Without reading the thread, in answer to the initial question…
For abortion… no. I don’t believe voting someone pro life will actually work. Abortion is a state issue here and we’ve had “pro-life” governments with extreme majorities who haven’t even discussed it, much less done anything to change the law. All talk and no action. It’s a “we won’t do anything, but they might if you vote for them”… that’s bad politics and it won’t get my vote. If they showed they actually wanted to do something, then I would support them.
Same sex marriage… I’m undecided on that one. It isn’t the political issue here that it is the US and so far hasn’t come up as something I need to make a call on. I do see it as inevitable given the beliefs held in Australia, which tempts me to vote as I usually do. I’ll admit that is for the major party more likely to bring in gay marriage. It would be very hard for me to vote for the other major party given I disagree with them on practically everything else. Do I vote to prevent gay marriage temporarily, knowing that doing so may have major long term impact on other issues I also consider extremely important? I’m not sure I am willing to sacrifice our health care system to prevent gay marriage unless I thought there was a long term benefit to doing so. If I thought that in addition to preventing gay marriage they were also going to prevent things such as access to IVF and sperm/egg donor-ship for LGBT couples then I’d be much more likely to change my vote. At the moment they have access to IVF and are under the same laws for sperm/egg donor-ship as straight couples. Thankfully, surrogacy isn’t so easy in Australia, so that isn’t a huge issue for me.
