Ok…no problem… mercygate. You should also post that lieing on this forum is not permitted. Not only is it a sin but deceitful. I hope you will consider that to post to that individual. Waiting for your reply
You have no evidence that anyone ever lied to you. To accuse someone of a sin without any evidence is called “calumny” and it, too, is a sin.

You know Impalass, you’ve already called everyone here on this forum a liar. I have to think that you really have some kind of mental illness. You sound like a fool and an ignorant person. You are here to instigate and nothing more. I laugh at all of your ridiculous posts.
I just cannot believe that people are still replying to you.
You are not a Catholic, you are here in disguise. We have you figured out.
People, I wouldn’t respond to his lies any more.

I do believe that with so many priests struggling with their vocation celibacy/sex abuse scandal etc the pope should be a little more sympathetic and personal and try and find out the root cause of the discention rather then slamming his fist down and just saying “do what I say” that only brings more discention. All I am doing is passing on information that there are more catholic priests in the USA that want celibacy abolished then priests who don’t and the numbers are rising every year. This is not my information. The information I state is easily attainable. The real question on this forum should be “why do more then half of all catholic priests in the USA want celibacy relaxed/abolished” or why are over 65% of catholic laity in favour of making celibacy optional:…they would be the better questions.
Code:
If the pope stands tuff on this issue so be it. Devout Catholics shouldn't complain that the number of priests are diminishing quickly. If they do then something should have to be done. If you have to drive 50 miles to a church with a priest then so be it. You can't have it both ways.
I think part of the problem of declining vocations in all areas is simply modern society. We have become a “if it feels good, do it” and “whatever it takes to make ME happy” society. We can’t even have a toothpaste or car ad on TV without making it sexual. Many of our children look up to the Britney Spears and the blig-wearing, smack-talking pro athletes of the world as role models. Everything immoral is supposed to be accepted in the name of political correctness, free speech, or basic rights. We don’t know where to draw the line anymore. I think saying that’s its celibacy is way oversimplying the whole situation.

“My cousin is a priest and he thinks you are a wacko” What does your cousin say about half the priests that want celibacy abolished? Are they all wackos? Tell your cousin to post here.

But you know what I believe you made this story up. A big LIE! Whats your cousins name? What parish is he at? What city? Waiting for your reply. A LIE from a devout catholic. Hipocracy at its best! Waiting for your reply…
CATHDEFENDER…your cousin is right.

However gratifying it may be, I think we should stop this disgraceful and embarrassing diagnosing of one another as whackos and mentally ill, stop calling one another liars and hypocrites, and return to addressing the subject, which, to my mind, has been slaughtered, skinned, dressed, boned, roasted and eaten.

So you did lie to everyone that reads your post. Your cousin did not make that statement as you referred to.

Why are you on this forum lieing to everyone? I just give out factual statistical information that is obvious most don’t want to believe. Thats too bad! A catholic on this catholic forum lieing. If the pope knew this you would be in BIG TROUBLE! I would be scared if I was you! Gods watching your every word!
Impalass, slow down and READ the posts…It was another poster whose cousin is still living that made that statement.

I think diocesan priest should be allowed to marry.
Religuous orders should remanin celibate.

faithful Catholics, Why Do You Feel You Must Answer This So-called Impall-***

I sometimes talk down about the pope and vatican (many call him the rottweiler) because the pope acts like a union boss out of the 1940s. Do as I say attitude!. I don’t like it when someone or people are intimidated. Your boss at work wouldn’t talk like that to his employees or he wouldn’t last long. He is just like the priests and nuns I had growing up that instilled fear into you. Just believe it they would scream. Well, that never worked I learned quickly. I am sure there are a lot of priests that lack maturity and fear the vatican/pope. Thats sad.
You are certainly reaching here…you have no idea how the Pope speaks to people privately. Since you like facts so much I am surprised you also keep bringing up the sexual abuse scandal which cannot be tied to celibacy.

Catholic disciplines and doctrines are not determined by polls. If you want a religion that determines its doctrines and disciplines by public opinion and “modern morals”, you should go join the Episcopal church. They have married priests, women priests, Muslim women priests, openly gay bishops with live-in lovers, all the stuff you would love.

Go for it and good luck.
The same poll showed that only 15% of Priests would wed if given the chance. As the custom with most in CAF when i quote a poll I igive a link.

Um…from that article…
A 74% majority of priests and 70% of nuns approve of the way John Paul is handling his duties as Pope.
When was this poll taken?
Also, it says this…Results to polls can also be affected by other factors such as question wording and the reluctance of some respondents to participate in surveys.
Overall though, it certainly disagrees with what some were saying on here, doesn’t it?

Would you do EVERYTHING the pope would command you to do? Waiting for your reply.
You cap the word EVERYTHING as if the Holy Father would ask someone to do something immoral or harmfull or even unethical. Besides, he doesn’t command. Why don’t you pull your horns in?

The canonical requirement of celibacy for priests in the Western Church is not forced upon anyone. In a proper sense, priests are men who freely choose celibacy “for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.” After all, it is the vow or promise of celibacy that comes first, not ordination.
The Eastern churches have a different canonical custom that allows married men to be ordained to the priesthood, but once they are ordained they may not marry, even in the event of the death of the spouse. Still, many candidates for the priesthood in the East freely choose celibacy. All bishops in the East are consecrated from the ranks of the monks, who are all celibate. The harmoniously different canonical customs of both East and West not only show a deep interconnection between celibacy and the priesthood, they also bear witness to the great freedom of celibacy.

