My Mil always blessed herself when she passed a Catholic Church out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament

Men used to tip their hats out of respect when they passed a church. I think it’s a shame that this custom has died out. I have started blessing myself when I pass a Catholic church

It is a small act, but I think a pious one

Yes I do - and when I pass a cemetery as well as a prayer for the dead.

It is entirely proper, since Christ is present in the Tabernacle. We do it.

I am going to add the cemetery prayer to my list of things to begin to do…thank you for telling me this

Could you direct me to the Prayer for the Dead? Thank you!

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.

And let the perpetual light shine upon them.

And may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Yes I do. As a convert who watched Mother Angelica religiously(😉 ) she was talking one day about making the sign of the cross when passing a Church & how Men used to tip their hat when passing by, also when speaking the name of Jesus it was custom to make a little bow or nod of your head. So after that show quite a few years ago I started making the sign of the cross when passing a Church or when an Ambulance passed by.

Yes we do too and when an ambulance goes by we pray a Hail Mary, something we were taught by our Mother’s when we were growing up. I didn’t know about a prayer when going past a cemetary, but now that I do, we’ll include that. (Although we hardly ever pass one ever in a normal event of a day.) We do however pray daily for the poor souls in purgatory though.👍

We also say a Hail Mary when an ambulance passes. I love that tradition and have taught that to other parents during our baptismal prep sessions. I am glad to see that others do it as well. Funny story…we have stop signs around our church at the intersections. However, people blast through them, but they slow down or almost stop and we have seen people make the sign of the cross at all the shrines and the church doors…as they drive by. Now if they only would stop at the stop signs too!.

Yes, we do. We also say a prayer when passing a cemetary or funeral processions for the dead & when there is an emergency vehicle for those who might be injured & those helping them.

I bow my head when I go by Church and say a our father or hail mary as ambulance goes by.

Yes I do that, and now my son has the habit of doing the same. We always pass in front of a Catholic church when we drive to school.

I always bless myself when passing a Catholic church. It’s quite rare to see others do it, because we are in a minority here in London. It’s quite strange when I go to Ireland to see practically everyone on the bus blessing themselves, going past a church or cemetery - even the bus driver!
It’s nice when the bus passes a Catholic church here in London, I bless myself and catch sight of someone else doing the same and we exchange a smile.
Being brought up as an Anglican though, I was always taught to stop and pray when a funeral cortege passed. My grandad would always raise his hat.

My father does it all the time. I did a few times because of him, but I no longer do it, but I am not really religous. I am trying to be but it’s not working out right now.

Don’t give up magic stick, many very religous people have felt just like you do at some point in their lives…even saints have

When I pass a Catholic church I always bow my head and say “hello” to Jesus. I also have adopted the practice of praying for the deceased when passing a cemetary and for all those in connection with the ambulance that is passing by. I love it that there are so many of you with the same practices!🙂

YES I DO!!! 🙂 If I’m walking I’ll even genuflect! Like me trip to New Orleans we passed the Cathedral and everyone but my family looked at me like I was crazy because I was down on one knee crossing myself. I bet that scared those fortunes tellers out there! 😃

Yes. I usually leave my hat on, but I always cross.

I take public transit, so I always try to keep an eye peeled for a Catholic church. If I’m in doubt, I’ll cross anyway. Why look for trouble? 🤷

I also do so for Orthodox Churches, since they also have the Real Presence.

I have never given cemeteries a thought – thank you for pointing them out! I shall offer a prayer for the souls in Purgatory now when I pass.

I always doffed my cap or saluted (as appropriate) when a funeral procession passed. I also still doff my cap when passing a cenotaph.
