Do you ever cry during Mass?

Dear River Rat who drinks the Living Water,
You only wrote of shorter episodes of your feelings. But you sound much like me. I remember having tears shortly after making my 1st Holy Communion. Throughout my life I hid them, because I didnt know what was happening. I didnt find out that I had the Gift of Tears till just a few years ago. Now I know its nothing to be ashamed of. The Holy Spirit has given you the Gift of Tears also. There is info on this site to learn more.
But I want to talk about you more. You are blessed with the KNOWLEDGE to know what is really happening on tha alter during the consecration. In that little sentence ------ during consecration ----- -being overwelmed with the knowledge of what is taking place!!! To know that the bread and wine is being changed into Jesus Body and Blood. And to watch this exchange, watch the preist’s faces, and to be part of this is remarkable. This is a Gift of the Holy Spirit.
Last of all, you said, being in His presecne and feeling unworthy.
I understand what you mean. Recently I had a dream about Jesus. He came to visit me. He sat down on a chair & I sat on a farther chair. He padded his knee a couple times {meaning come here} I came alittle closer. He padded his knee again, but I was frozen, I couldnt move any closer to HIM. As glorious as was the situation, I felt unworthy in His Presecne.
But all I wanted to do was to lay prostrate in front of Him to honor Him. Maybe my fingertips would be within His Breath. Then I woke up. When I lifted my head, TEARS had covered down my face. I reached for a few kleenex to wipe my face. You see, I just received the Most Holy Eucharist at Mass. Music and singing went on till the end of the Mass. On my drive home I still relished in His Precense and thanked Him for the Visit.
Sincerely, Franny

often it feels like my heart is burning and going to burst. it feels like it is getting bigger and the heat from it expands past my being, throughout the church, and out into the city. sometimes i wonder if people can feel or see it…

I cry quite often, mostly because I am ashhamed of our failings as Human beings. I stand at the back of the church and if I am in particular pain it is easier to leave for a breath of air outside, without bothering others.

Sometimes I’ll be moved to tears during Mass. I find it very embarrassing! :o I don’t like to let others see me cry and it ends up being distracting because once the tears start rolling I put all my effort into hiding them.

Anybody else have this happen?
Yes, like others here, I have cried during the consecration. I am humbled at the amazing Gift our Lord has given us in the Eucharist!

I get carried away sometimes and I too, feel a little bit embarrased. Some people misconstrue it as you’re having a heavy load but in reality, I get moved to tears because I feel I’m there with Jesus and all the holy angels. I learned not to mind what other people think. I cry because I rejoice in the presence of our Lord!

Yes, quite a number of times. For various reasons. Sometimes, it’s just a song. Other times, when I see the broken Host. Or from one of the readings. Or from the homily. Or being grateful for just being there.

Peace!

i also cry for a number of reasons:

Sappy sentimentality; grateful I made it back to the Church in my 30’s; the awful new music makes me cry because I miss the old hymns; when I think of my dead parents, grandparents, relatives and other Catholics who were more faithful, more visible, and harder working than me I feel ashamed and I cry; the empty pews make me cry at times; a good Latin mass makes me cry; watching our old stodgy monsignor praying in the pews at mass just after he served mass earlier that morning; a chilling chord on the organ; a beautiful Angelus; watching a child participate in the mass; feeling connected that moment or that day; feeling lost and disconnected, stuck in the world; when I have had family problems; when I was younger and had boyfriend problems; when my prayers were answered and problems were resolved. Seeing a disabled person at church walking to communion. Sometimes just the way the light lands on the altar…not all tears are divinely inspired, sometimes they are just low threshold stuff, low seratonin, low blood sugar-maybe that’s why someone first thought of donuts after mass. Forgive my irreverence, those of you who have real moments of awe. I cry for many reasons both meaningful and meaningless.

