Another great quote:

Bl. Pope John Paul II expressly noted to a conference:

“The Church’s teaching on contraception does not belong in the category of matter open to free discussion among theologians. Teaching the contrary amounts to leading the moral consciences of spouses into error.” L’Osservatore Romano, July 6, 1987

Though it is important to note that the Church Artificial Birth Control is really not the best term to use…rather “Contraception”…for it is not the ‘artificial’ part that is the problem…but the contraceptive…(see Compendium for example). (this also not to say that there is any ABC that is not contraceptive…)
Thanks Bookcat for rounding out that defintion. I thought last night after logging off, I should have dug around the post where you mentioned, but I thought you might just be online to do what you have just done. So thanks, cuz I did not have to do any thread digging.

God bless you.

Compedium issued by Pope Benedict XVI
  1. When is it moral to regulate births?
2368-2369
2399

The regulation of births, which is an aspect of responsible fatherhood and motherhood, is objectively morally acceptable when it is pursued by the spouses without external pressure; when it is practiced not out of selfishness but for serious reasons; and with methods that conform to the objective criteria of morality, that is, periodic continence and use of the infertile periods.
  1. What are immoral means of birth control?
2370-2372

Every action - for example, direct sterilization or contraception - is intrinsically immoral which (either in anticipation of the conjugal act, in its accomplishment or in the development of its natural consequences) proposes, as an end or as a means, to hinder procreation.

I think we need to realize the wording, which is HAVE. Guess what? I HAVE used the birth control pill as a celibate single woman as an attempt to control mentral problems (yeah I didn’t have severe cramps, instead I had severe depression, I’ll keep my cramps. thanks.) I did not use it for contraception. Also, a Catholic may have used it 30 years ago before her conversion. So yes she has used it. To be accurate it must be worded that they are CURRENTLY using it, if they know it violates the church, and WHY they are using it.

Just to play devil’s advocated, what should a couple use that doesn’t already have children but don’t want to be open to life “right now?” Think those married college students that want to postpone having a child until after graduation.

(Before anyone jumps on me. I use NFP, I voted that ABC is NOT morally permissible and I am simply taking the above statement to another degree.)
If people are not ready to be parents, they shouldn’t be married.

Yeah the wording and options for that poll kind of sucked, I asked the mods to let me edit it but they did not respond. I would say though that using the birth control pill for cramps when you were single is not the same thing as a married couple using it for contraception. If you currently use it for contraception, probably the best option would have been the first one. I did ask about the converting thing if you scroll down a few posts. If you have more to say though, we should probably be having this discussion on that thread though, not disrupting Little One’s. 🙂

That is soooo true. That distinction is important to make for a newbie. Especially since there is natural contraception too! (withdrawl) and ABC can be used for non-contraceptive purposes!!! It’s totally a misnomer.

“equally to be excluded, as the teaching authority of the Church has
frequently declared, is direct sterilization, whether perpetual or
temporary whether of the man or woman” (Humanae Vitae, 14). This condemns
tubal ligations, vasectomies, and the Pill.
Similarly excluded is every action which, either in anticipation of the
conjugal act, or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its
natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render
procreation impossible” (Humanae Vitae, 14). Such unnatural forms include
the Pill, the intrauterine device, foams, diaphragms, condoms, withdrawal,
mutual or solitary masturbation and sodomistic practices.

(Wasn’t sure if you were affirming or negating the idea.)

Samiam1611,

Now looking back I should have used contraception in the poll, but I still have a lot to learn about it as well.

I used ABC becuase we were doing this as a spin off of another thread. And ABC came up quite a bit.

Thanks for that feedback.

God bless and have a nice day.

No, I do not believe that practicing ABC is morally permissible.
I used ABC in the past but I will never to do again.
I´m pregnant with baby #2 and will use nfp after the birth.
