Do you think Abp. Milingo's recent actions could result in a "major schism"?

I know winter is approaching, and the nuts are falling from the trees, but this becoming a major schism? Doubtful; it’s all just way too kookey. Even those who seriously favour a change in the discipline of celibacy are unlikely to rally around this guy. And most of the folks who have thrown in their lot with him had already committed act that incurred excommunication.

Blessings,

Gerry

I’m sorry, there is no such thing as a minor schism.

Schism is schism…you can’t treat them differently.

I think it could cause a rift. I also think that the Vatican did a courageous thing by geting rid of Milingo.

I can only hope this doesnt lead to anything major, but seeing as he has ties to the Unification Church, i really dont see any Catholics, pro-clerical celibacy or anti-clerical celibacy going and following this guy…

I don’t think so. This guy has chosen to become irrelevant and, at best, a footnote in a history text. What a tragic, pathetic end for a priest of Jesus Christ.

Given Milingo’s purportedly bizarre beliefs about evil spirits, and his affiliation with Rev. Sun Moon, I don’t think many liberals would want anything to do with him.

This is true. All schism is by it’s nature sinful.

Numerically serious? I doubt it. Numerically, the SSPX schism isn’t “serious.” They still need to come back, as does Milingo, Stallings, et al, they still need to be found, because our God is the God who leaves the 99 safe in the fold and goes in search of the single lost sheep.

I agree. Every large religious, scholastic, governmental or professional group has eccentrics who flaunt rules and make a few waves. Abp. Milingo’s actions were enough to make a juicy little tidbit for a slow news day. If he were in some other profession he would be written off as a garden variety nut.
