Do you ever cry during mass?

I’m in, I’m a crier too. Nine times out of ten it hits me during the Alleluia. It was really bad this past Easter.

Also during communion it will hit me hard, since I cannot receive since I’m not in full communion (gotta get this marriage convalidated asap). :o When I do feel it coming on I’m totally focused on the crucifix. Come to find out that the crucifix in my church was made by one of our parishioners. It’s really stunning to me.

And without fail I’ll cry every Mother’s Day, because one of the girls in the choir will sing Ave Maria. Just her & the piano. She has an angelic voice.

But yes I will try to hide it. Many Sunday’s while I’m waiting for Mass to start I’m digging in my purse to pull out a few kleenex & just hold onto to them throughout.

And I have noticed I’m not the only one…:o

I tend to cry at mass as well. It usually hits me when we pray for the deceased. My husband of 26 years passed away 8 months ago and I am still dealing with that grief. It’s only been within the last month that I have actually been able to get through some days without crying. Even now, just writing about it, causes me to tear up. Going to mass is helping me through these times but sometimes it catches me off guard and the tears fall. It got so bad once that I barely made it through communion. I received communion and instead of returning to my pew, I had to head for the restroom to try and get myself under control. All I could do was sob and wait for it to pass. By the time I got myself straightened out, mass had ended. That made me feel bad that I wasn’t able to pull myself together in time for the final blessing at the end of mass. I’m just taking things a day at a time now and if I feel the need to cry, I just go with it and let it run it’s course.

***Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry pammy. 😦 I will keep you and your husband in my prayers. You did the right thing, allowing yourself to cry. I can understand you feeling bad, but God was right there with you…and He knew you needed to do that. I’m so sorry for your loss.

I ended up tearing up as mass was letting out today…the final song. It really isn’t that ‘sad’ of a song, but the lyrics are powerful. I also think I just feel a closeness in this new parish, that I didn’t feel in the prior one…***

I’m so sorry about your loss, and that your grief overwhelms you so. May God comfort you.

I think of tears during prayer, inside Mass or not, as a sort of a gift. It has been rare that I’ve been overwhelmed during Mass, but I understand what you’re saying. I don’t like when it gets to the point that I worry about being distracting or when the emotions keep me from functioning. Otherwise, though, having the grief or anxiety surface for God’s comfort or having the gratitude make itself felt seems something to be thankful for. So many struggle through feelings they can’t express or else don’t feel the momentous things in life at all.

I actually treasure the times I cry during prayer. I know the saints are sometimes asked to endure times of extreme emotional and spiritual dryness, that they have said that times of dryness are the hardest of all. We never know when that will be asked of us. If that happens, may we have the grace to persevere, even when we don’t have the emotions to support and express our compassion, adoration, joy, gratitude, or grief.

*I actually think that would be neat to see the priest cry during mass…I mean, not like I want to see anyone cry, but a cry of joy…of elation. *
Girl, They say Padre Pio used too cry and sobb during mass while consecrating the host. They say his masses used to take a long time because he would kneel and stair at the Host while crying. I read where his mass took on average 3 hours.

:o wow…He had an amazing life. I have always been personally fascinated by him…Thanks for sharing. that. I can’t imagine! ***

Not so often at the Roman Rite Mass, but at the Byzantine Divine Liturgy, often during the singing of “We have seen the true light, we have received the heavenly spirit. We have found the true faith, and we worship the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us!”

I’ve become a little ridiculous actually, much worse since I actually got confirmed on Easter Vigil. I am not a big crier, but mass has become absolutely too much for me, and each part of the mass brings new tears. It’s so overwhelming I can’t stand it. It’s too much, it’s too wonderful for me to stand. If I run through the different parts of the mass in my head I tear up. I get immensely impatient about this time of the week (wednesday) because I need for mass to hurry up and get here. Writing it is bringing up such feelings and now I have to quit.

passes everyone a Kleenex

Oh wow, congratulations to you! Your story brought tears to my eyes, thank you for sharing. I think it’s beautiful that you are crying during mass…being emotional is okay, especially when we have so much overwhelming joy and gratiitude for all the Lord has done for us, and continues to do! The reason I tear up, is I’m so unworthy of it all. 😦

:hug1:

I actually have gotten emotional esp. when we sign. It was something new to me as Now I have gotten more of a sense of what we are doing at mass as I have grown older. I must say that is one of my fav. things at mass that we get a chance to sign to praise God. Our church no matter what mass always has a choir at all times. I love to feel everyone praising together.

