Do you ever cry during Mass?

When I first returned to the Church last year after my 26 year absence I got teary-eyed at every Mass, always during the consecration. My emotions were a mixture of joy at coming home, and sorrow as I realized what I had been missing out on all those years I was away.

I almost always get tears in my eyes during mass. I have so much to be grateful for, and the biggest thing it I am a Catholic and love being so. Attending mass is part of my soul.

It has never happened to me but it did once during the Eucharistic Adoration. Other two times I was in tears were when I was driving. I didn’t know how it all happened, but it did - It was some thoughts about Jesus’ Love that made me cry. Strangely, I think about His Love quite often, but it hardly makes me cry. The tears came unexpectedly.

I have to fight back tears every year when the passion is read. It upsets me so much to think of how mean people were to our Lord and how I could see the same thing happening today.

As much as the film hurts me, I would like to thank Mel Gibson for giving such a vivid visual of what Jesus endured for us.

Usually, the Christmas mass moves me to tears as well. This year, with my wife and I expecting our first child and having just watched the Nativity Story, I was practically sobbing!

Awesome thread!!!

Yes! When I first started attending Mass, tears would flow pretty much the whole time. While it has lessened in the last yr or so, it still happens. Not only Mass but sometimes when I pray or when others talk of their journeys.

Nothing to be ashamed about. Just know that there are others out there in your same position. Plus, think on the fact that your outpouring of emotion may help another who may be wavering in their faith.😉

Does listening to the organist count? (which isn’t exactly a compliment BTW) 😛

Now, I know some protestant denominations are known for having people cry in church, like Baptist churches.

If you are taking a poll, add me as one who has been moved to tears on more than one occasion. Especially at my own child’s baptism.

I love it. This thread is giving me goosebumps. During the memorial of good friday last lent I broke down and cried, and it was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. I really felt connected to Christ’s suffering. Several times since then I have been brought to tears after recieving the Eucharists. I thank God every time he blesses me with these periods of vulnerability, and I am never embarrassed because in that moment, my focus is only on Christ.

Don’t be embarrased!! I have cried several times. The first time I ever cried was after my unlce’s funeral (aside from crying at the wake and funeral). He was only 6 yrs older than me and was really close to me, I saw him as my older brother (even though he was my mom’s baby brother). After his funeral, when I went to Mass, I would hold a rosary in my hands, and just being at Mass made me cry because I’d remember him and the funeral.

It’s been almost 3 years since then, and sometimes I still cry for that same reason. Now, aside from that, I have cried for other things.

I married a JW, and I have cried because he is misguided and we’re not married through the CC. That makes me cry every now and then. I feel unworthy to be at Mass because I am not a “complete” Catholic (or that’s how I feel). I cannot receive communion, and it saddens me a lot.

So, don’t feel embarrased, a lot of people cry during Mass. I don’t feel embarrased because it comes from the heart and God knows that what makes you cry is sincere, and what’s better than crying in God’s home? He is there to confort you at all times. I feel protected when I cry there. I feel as if God’s sitting next to me listening to my sorrows.

This is a GREAT subject! I have at many many times through out my life cried at Mass. Either because of a very trying emotional trial I was going through, or just because of sheer Joy with the Lord. Yes, indeed, it is a wonderful consolation from the Lord but at times embarrassing as
well.😦 At one time only about a year ago I was sooo emotional at mass because of a trial within my marriage, that I gripped my hymnal so tightly I ripped part of the binding from it! (didn’t realize this until after Mass) Gave extra money and a note in the next week’s envelope to cover replacement. Mass usually is a VERY emotional time for me.

I am sorry to hear that, it seems very sad. Is there nothing the church can do for you to be able to go to communion? I remember a person in our church who had a girlfriend and was not annuled so all the twenty years I knew him he never went to communion and he was always downtroden. I know that thats not the way the bible tells us to be even though we will always have our troubles.
God bless you I hope you find a way to receive communion.

He is there to confort you at all times. I feel protected when I cry there. I feel as if God’s sitting next to me listening to my sorrows.
Yes he is with you to. OUr God is a loving God who relates to the heart of His people, may He bless you.

I remember a time when I couldn’t go to mass and Idesperatly wanted to go so I pryed and asked Jesus to allow me to receive Him in the spirit. My wife came home and straight away told me to get on my knees and she anointed me with the spiritual communion and she didn’t know I had prayed this way.

