Do you honestly believe in hell?

The soul is a spiritual entity, not physical, and hence, cannot be destroyed, ever.

Annihilation of the soul is a metaphysical impossibility, regardless of whatever view you hold about hell.

Ok, so you tell me where Hell is? Do you know?

How many ‘Hells’ can you think of that exist on earth? Many!! Many places of terror and turmoil. God created Earth so why not create Heaven and Hell on earth?

Why has Heaven or Hell have to be somewhere other than earth? Where does it say in the Bible where ‘Hell’ ‘actually’ is?
Neither Hell, Michigan; Hell, Norway, or Hell, Cayman Islands, is reported to be a place of afterlife punishment. :):)🙂

No place on the earth is everlasting, so the true Hell must not be earthly.

Jesus said that those who’s names are not in the Book of Life will be thrown in the Lake of fire for all eternity.
Doesn’t that prove there is a hell? I don’t have to tell you where hell is for it to be a real place.

We are not living in it now…after Jesus was tortured & crucified He never said He was in hell on earth!

When people say hell is on earth, they usually mean we are now living our hell…so there is no spiritual hell with fire after we die.

That what I thought you were saying.

There actually used to be a long-standing idea that Hell was a definitive place under the Earth. This is shown in Dante’s Inferno, where Dante (guided by Virgil) kind of just stumbles into the entrance to Hell. And Jesus did in fact compare the Ben-Hinnom Valley (Gehenna) to Hell quite often (actually calling Hell “Gehenna”).

I believe in heaven, but I don’t believe in hell. That’s just my honest belief about the matter. Of course not everyone can get into heaven, but I think those who don’t just die. They don’t go to hell, they don’t go anywhere. They literally just stop existing.

Wouldn’t a punishment for being a mortal sinner be much worse if you ended up completely dead and alone versus being with other sinners in hell? What do you guys think?
Do I believe in Hell?
:sad_yes:Yup

Judaism, which hardly discusses hell, believes that hell is separation from G-d. I think the Catholic Church shares this belief but I’m not certain whether it also believes in some form of physical torment that accompanies the separation.

Personally, I have a tough time believing in separation from G-d FOR ALL ETERNITY, let alone physical punishment FOR ALL ETERNITY. I just don’t think a G-d of such mercy would inflict (or allow) that kind of punishment, even though I realize it is not He Who directly caused it. Well, maybe the separation can occur only to the truly evil. But G-d has His own reasons which none of us can fully comprehend. We would do well to trust in His justice and mercy rather than complain or speculate too much.
I think it is incomprehensible to us mortals how a world or a universe without time would look like. As a physics major, I have learned that change is measured with respect to time. When we leave the temporal realm, change is no longer possible. Our decision to be with or without God becomes fixed.

As Hillary Clinton said, " what difference at this point does it make?"

I don’t want to go there & I’m praying & trying not to!!!

It was privately revealed to Ven. Mary of Agreda that hell is in the center of the earth, just like you believe. Her book of private revelations, The City of God, has received very high approbation and was required reading for priests before V2. It has an imprimatur. God bless you.

theologically and personally I believe in hell…but I hope nobody goes there…it is eternal suffering…and worst separation from God.

No, I don’t believe in the fire and brimstone hell that is often portrayed. I think of it more like being in a state of mind where you still have all these attachments and can’t satisfy any of them. Then again, sometimes life on earth seems like hell.

“Just dying” would be a reward, if you think about it. Hell is the eternal separation from God. **There could be no greater torment than this. **It is not something God punishes us with, but rather something that we choose by rejecting Him upon judgement. We are taught by our Catholic faith to believe that Hell exists. We are not required, however, to believe that a single soul occupies it.

Whenever I hear of someone who thinks Hell does not exist, I get a shiver down my spine. I worry for this attitude, to be very honest. I think of the Screwtape Letters, where one demon is training in a younger demon, and explains that the best way to win this battle is to convince man that demons and Hell simply do not exist. It’s a pretty effective tool. Of course, C.S. Lewis was writing fiction, but he spoke very succinctly on this theological phenomena–that is, the ability to believe in Heaven but to shun the idea of Hell. It would be like believing there is light, but denying there is darkness. How possibly can light be light if there is no darkness to contrast it to?

There is a constant warfare going on around you, around me, around everybody. The destruction and ruin of our souls is sought after by the Enemy. Christ came in order to conquer death! Conquer it! Even in the gospels, Christ descended to Hell for three days prior to his Resurrection. If anything our Church teaches is true–and I believe everything she teaches is true–then Hell is absolutely, definitely real.

Love and peace be with you, my friend!!
I think that was beautifully put.🙂

So Hell is just kind of a metaphysical state of minor discomfort? It must not be too frightening for you to consider inhabiting it for the rest of Eternity, then. As a Catholic, how does that reflect on your attitude toward sin?

Read the message of Fatima and what the children saw about hell.

I do not know. The whole after life and God judgment scares me.
Well then, your fear is good if you will take time to discover the reason you are scared. I think you are actually in a better spot than those who outright reject a belief in hell.

There has been a lot of talk recently about mercy and justice, stemming from the recent synod. I asked a question on another thread, “how did we ever get to the point where we think God’s perfect mercy is good (think of heaven) but that his perfect justice is bad (think of hell.) The poster named Ender quoted a beautiful answer from G. K. Chesterton “children are innocent and love justice; adults are wicked and prefer mercy.” Now those who consider deep things……ponder this just a bit. Do we believe God is who He has revealed Himself to be? Is He with many attributes (all of which are perfect) and is justice one of them? I personally believe those who do not believe in hell are not much in touch with their authentic inner self nor care to see what is going on in the world. Problem is, we have lost the ability to recognize sin for what it is.
