Do you know people who pray in tongues?

From another thread:

Remember Jesus’ triumphal entry to Jerusalem atop
the donkey and the disciples singing and shouting loudly? Remember the
Pharisees admonishing our Lord to quiet them down? “If they should hold
their peace, these very stones should cry out” was our Lord’s response.
Those stones would cry out by the power of the Holy Spirit, right?

OK, bear with me here. The Catholic Church, in modern, western times,
has either lost, or neglected the presence and the charisms of the Holy
Spirit. Let’s not lay blame, but just note the fact. It became a
formal, institutional, regimented Church.

The Holy Spirit will not be contained or neglected, and so spoke out
via the only other Christian body: the Protestant/Pentecostals.

In reviving the Charisms, the Catholic Church is only re-taking possession
of that which was hers from the beginning. The Charismatic movement is not
protestant! It is rightly Catholic and time for it to return home. Is it everyone’s
particular spirituality?

No.

But, for those who benefit from it, we all benefit directly or indirectly.
Are there poor practitioners of it? Of course! Name a single aspect of the
Church that does not suffer from this exact failing.

True. But, proof of what? Proof texting is superfluous, but here you go:
I hardly think the using the bible as a basis for our understanding is superfluous… Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 14:14-19 are more than enough for me on this topic. I do recognize and respect your right to ‘pray in tongues’. I hope it is fruitful for you and that those you are praying with understand you and can say amen.

Well stated –

I agree with respect to most charisms, but not ‘tongues’.

The CC understanding, or at least what seems to be commonly practiced, mirrors that of Pentecostal tongues. What people are doing today is just not evidenced in the Bible; “tongues” as they are ‘spoken’ today originated with the Pentecostalism in the early 1900’s. In this respect, CC’s are borrowing/mirroring the modern Pentecostal view and practice of tongues; i.e. as a ‘prayer language’ or, if used publicly, with ‘interpretation’.

Yes, the charisms may have been the church’s all along, but the way modern “tongues” are being practiced dates no earlier than about 1900, Biblically ‘evidenced’ by a reading into scripture by Pentecostals something that was never there to begin with.

As I have mentioned, I DO NOT pray in tongues. Not my charism. However, both bible and Church defend the charism of tongues - which manifests itself differently, even according to Saint Paul.

While I cannot disagree with this totally, because obviously there is a move of the Holy Spirit in the twentieth century in a big way which has its cause-effect, I am wary of over defining it into specific details. We cannot totally describe the action of the Holy Spirit. At best it is just reasonable speculation. We cannot understand everything about God. Some of them are always remain a mystery. If we do, invariably we could be wrong when new things/phenomena of the Holy Spirit happen. Experience can never be described fully at the expense of being semantic and legalism. Sometimes what we know is just its essence.

What is important is that the Holy Spirit is at work (as Jesus promised).

Except for a forum like this, gift of tongue is not discussed much in the practicing communities. Not all have the gift and those who have, do not make a big deal of it. The gift, like all gifts of the Holy Spirit, equips us to serve. In order to do that, invariably we need to up-build ourselves. When we serve the Lord, the Lord will equip us for the task.

Thus it is so humbling, people do not want to highlight it lest it will seem like a boast.

We should not refuse the gift of tongue if it comes, not because of anything but because it can be the door for other gifts. God uses us if we allow Him. How He does that, it is really His prerogative. We just need to believe and to have expectant faith.

God bless.

Religion is man made. Period.
God is God God can chose what gifts he gives to whom through the Holy Spirit.
As the word of James 3 train your tongue
James 1 do not be deceieved ~ all good giving every perfect gift is above.
Verse 26 if anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart his religion is vain.

This line of threads is not of The Holy Spirit. It is of mans opinions Not Gods words.
Peace and blessing be upon you . I leave you in peace. Good bye

Why not just skip this thread - as I do with dozens of threads each day?

Now, more on point, from the February 1st reflection from Meditations with the Holy Spirit:
Numbers 11:29
But Moses answered him, “Are you jealous for my sake? If only all the people of the LORD were prophets! If only the LORD would bestow his spirit on them!”

Reflection: When Moses chose the 72 elders of Israel so that he might share his authority with them, two of them received the gift in the camp. Rather than object to this, Moses spoke of how he wished that that all would receive that gift.

Do I rejoice when others receive gifts from the Holy Spirit as much as I do when I receive those gifts?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, descend upon all Your people and share Your many gifts with them. Amen.

I think it is legitimately interesting that people CANNOT agree to disagree on a fringe topic.

Honestly, I have never met a Charismatic practitioner who is willing to take a detached, historical, look at the phenomena. Perhaps we converts who had to do much research, study and soul searching are more likely to take a “let me see what history says” look before we leap?

So far the discussion has been focused on speaking, not interpreting.

From what I’ve seen, at least on-line anyway, the CC use of tongues seems to be more focused on “prayer language” as opposed to someone speaking in a public setting followed by an ‘interpretation’.

Is it correct to assume that there’s not much of the latter in the CC tradition?? i.e. the CC tradition focuses more on private prayer language.

The Catechism teaches that any and all manifestations of the HS found in other ecclesial communities have their origin and root in the CC.

reclaim |riˈklām|
verb [ with obj. ]
1 retrieve or recover (something previously lost, given, or paid); obtain the return of: he returned three years later to reclaim his title as director of advertising | when Dennis emerged I reclaimed my room.
• redeem (someone) from a state of vice; reform: societies for reclaiming beggars and prostitutes.
• archaic tame or civilize (an animal or person).

You are the disagreeing one. You call it “fringe” which is demeaning, disparaging, pejorative, marginalizing language.

If you would devote 10% of the energy to understanding as you do opposing, you might not think it is on the fringe.

You have read the testimony of the good it does, yet still disagree and seem to look down on it. That is something to ponder.

Sorry, let’s use a different word.

“Non-essential and minority” activity.

And I wasn’t calling out people who did it. I wasn’t calling out people who did not do it.

I am saying: why should anyone insist either way?

PS since I am neutral on it, I have spent significantly more cognitive ability understanding than disagreeing, and I am actually fairly well educated on the subject.

More serious question.

"Do you think that the current practice of tongues is not
  1. a minority activity or
  2. a nonessential activity?"

Because that is all I am saying.

Someone thinks it is legit. Good for him. Someone does not. Good for him.

Why should we get so into converting other people to our approach over this thing? Why should we get so worked up that we accuse people who DO NOT EVEN DISAGREE NECESSARILY of hating God?

819 "Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth"273 are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: "the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements."274 Christ’s Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him,275 and are in themselves calls to "Catholic unity."276 Catechism of the Catholic Church - PART 1 SECTION 2 CHAPTER 3 ARTICLE 9 PARAGRAPH 3