To you, Auntie A, I want to say: no tears are ever meaningless. Yours are real, yours are beautiful despite what you may think.
You are an honest person with honest feelings and to read your words makes you MY friend. May God bless you. :hug1:

I have to be honest and say that I did not read all the answers to this, but I wanted to respond anyway.

Yes, I am sometimes moved to tears at Mass - sometimes during the Consecration, sometimes receiving Communion, sometimes after receiving, during certain hymns, and many other times. Also, after receiving, when I return to my seat, my heart starts pounding just out of nowhere. It will only last a few minutes, then it goes away and I’m totally fine.

The tears can be for a number of emotions as well: sadness, joy, awe, shame, or just suddenly being struck by the incredible beauty of the Sacrifice of the Mass.

I wept when my husband (then boyfriend) came into the Church. I made it through the Baptism, but then when we both came from receiving the Blessed Sacrament, I totally lost it! I also boo-hooed through most of our wedding! But, I am a total girly-girl who cries. 😊

Don’t be embarrassed. It’s totally OK, I mean, I try not to be disruptive or anything, but sometimes, the tears just come for any number of reasons, and there’s no stopping them, and that’s OK! There’s something happening there between you and God, and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that! 👍

It feels to me that crying is very Protestant. I know it’s probably a stereotype, but it seems that way to me. You know, they have their hands in the air, “feeling the love of God,” and they speak out in tongues. Man, I can’t even imagine going to those churches. Hmmm, another time when Borat is so relevant.

LOL, that will be me if DH is ever received into the Church! (little does he know I’ve been praying for almost 14 years! Someday :gopray: …)

Well, judging from the length of this thread, it must be a Catholic thing, too. 😉

It does happen to me, but since I was just ‘converted’ and baptised in April, I thought it was because I was new to Catholicism. I am glad I am not the only one who is :crying:

I am the same why! It moves me to feel Gods presence.

So glad I was led to this thread!

I converted in '02 and cry during Mass a lot. It used to make my hubby nuts, thinking I was upset, but I think he’s finally ok w/it. The kids just so, here she goes again…the spirit moves in me at various times at home as well, so they are used to it and just get me a kleenex.

When it happens at Mass my heart is just so full of Jesus I can’t hold all the love in and it spills out my eyes. The times vary, sometimes the Homily hits, me, another it’s music, ususally right after taking the Eucharist.

Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone…
Susan

i wonder what the male to female ratio is in this thread…

i finally understood what people meant by “crying like a leaky faucet” when i started to understand who our Blessed Lady was on my Cursillo retreat. it just came out nonstop by itself for like 15-20min and i couldn’t figure out why…

Yes. At times in my life where life has thrown me curves no mortal can resolve - I bring my troubles to God - but became embarrassed when I began weeping during Mass. Sometimes had to stop going as a result. Some are more sensitive than others - and we all know we can bring our hearts to the feet of God’s Throne - but sometimes it’s easier to go when noone but God is there - and nowadays, Churches are more often locked for security purposes than in previous years when Mass is not scheduled. It’s those quieter times when no one is there - that we feel closer to God? As if He hears us better than in a crowd?

I suggest you try attending a Life in the Spirit seminar or a Catholic Charismatic Mass (ask the Diocesean Laison in the Chancery Office). It knocked my socks off and I, a cradle Catholic, suddenly knew God’s love, I felt it, I prayed in tongues (which is not what you see on TV), I cried for hours. There is something about being open to allowing the Holy Spirit to enter your soul that is so overwhelmingly joyful, something that you cannot contain and want everyone to know. It is the love of the Trinity. God bless you and may the Holy Spirit bestow all the gifts that He has upon you–only catch is that YOU have to allow Him in. :extrahappy:

I do at virtually every Mass. When I think of the great gift of receiving Jesus daily in the Blessed Sacrament, I can’t help it.

I am very fortunate because in my Church you’d be an outcast if you didn’t cry! The Church I attend has a very special community and the warmth is over whelming at times. The first time I went I had a total flushing of emotions. The Holy Spirit is ALIVE and WELL!