I almost cired during a Mass before I became Catholic! After years of not caring about my Evangelical Christian faith, I was pondering whether to enter the Catholic Church. I was asking God alot of questions at this point and during a Mass with my friend, I was suddenly overcome by this great emotion. I believe God was calling me home.

Strange thing is, I’m not very emotional, I barely ever cry. I didn’t cry at my own Confirmationm, (thougth I did get teary for some reason during the Baptisms). I have gotten misty-eyed during the Consecration a couple times. I remember that it was my thirst for Christ and seeing him lifted up in the Eucharist that made me want the faith in the first place. It boggles my mind that the Lord loves us so much.

I’ve cried at Mass before. The main example was at the Papal Mass in DC last year and I remember just dropping to my knees in joy during the Consecration.

I usually get misty eyed or have cried quietly on Sundays when the Host is lifted or during the Alleluia. This has really hit me recently when I began to question my vocational discernment and even my Catholicism. I went to Mass and was feeling really discouraged and then during the Consecration everything became real to me again. It was almost like an Evangelical born-again experience (except not haha) where I just felt this immediate connection with the Holy Spirit and I knew that Jesus was truly present. I certainly cried at that point. I guess seeing an 18 year old guy crying at Mass was an unusual site for some but I felt so alive again.

If you feel like crying, cry.
God coming into you is a very holy and moving experience.
Dont care what others think when the spirit is in you.

Today I participated in my first Hour of Adoration. It is something I never have done before, though I do not know why. I am not sure what caused me to go and I am so very glad I did. I started crying during recitation of the 15 meditations booklet. I read and reread most of them. I can’t believe how humbling the expierence was for me and how “alive” I felt in His Most August Majesty! These tears I cry no longer make me feel AS embarrassed as they once did. Trouble was I couldn’t find a tissue to save my life. Much to the dismay of the others there. I had to snuffle till I got home.

I think crying is awesome because I now know God is in me and that means I must be doing something right!

God Bless!

Can you imagine what it would have been like to be at Mass with Padre Pio and see what you just described? I was at a Shrine once and in the house where the religious lived I saw a priest celebrating Mass by himself in one of the small Chapels. The intenseness of his praying was beautiful to behold. I was deeply touched by seeing this.

This is a wonderful thread. Every post is giving me inspiration and putting my tears into a new perspective.

Sometimes, I can almost get through mass without choking up. The two spots that always get me though, without fail, are when reciting the Lord’s Prayer and when saying, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you.”

I haven’t cried after receiving the Eucharist, yet, but after I return to my pew and kneel in prayer, my body is covered with chills. I take that as a good sign.

Thank you, Jesus!

I did this morning.:bighanky: I was overwhelmed by the Gospel reading, and then I started thinking about my nephew and his wife (for those who might not know, she cheated on him recently) They should be making their Easter plans, instead, they are not living together right now, and my nephew is so distrought. I am so sad for them. I’m sad for all the sin out there, and the sin that I have allowed myself to commit, even though I know God has forgiven me. I just felt so unworthy, and humbled…it wasn’t a bad thing, to cry, really.

I was just wondering if you ever cry during mass? 😦
That is very moving!

Yes I have. A few times. A bit embarassing sometimes but you just can’t help it. But often it is not because of a sadness in my life. It is usually during times when I am just so overwhelmed by the love of God perhaps from the reading or from the songs.

One time on the feast of St Therese when we starting singing her poem “To live by love” I could not continue singing for the tears.

The longest bout of crying I have ever done however was during Lauds. It was lent and we were chanting Hosea 11. I sobbed through the rest of the office. They thought I was going through a bad patch and they could not have been more wrong. The tenderness of God’s love in that passage so overwhelmed me.🙂

I often times tremble as I approach our Lord to receive him. Tear up lots when praying and giving thanks for this gift of the Eucharist. Cry at times, yes. It is a beautiful thing, this mass.

***Your stories are all so touching! I well up just reading them.

I sometimes also cry when I pray the Rosary…typically, when I pray alone…:o
God bless you all, for you all seem so open to the Lord, and His outpouring of love and mercy in your lives.***
