Do you know people who pray in tongues?

"Do you think that the current practice of tongues is not

a minority activity or
a nonessential activity?"
I do think it is an activity experienced by a minority of Catholics. I would also agree that it is not required for salvation. It is important for those of us who practice it, and I would never consider any gift of the HS “nonessential”. Neither of these makes it “fringe”.

Okay, so you agree that it is not necessary for salvation then. You agree it is a minority activity. I guess we just have different definitions of “fringe,” which is fine.

You and I agree. People who do it, don’t need to be beaten over the head to make them stop. People who think what the charismatics do in church today is not what the apostles did can think that too.

many elements of sanctification and of truth
The phrase is “many” .

You claimed earlier that
The Catechism teaches that any and all manifestations of the HS found in other ecclesial communities have their origin and root in the CC.

If any and all manifestations, then, the ultimate Charismatics who drink poison and handle rattlesnakes are a-okay!

We would not consider those to be manifestations of the Holy Spirit.
…visible elements. Christ’s Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church.
Authentic action of the HS, even outside the boundaries of the visible CC, are derived from the HS given to the CC.

Why not?

The same Scripture that has one verse about “groanings” has Mark 16:18.

As below, that troublesome verse in the Gospel of Mark would beg the question.

So far the discussion has been focused on speaking, not interpreting.

From what I’ve seen, at least on-line anyway, the CC use of tongues seems to be more focused on “prayer language” as opposed to someone speaking in a public setting followed by an ‘interpretation’.

Is it correct to assume that there’s not much of the latter in the CC tradition?? i.e. the CC tradition focuses more on private prayer language.
From what we see, that seems to be the case. Praying in tongue is more common, which manifests in charismatic gatherings, in praise and worship, in private prayers and ministries.

Speaking in tongue (prophecy) and interpretation is less common. I can say it is rare but then again depends on the regions and localities, remembering that Catholicism is world wide. So, yes, where the communities have this charism, it will be exercised in their gatherings. One person speaks in tongue, another interprets it, in public gathering.

And if I may add - without being accused of envying, hating God,or being possessed - this seems to be where the logic should be.

Whether the early church did this specific activity. And whether this specific activity is what is indicated by the Bible, as it has been read by the historical interpretative tradition of the Church.

So long as we are determining that in our private judgment, we are on goog grounds.

More serious question.

"Do you think that the current practice of tongues is not
  1. a minority activity or
  2. a nonessential activity?"
Forgive for interjecting, or if I am wrong as I did not follow the conversation.

The gift of tongue is not a non-essential and unnecessary in a practicing communities that has this gift. Have to make that clear.

It is exercised as and when necessary in their gatherings. Since it is a gift of the Holy Spirit, using it will upbuild them, depends on the purpose of the gift.

It is not for showing off, or to show that one is more holy. That issue should not arise at all.

Not sure what you mean by minority activity. If it is done during the praise and worship, then it is in the activity of the whole gathering, even if a few people do actually pray or sing in tongue.

God bless.

Yeah, in context we have people making some pretty nasty accusations at each other over this, and I am saying, “this is not necessary so why try to insist every one agree with you?”

And by minority I mean most Catholics both now and historically will never experience it.

If people wanna do that, that is fine. I am just against insisting on it.

Minority in the sense that fewer Catholics do it than don’t do it? Sure.
Nonessential? Individual Catholics can be saved with praying in tongues. That does not mean it’s nonessential for the Church as a whole. God gave us this gift. Therefore it has value.

Sure, you can assert that. But if someone disagrees, do you say that people are of weak faith for disagreeing? Do you blame the devil for their doubt? Or do you accept that a “live-and-let-live” attitude on this is good?

Again, just to mention this again. In the Catholic Church, the Charismatic Renewal is a spirituality, just like Marian devotion is a spirituality.

A spirituality is a type or tradition of prayers that people often used in their spiritual life. As such, people who prefer a particular spirituality, in this case, Charismatic Renewal, will come together as a group or community, in the parish, to live out the spirituality in their lives.

There are many such different groups in the parish, depends on its size.

Some parishes have big charismatic group, some small, some do not have at all.

Nobody is forced to practice this spirituality, much less to believe in it.

There is of course unreasonable attack on the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, usually by people from outside of this spirituality or those who do not know about what it is all about or just people who have a thing with Protestantism which they associate the Catholic Charismatic with. These are all unjust objection of course.

It can be true people think that the Charismatics think that they are more holy or more Spirit filled and probably they do brag and boast in the church, which made them a point of dislike for the others. These of course, are not the fruits if the Holy Spirit.

Generally the Charismatics are just renewed Catholics in their faith who find renewed vigor in their faith and who want to serve God and the Church.

God bless.

Assuming this is addressed to me:
No. I do not say those who disagree are of weak faith.
No. I do not blame the devil for their doubt.
Live and let live? I would say believe and let believe.

Sorry, I think you lost me here. What verses? What was the question?
I am just against insisting on it.
That would be an heretical position.

1Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. …11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. …12Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body…27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28And God has placed in the church …different kinds of tongues. Do all speak in tongues…? I Cor 12

No, but if someone denies that there is such an authentic gift of the HS I say they are contradicting the Church.
Do you blame the devil for their doubt?
It sounds like you have been the victim of religious abuse, and have been hurt by Christians espousing heretical ideas.

if someone denies that there is such an authentic gift of the HS I say they are contradicting the Church.
So, in your eyes, can you be a Catholic in good standing and assert that “The gift of tongues discussed in the Bible is different from the gift of tongues as practiced in charismatic circles today.”

Because if not, then this is more evidence for the idea that people really do not believe this is a matter of private discernment.

It is no language - that passage from Romans has absolutely nothing to do with “tongues” or even language for that mater. It’s not a passage that even deals with spiritual gifts.
