Do you think priests should be allowed to marry?

I know from experience that there are un-natural aspects to celibacy…God gave everyone a sexual nature… and i believe it is wrong to thwart that nature for too many years, “forever”…
Could you be specific about the un-naturalness you have in mind, and what you mean by “thwart”?

No, I don’t think priests should be able to marry… but I would not have a problem if married men became priests. But it would be strange if their wives or children helped to celebrate the mass, as I once saw in a Lutheran (I think) church.
I know a very old priest who is the grandfather of a large family, who became a priest several years after his wife died. He is a very happy person, with family (church members and actual family) around him all the time. I think that no one should be deprived of the great joy of having a real family.
But again, no dating priests. that’s just weird 👍

((What amazes me is how people take a couple of sentences out of a article and then try to say what someone else was saying when they didn’t read the complete thing to begin with.)
Ya… Horrible… !!

So am I going to hell now distracted? Because if you say that I am, you are not to far behind.
So you are putting words into my mouth, Cathdefender??

Just wanted you to know that Scripture, if you didn’t already… Seemed you didn’t…

Just trying to save your soul… 😃

You need to read the whole article then. He never said it could not be lived, as a matter of fact he said he has indeed lived it his entire life. It is not abnormal either.
Fr. Groeschell is, apparently, a virgin…

You can’t want what you have never had… I am mostly addressing the issue of celibacy for those priests who are NOT virgins…

;3765751]please forgive me for having the audacity to disagree with a well-known priest, but i do not think Jesus ever asked us to leave our spouses and children, literally, to follow Him… (though there may be unique, rare circumstances where that may be “ethical”?? like when one spouse rejects the other or what have you…)… I belive what He meant was that we are to put family AFTER Jesus. Fr. Groeschel seems to say we should actually leave them…

I did not, admittedly, read the entire article. right now, i don’t have time… but since i didn’t like the 1st part… well… maybe later…

My response to you distracted:
Your time on here would have been better spent if you HAD read the article.

Thank you distracted, because he who casts the first stone. I think Jesus has the final say on my soul. (Hope he is an extremely forgiving God).😦

(# 3 is a good example) that you yourself posted in another thread. What happened to this attitude of yours?? (your words-'I think you should celebrate your virginity… and being alone is good because you can get closer to Jesus"…

No contradiction occurs here, which i assume is what you are saying…

the only thing i regret doing is … i didn’t somehow mention in the title of the Thread that i was NOT referring to virgin priests… I am referring to those who are either non- virgins (and struggle with their sexuality/celibacy)… and/or those who are interested in marrying a particular woman…

Which brings me to ask this question, if God said he would forgive 70X7, aren’t our numbers up considering that equals out to just 490 times? I am way over due.😃

you can’t want what you have never had?
try telling that to a woman who longs for a baby
perhaps a good confession is in order for you distracted, as surely you do seem to be very distracted.

i’ve said this numerous times before, but this forum makes it kind of difficult to understand and be understood… Written words are not comparable to speaking and seeing a person’s gestures, etc…

I meant no offense… but i guess i could hv worded things a little better…

Sorry…

What does confession have to do with being “distracted”?? And how do you presume to know the state of my soul? Oh, OK, i know… i had the audacity to question some Posters’’ long-held beliefs…

No, i don’t think i really need a confession… haven’t committed any mortal sins (except maybe the aforementioned??)

No, waht i actually need is…

sex

😃

First of all, their time in formation, I am sure, is when they ought to be able to deceide this. With lots of prayer (discernment) they surely ought to have known long before they take their vow of celibacy if this is what they believe they have been given the grace to do or not.
If they are interested in marrying a particular person, then it doesn’t sound like they are called to the Vocation of the Priesthood but rather the Vocation of Marriage, (but then I am speaking of those who are Roman Catholic, Latin Rite Priest) since we seem to have to be specific about everything.

Am i sorry i am celibate? Not entirely. Though i have been celibate for many yrs… it has only been in the last 3 or 4 that i have begun to feel, somewhat strongly, that i do not want to live this way any more. Therefore, i feel that i, of all (or most ) of the posters here, am in a position to understand what priests must go throuhg… God gave everyone a sexual nature… and i believe it is wrong to thwart that nature for too many years, “forever”… Abstinance is good for sometimes even long periods of time… it is good and even necessary… but… after awhile, in some situaations, it can come to the point where… well,
I don’t mean to sound too harsh but I would just venture to say that you may be celibate but you are obviously not in the same place spiritually and filled with the same devotion, and same purpose for it, as a priest. Therein lies all the difference in the world. Don’t place your own failings on them.

See what I mean, what ever happened to your Holy Hour before the Lord?

have you noticed how many times you use the word “they” and “them”?? Why do you speak for people who live in ways you do not? Why do you speak for others? Should we not all live our own lives and let others worry about theirs, particularly when you are advocating changes or lack thereof that can make “them” unhappy?? Like i said, i feel that only those who have been celibate for a very long time should be speaking on this subject… How long have you been celibate??
If they are interested in marrying a particular person, then it doesn’t sound like they are called to the Vocation of the Priesthood but rather the Vocation of Marriage,
So if they don’t know anyone they would be interested in marrying, that means they can swear off such a thing for the rest of their lives??

Maybe knowing this kind of stuff will make us love Jesus more and focus less on “human goodness.” (no such thing… without Him)
What??? Not the point I was making at all. My point was that no one is denying that all popes were perfect.

See what I mean, what ever happened to your Holy Hour before the Lord?
why do you presume anything happened to it??

Just because i have a healthy desire for sex??

And who invented sex… Hmmmm???

😃

If one is celibate and not wanting to be, totally not wanting to be, is miserable because he wants to marry… how is that self-giving?? You can’t love others unless you love yourself…
What part of this do you not understand?
One does not HAVE to be a priest if one feels that his calling is the sacrament of marriage.
