believe Jesus will come at the end of times, not come save and get His people. But, they believe He will come to tell all Christians that we all got it wrong, that He isn’t the Son of God and that we must submit to Islam.

The idea that Jesus did not die on the cross stems from the Quran in S. 4:157-158:
"And because of their (the Jews) saying: We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s messenger- they slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain. But Allah took him up unto Himself. Allah was ever Mighty, Wise." (M. M. Pickthall)

In spite of the Quranic affirmation that Jesus was not crucified or killed there is no substantiation within the Quran itself that someone else, namely Judas, died in the place of Christ. All the text says is that it was made to appear as if Christ had been crucified. How this was done remains unanswered.

Do Muslims think Jesus was crucified or not?

As Muslims they have to stand by the Quran but whether they really believe it depends on how they are able to ignore the overwhelming evidence that Jesus actually died and that this constitutes a major belief of Christians and agreed by ancient historians.

I don’t know where it says: But I’ve read once that Muslims believe that a person looking similar to Jesus was crucified.

I ask the Muslim lurkers-

Do you realize how devious this would be -GOD faking Jesus’ death?

God would have deceived Jesus’ mother -precious Mary, all HIS followers? God will have deceived hundreds of thousands of Christians?

To what end? Why would GOD want to deceive in such a way?

All Muslims believe that Jesus did not die on the cross.

Some believe there was substitute person, others say Jesus was gathered up by GOD before HE actually died.

Some believe Jesus is alive and in heaven right now.

Some believe Jesus died at a very old age.

Muslims have trouble understanding:
Deuteronomy 21
23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

and how Jesus would:

**Galatians 3 **
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

Muslims don’t read this as the person being guilty of a crime -being cursed and so was punished by being hung on a tree, but that the person hanging on the tree even though innocent is cursed.

Deuteronomy 21
22 If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole,

Which is so interesting because it is the rape victim that is most often punished in Islam- the victim allowed or encouraged this disgrace [rape] to happen to them.

as far as i know, muslims belive that jesus was not crucified, there also was a theory that when the romans gave jesus the sponge that was supposed to be full with water when jesus was on the cross was actually some sort of drug that put jesus into a “fake death” state, this is just a theory, it is not my opinion, jesus died on the cross, thats my opinion:)

I read on an Islamic Board how he supposedly went and lived his life out in India of all places. However, they wouldn’t say exactly where just that i’d have to go there and find it. I also heard he was impaled on a stake. So it would seem there are many opinions on Jesus’s death. I for one as a Catholic believe the crucifixition happened. In a way I have to thank the muslims on that site for putting up with me. I went there with the wrong attitude, thinking evangelization. Yet, I was taken to task by my lack of complete muslim theology specifically on the Koran and how fiercely they defend it. I’m not going to learn the Koran like they wish, but I will learn all I can about Catholic Theology. I have a book on an Early Church Father St. John of Damascus, that I plan on reading thoroughly very soon.
Peace be with you.

Similar to the Gnostics beliefs.
Yes, I’ve got a friend who is Muslim.
And he keeps telling me how similar Islam and Christianity is.
And that Muhammed also talked with Christians. But I think Muhammed never talked to an orthodox Christian, but to gnostics which are/were a heretical sect.
So I think it is not astonishing that many parts in Islam are similar to Gnosticism concerning the nature of Christ e.a. (et alia - and other things).

This and many others are speculative theories that are thought by Muslims to explain S 4:157 that Jesus was not crucified. AFAIK they are not the official Islamic position regarding this. There is nothing, no textual evidence or otherwise to substantiate them.

The more intellectual Muslims would simply don’t believe any of those theories as they simply complicate things and ultimately do not explain S4:157 satisfactorily anyway.

We can understand why the speculation though - because if he was not crucified, then question that need to be asked is what happened to him, what actually happened at the cross? As we can see, there is obviously no answer for this except for the standard, 'Allah knows best".

What we, as non-Muslims, can derive from this is that Muslims are somehow troubled by the credibility of the Quran that says Jesus was not crucified and thus the needs to explain it (which they cannot do so) and in the process actually make a mess out of it.

This is a belief of a heretical (in the view of mainstream Islam) sect, the Ahmadis. We had a couple of Ahmadi Muslims posters before in the CAF who propagated this belief here.

Reuben’s first post clearly explained the perspective of Muslims. Or rather, the correct perspective to have of Muslims form his position, at least.

No crazy talk, no wild allegations. Just what Muslims believe, why they believe it, and his dispute with what seem to be unsatisfactory explanations on some details.

Quite clear. Thanks, man. 👍

Yes, Ive heard that. Thanks.

And wait till you hear what the Jews think of this kind of thing. 😉

Similar to the Gnostics beliefs.
SOME Gnostic Beliefs State That-----The Gnostics Were A Varied And Diverse Collection Of Various “Groups” That Had A Loose “Connection” Belief-Wise To Each Other… Some Stated Jesus Did Not Die On The Cross, Other Groups Accepted The “Standard Narrative.”🙂

Do YOU Believe Jesus Died On The Cross And Was Resurrected?

“Details.” Yes, if Christ was crucified or not is a “detail” in Islam. “Why they believe it” is because the Koran says so, i.e. “they killed him not.” It is really that simple for muslims. It is not that important, they contend.

Based on a few internet discussions on it, I agree that Reuben summarized it pretty well. I also agree with him that it is a major, almost fatal flaw in Islamic doctrine. Although I think Mohammad was wise to ignore the issue if he couldn’t dispute it.

I know Amy feels differently, but if one is going to come 700 years after Christ, claim most everything His followers believe is wrong, then one should be able to do more than just shrug off the crucifixion.

That’s how I see it anyway.

Check out all the verses talking about Jesus being raised up:

2.56 Then We raised you up after your death: Ye had the chance to be grateful

3:55 Behold! Allah said: "O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the Day of Resurrection: Then shall ye all return unto me, and I will judge between you of the matters wherein ye dispute.

2.56 Then We raised you up after your death: Ye had the chance to be grateful.

3:54*And (the unbelievers) plotted and planned, and Allah too planned, and the best of planners is Allah.

To the Christian all the following verse says is that the Jews did not kill Jesus, the Romans did. I don’t even blame the Romans. We all, because of our sin killed Jesus-HE died for us.

4:157 That they said (in boast), “We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah”;- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not:-

4:158 Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise;-

Check it out:
10.094 If thou wert in doubt as to what We have revealed unto thee, then ask those who have been reading the Book from before thee: the Truth hath indeed come to thee from thy Lord: so be in no wise of those in doubt

It is possible Miohammad learned his false crucifixion story from what we know is the false Gospel of Barnabas. Not to be confused with the Epistle of Barnabas.