Sometimes I’ll be moved to tears during Mass. I find it very embarrassing! :o I don’t like to let others see me cry and it ends up being distracting because once the tears start rolling I put all my effort into hiding them.

Anybody else have this happen?
This is a blessing, I cry as well at times but it’s mainly that I get very misty. This is what caused me to convert, tears while watching a very Holy Mass.

Hi littleone, I’m working on getting my marriage “fixed” in the eyes of the CC through a thing called radical sanation, but the Vicar in charge of my case is very reluctant, and thinks I should wait to see if DH would convert (I don’t think he’ll do that any time soon)… 😦 The Bishop has to approve it though, so I’m hoping he agrees, that way my marriage is going to be valid, sacramental (because DH was validly baptized as a baby), and I will be able to receive communion once again!! 😃

My DH tells me that the day he saw me cry at mass was the day he knew he wanted to join the church and the same day he knew he wanted to marry me…

Maybe I shouldn’t have been trying to hide it either… I HATE crying in public!

I would have used a Crucifix with Jesus as my icon to begin. He is guiding me so I do not “write anything harmful, small or great”. I chose Ash Wednesday to tell my secret to people. Only my husband and a few chosen already know.
For as long as I can remember, I always cried after recieving Holy Communion. From 1st grade on…I can remember how joyous it was…in the 1950’s recieving the host, returning to my pew, and putting my head down, and talking to Jesus, I would wipe my eyes & nose with my fingers or my coat sleve. My heart was overflowing with love. It felt so good that I would keep my head down as long as I could. Thru Catholic school I went to mass every morning from 1st grade to 10th gr.
In the 1970’s, my husband and I were devout Catholics. As a Catholic family, we were bringing our children to Mass every Sunday. It was difficult to keep the tears away from my children and my husband during all these years. You see, I never told him either, I thought, something was wrong with me! I had no spiritual leader who I could talk to about this. I always kept my head down until the tears stopped!!!
Now here we are at present with our children gone & out on thier own. Three years ago I began reading the Catholic Bible, the book of life. Then my husband joined in. And the spiritual closeness was amazing. I then shared my secret with my husband. I told him that I cant hold back the tears anymore. Then came a more abundance of tears after Communion!!!
I had to actually fill my purse with kleenex.
I must clarify that these are tears of joy. When I recieve Holy Communion, I think I am welcoming the Father, Son & Holy Spirit into my heart and soul. As if someone comes to visit. I ask for the grace I will need till their next visit. I Adore Them, I give Them praise, I Give Them Glory. My tears flow like a river, and dont stop on their own. I have many different visions that come to me during this time.
I have actually reached a point in my Catholic faith in which I sometimes begin crying in my car on the way to Mass. All I can think about is recieving the BODY & BLOOD of Christ in my heart & soul. And this will give me everlasting happiness in heaven in God’s Kingdom.
I confided in a friend that I was also crying while reading the Bible about Jesus. She said I might have a gift from the Holy Spirit called The Gift of Tears.

Thank you so much for sharing that, it certainly is a gift and I believe that the more people who share these gifts and or about them the more we become aware about them and others will want to ask God for them.
God bless you for sharing thank you

:crying: :crying: Happends every time…while singing " Lamb of God"
If I don’t have klenex I’m in trouble! once I forgot to bring some and tapped on an elderly lady in front of me and asked for a klenex…she dug some out of her purse and said…“oh Honey” you poor thing, are you okay? I responed, yes I’m fine…just moved to tears.😛

It can happen. Sometimes Our Lady may have given a grace called “gift of tears”.

Since I am still fairly new to the Catholic faith, more recently it happens if there is a song about Mary that I hadn’t heard before (or hadn’t understood very well before).

The First Friday (evening Mass) where we all knew Pope John Paul II was extremely ill and not expected to live, I didn’t merely cry softly. It started that way, but then I started crying very hard and really very loudly like somebody very close to me had died. Fortunately I stopped crying loudly before Mass began. I used to watch the Pope on Christmas Eve sometimes (years before I signed up for RCIA). And after starting RCIA, I got two CDs of Pope John Paul praying the Rosary (in Latin with an announcer providing the mysteries in English). I think the CD had a lot to do with helping me to love praying the Rosary. And I had had a few physical healings which I attributed to listening to the Rosary CD. I’m also convinced that his prayers must have had quite a bit to do with my conversion.
