Do you ever cry during Mass?

Responding to the idea that all tears are good and true:

I lived in San Francisco in the '70’s, not far from the “People’s Temple” where Jim Jones attracted and then lured hundreds of members, whom I am sure were very emotional and full of tears, to Guyana where they all drank his poisonous Kool-Aid and died. It was this incident, as well as the warnings of my parents and their peers, who had experienced Hitler, that led me to be aware of being led by emotions. Many people have walked down the slippery slope of indulging in the wonderful feelings they felt, while blindly walking into trouble.

I do not mock feelings or tears; I have some pretty strong ones at times, thank God. It’s called being passionate but always keep an eye open around you…God gave us brains to discern and judge and learn right from wrong. In an era where everyone is so “tuned in to the spiritual”, just be sure that you know that these tears are of the Holy Spirit and not of the “evil spirits that prowl about the world for the ruin of souls”. Amen.

WE NEED TO ALLOW AND EXPRESS EMOTION BUT NOT BE RULED BY THEM ALONE. WE HAVE A BRAIN FOR A REASON.

Sometimes I’ll be moved to tears during Mass. I find it very embarrassing! :o I don’t like to let others see me cry and it ends up being distracting because once the tears start rolling I put all my effort into hiding them.

Anybody else have this happen?
Oh, my, yes! And there are various types of tears for me, also. In other words, they accompany varying states in me.

I understand completely how you feel. Give God permission to deal with you as he will. Whatever the emotion behind the tears, use it as a way to let Christ get closer to you.

Very often. I think Mass is one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed. I always get very emotional when I am involved with any beautiful thing of God’s creation. Just think, God gave us this beautiful celebration in order to get closer to HIM! :amen: I am never embarassed. I’m not afraid to let other people know that I am moved by this experience. Be not afraid.

I cry quite often, mostly because I am ashhamed of our failings as Human beings. I stand at the back of the church and if I am in particular pain it is easier to leave for a breath of air outside, without bothering others.
I am no saint! But I want to tell you, immediately, do that kind of crying outside of Church! God is a loving and forgiving God. Then, come inside Church for Mass. Come all the way up front and see what the Real Preasence is all about. Just before the Our Father, and then after. Keep your eyes focused on the Preist, Chalice and the Large Host. And the rest is up to you. Sincerely, Franny

Do I ever cry during mass? Occasionally. Yes, and like others I try to hide it. Tears come, usually during the time leading up to or just after Communion. Sometimes I wish there was not the staid and controlled atmosphere so prevalent in Catholic churches. But on the other hand I don’t think I’d feel very comfortable with all kinds of show of emotion around me during mass either. Charismatic masses are not for me, but comtemplative experience can bring me to tears at times.

Dear members, I am thinking about last summer when I decided not to hide my tears anymore. My husband & I were in a Catholic Bible study class. And at home I was reading the New Testament daily. I began imagining I was walking with Jesus. Tears began to fall during these times also. I didnt know yet what was coming over me. I had other things happen to me in the past, but now, WE began to experience “more than co-incidences”.
At one particular Mass, a Missionary Preist gave a homily that he told of a story while out in the bush of Africa. He was saying Mass every morning in a small humble parish for about 50 or so people. One morning, the preist stopped the crippled eldest man before he left. The preist said to him "Josef, I know that you walk to Mass every morning at least a mile over rough terrain. I am worried about you. If you would not come during the week, we can take the sunday Host to you. And most of all, I see that you are crying at the end of every Mass. What is wrong?
Josef replied “Father, I must recieve the Host every day. It is the Body & Blood of Christ. When I receive the Host, I feel such joy that my eyes have tears of love for Jesus. I would walk even further.”
At our Mass, the Missoinary stepped down, and walked away. My husband & I looked at each other in disbeleif & then beleif. We whispered to each other, “someone else cries when they receive communion!” It was a majical moment for me. Although I never found the visiting preist who gave the homily, it started me on a search of what is the Gift of Tears. I have every website. But more so, knowing God more deeply, following Jesus thru the Bible, & letting the Holy Spirit use me to help others.
Sincerely, Franny

Yes, I cry at Mass. I become so filled with gratitude for the gifts God gives us, especially Jesus, who will never leave us. Who Saves us every day from the bad and leads us to the Father through His Sweet Mother Mary, who prays for us and entreats us to pray for others. I cry when I realize how all the people around me in church are part of me and I am part of them, the Body of Christ, because of God’s love. I cry because I don’t deserve so much love! Now, Please excuse me, I must go find some tissues.