In light of this, doing away with the canonical discipline of priestly celibacy in the West would not solve the problem of the shortage of priests. In the Eastern church, where married men are accepted as priests, there are shortages. Furthermore, doing away with the canonical discipline of priestly celibacy would involve the additional problem of divorced priests. Unfortunately, this is something not unknown in Protestant churches with their married ministers.

The priest shortage is a problem of faith, not a result of the discipline of celibacy. These faith problems manifest themselves in the serious misunderstanding of the truth and meaning of human sexuality and, consequently, a serious drop in the world’s birthrates because of contraception, sterilization, and abortion. When human sexuality is not properly understood in its totality of the gift of oneself, celibacy is also misunderstood. In light of today’s severe crisis in the area of sexuality, we need the witness of celibacy all the more.

For the record, I do NOT believe priests should be allowed to Marry in most circumstances, but I strongly believe that married men should be allowed to be ordained.
Yerusalym, Yes Peter was married before Christ made him a apostle. But think about it after Peter started the RCC. Now after Peter started the RCC now then it seems that Priests made the choice to follow CHrist. Thats when they no longer got married right, I dont recall any Popes ever being married, I can be mistaken
i really never checked into it but i will. But remember the Pope and Roman Catholic Priests have never been married as far as I know. Now of course ROman Catholic has many differences then just Catholic. You must remember that. And as far as our Pope he isnt doing anything any different then John Paul ll Its just he is not as gentle as John Paul. John Paul had a softer side to him at dealing with people. Our new Pope tells it like it is, he a shape up or ship out kinda guy. Hes not pulling any punches. I think thats why People misread alot of John Paul, he was more understanding sometimes. this one isnt, its his church and hes going to run it, and thats it. As much as i love John Paul maybe we need Pope Benedicts firmness. Then we will get the point. No one is going to push or change that man, If you ever get a chance read his book Jesus of Nazareth, amazing. just unreal the understanding of the faith this man has. I shouldnt say an understanding because that comes from the HS its his way of explaining it to us. He is a wonderful teacher.
Rinnie,

There were married Popes other than Peter, and married men being ordained was the norm for the first 600 years or so and it didn’t become universally required in the Latin Rite until the 12th Century.

Here’s something I’m not sure you’re grasping, the Catholic Church is made of of several (26?) different Rites…all of which are faithful to and obedient to Rome and the Pope…the Latin Rite of that Church is what most in this forum belong to. Of those Rites I’m unaware of any others that require celibacy for ordination, and I’m certain several of them ordain married men. So, when you say Roman Catholic priests aren’t married, you’re incorrect…because all these other Rites are also Roman Catholic, but not of the Latin Rite

Here’s the other thing I think some aren’t grasping…the matter of celibacy is not DOCTRINE, it’s DISCIPLINE…the Pope could begin allowing the ordination of married men Tomorrow. Celibacy for ordination is NOT a divine mandate.
ALHERS WROTE: Plus from what I understand, most Jewish men were Married back then and a lot of them did have celibate Marriages too.
One other thing, remember when Peter’s MIL was ill and afterwards, when she was healed she got up and waited on them?
The women didn’t get upset that the men were following Jesus and doing His will, they also did. As I already explained my position in earlier posts, I won’t bother to go into all of that again
.

Yes, most Jewish men were married, but with VERY FEW exceptions a celibate marriage for a Jew was unheard of…why? The whole reason Jews married was because it was a RELIGIOUS MANDATE…they take seriously the commandment BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY. There is some historical arguement as to whether the Essenes were celibate, but I doubt it from my historical reading. FOLLOWING JESUS AND DOING HIS WILL DOES NOT REQUIRE CELEBACY and Christ never asked this of anyone.

Priests were allowed to marry up until the 12 century. 39 popes of the past were married and fathered many children. It was ok then but not now…does that make sense? Not at all.
It does if you believe that the Pope is led by the Holy Spirit. If you believe what Jesus said when he said I will give you the words, then you will believe that he gives the Pope the words, to make these decisions. If you dont believe that the Pope isnt led by Christ himself, then no, you believe whatever you want. I have come to see that when Jesus said only few will truely believe, its fewer and fewer than i every could believe. My faith in the Roman Catholic Church is unquestionable. My faith in the Pope in truely unquestionable. Where does that come from. it cant come because i was raised that way, look how many other people were and turned their back on the RCC. I am learning more and more this had to be a gift from Jesus Christ himself. Can anyone else swear that they believe 100% in their church and religion and have not one percent of doubt. I swear to you I do. Forgive me but to me if you question the Pope you question God. Thats just what my heart truely says. Even if i dont understand alot and believe me I dont, I know God is leading the Pope and he has his own reasons why he does what he does. ANd those reasons only GOd himself knows. Do you believe that GOd speaks directly to the Pope? Where does this Faith come from, to be so strong it has to come from God. WHy would i lie to you about this. There is no motive, if you go to the RCC or not, it doesnt change my life, because the RCC will never fail. Jesus promised us that. And look its the oldest and still here. People try to break it down every day and its going to get stronger, it already is. Just wait and see. More and more are comming back home.