If prayer does not get you what you want, be happy, maybe God, who knows all, will guide you in a way that will be better for you and those whose lives you touch.

Just had to share this…

The priest was preparing the monstrance (sp?) for Eucharistic Adoration after Mass on Sunday. I am almost positive he was crying. Don’t think I’ve ever seen the priest cry before, lol…👍

Yes, it happens with me. There are certain songs that will do it to me. There have been homilies that have done it to me. There are times just looking up at the cross.

The most recent I can remember was during the reading of the Passion on Palm Sunday this year.

I am fairly certain my priest has cried before - at least his eyes have welled up with tears. Before Easter, he did a reenactment of Christ washing the feet of the disciples and he wiped his eyes after washing everyone’s feet. Could have just been sweat, but he is such a spiritual guy that I like to think it was tears.

It feels to me that crying is very Protestant. I know it’s probably a stereotype, but it seems that way to me. You know, they have their hands in the air, “feeling the love of God,” and they speak out in tongues. Man, I can’t even imagine going to those churches. Hmmm, another time when Borat is so relevant.
you’re associating good fruits of the Spirit with their rejection of the Church, which is exactly what we acuse them of. i.e. throwing the baby out with the bathwater. because they have fallen away from the Church doesn’t mean that God is not with them and makes his presence known.

what they have as you describe is very real, very beautiful, and very God-filled. it’s just they lack the Sacraments and Magisterium, which we believe is the core of the faith. should we not want all that God has to offer? i do.

if only they would come back to the fullness of the faith in the Church, it would make it that much stronger.

traditional mass + praise/worship/fellowship/community outside of mass = devastating knock out blow to evil.

I don’t mean I’m crying, rolling on the floor and moaning Jesus’ name as loud as I can. The crying is more tears welling up ini my eyes from feeling so much emotion either during the homily or after receiving the Eucharist.

You’re Catholic and yet unaware of what Catholic prayer is like – and mocking of what you are ignorant of, to boot?

Oh yes, I do. But I try my best to make it less obvious. It’s mostly the Psalm responses that make me cry.

A few Sundays ago, July 15th, my husband and I attended Mass together. We always sit in the 1st front right pew. As I mentioned before, we always liked to sit there so we could see every detail that is going on the altar. The more you see, the more your body is transformed. You are giving yourself to the Lord, body, mind, and soul. As He gave to us. We give to Him. The Holy Spirit seems to enter me with such force at different times of the Mass. On this day, the Lector never showed up. I said to my husband that I’ll go up to Read. He held my hand tight and said NO! I never did the Readings before, but I always wanted to. The Preist went over to that side & did the 1st Reading, then went back to the middle to sit down. Next, is the Responsorial Psalm. My husband had already let go of my hand. And when the Psalm was almost done, I scooted out of my pew as fast as I could, and went up to the Lector’s Stand. I looked at our Preist and He gave me a nod to begin. The 2nd Reading was St Paul to the Colossians 1:15-20. The first words out of my mouth were CHRIST JESUS IS THE IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE GOD. And the Holy Spirit used me to send the Word to about 500 people in
our Church. I didnt miss one word and I didnt have tears. I usually have tears when reading the Bible also.
When I returned to my seat, I trembled. I participated in the rest of Mass with an abundance of tears. And after receiving the Eucharist, I put my head down, my mind was brought in to a closer union with Christ. There were several minutes that I cant remember. Then my husband gave me a little push when it was time everyone sits down. I lifted my head, and realized, my face was covered with tears. I was not crying. I didnt know I had tears until I lifted my face. These are tears of overwhelming joy.
I signed up to be a Lector.
Sincerely, Franny

What a nice story. I always sit near the front - usually the second row. I want to hear and see everything and be near the priest, choir, etc.

You know I don’t have to be at mass to cry and I meen that in some of these stories I ball my eyes out just to know how many of God’s people will ring out the truth of God’s love transformed into their hearts like you have shared. I could stay on this web site all day but not appropriate. So I will just take it to God and tell Him jhow much I love Him for allowing His people the right to feel His love.
SOOOOO simple soooo so simple no arithmatic no science just only, all of, just— PURE LOVE— unadoltirated love from OUR God to HIS people.
I love it.
God bless
