Do you truly believe in God's unconditional love for you?

That’s beside the point. Unconditional love is accepting someone even when they hate you. That’s the unconditional part. Anyway, I don’t want to hog the thread. But that’s how I feel on it.

I don’t doubt for a second that God loves me unconditionally, but where did I get that idea? I wonder if my understanding originates from my experience of the love which my parents have for me. Their love has plenty of small imperfections, but it has always been there. It is a solid, indestructible, immovable reality. They don’t talk about it. They just show it, and I just know it.

As I get older, I have come to see God’s love revealed also in the Bible, in the Church with its sacraments, saints, liturgy, Tradition, and teachings, in the world, nature, the universe, and all creation, and in the good things in my life. That’s a lot of love.

Where does one find trust in God’s love?
By the loving God unconditionally, as we are exhorted by Pope Francis to do. This is different then presumption that proceeds from pride and is a sin against the virtue of Hope.

It is far easier to believe if one accepts that our ultimate, eternal good may not be related to temporal relief. It is far easier to accept if one ponders Tobit 12:13 (Vulgate)
“Because you were acceptable to God, it was necessary that testing should prove you.”
Testing because we are acceptable. What greater comfort can there be? No testing, no love.

We’re not supposed to worry…but how can I not worry about getting fired? About having enough backup funds to take care of my aging parents.

God just seems angry and upset with me all the time
To the extent that you have negative stuff, such as job problems, going on in your daily life, God isn’t “zapping” you with those out of anger or upset or anything else. They’re happening because of some earthly cause, whether it’s an economic problem at your employer that is causing them to downsize, or some ability in yourself that you need to develop, or a mismatch between your skills and the job/ the boss/ etc.

Try thinking of them as challenges that are happening in your earthly life apart from God. Look at practical ways you yourself can address the issues. Ask God for his help and insight to overcome the challenges. Ask him to work with you to overcome them.

I’ve had my times when I felt God didn’t love me, but it was more because I just felt like a piece of junk, self-esteem wise, for some reason. When stuff was not going well for me at my workplace or in my personal life, it never occurred to me to blame God and say, “God is doing this to me” or “God is not helping me”. My response is generally to try to see from a practical standpoint what is going wrong and what I can do to fix it. For example: look for a new job assignment or a new employer, break off with the person who is constantly causing drama in my life, go back to school for more or different training, change the way I am approaching my work, etc. If you are doing something to try to help yourself then God will work with you on that. Also when God closes a door, He generally opens a window to some other path which in my case has usually been better - for example, laid off from a job I didn’t like, I got a new better one, though it took a while.

I don’t think it’s a helpful mindset to relate your practical challenges, like work, to your “sins” and relate all this back to God. When you’re a baby learning to walk, you fall down because you’re still developing your skill of walking. You don’t fall down because God doesn’t love you or because you sinned. If the baby next door is walking at an earlier age than you, it doesn’t mean God loves the next-door baby more. It just means you take a little longer learning to walk. The same for every practical challenge in life.

Instead of blaming God, ask Him to help give you insight as to how you can address whatever issues you have with your work, co-workers, anxiety over caring for your parents, and any other challenge. Say, “God, I’d like to better meet this challenge, help me go about it” and then take whatever practical steps you need to take to address the problem.

Hello.

I struggle with this too. It helps to remember all the times in my life that things worked out, especially the things that weren’t immediate, but took time. God’s scheduling is perfect, mine is not.

I don’t know why it’s difficult for you to believe fully with your heart. Sounds like a good thing to bring up when you’re having a talk with God. Keep discussing this with Him until you get an answer.

Please pray for me.

Hello.

As I understand it, Jesus earned Heaven for us, we are incapable of “earning” it on our own.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I don’t believe it, I know it to be the case.

Although I am logically able to understand this question obviously, doubting it is not my personal experience. How does anyone doubt facts coherently. So it still seems a little bizarre to me I suppose.

I, unlike most, wouldn’t see my belief as ‘faith’ however. Faith implies a leap of uncertainty of which I have none at all. Making it hard for me to
answer in the negative anyway 🙈

Except I’m not talking about good in the traditional problem of evil.

This is about love. We’re not talking about a punishment meant for correction. There is no correction out of hell. We’re not talking about a spanking, or cutting off a druggie child. That’s all meant to change behavior.

We’re talking about pure revenge. Punishment without end. That isn’t love in any book I can agree with
God bless you Rhubarb and God bless every readers of the CAF.
.

We are not created ourselves, God created us and God unconditionally loves us, and it is His responsibility to take care of His creations.
.

If a creator creates a creation and the creation happen to be a junk, who is responsible his junk creation? – Certainly NOT THE JUNK CREATION.
.

Someone may say; God created us with free will and we made ourselves junks with our free will.
.
Nice try, but it is a flawed try, because if a creation created with free will with an equal brain/knowledge that creation would never become a junk.
.
It doesn’t matter how we cut it, according to His Eternal Design/Plan, God created Adam and Eve to “fall.”
.

If God would choose to, He could create Adam and Eve not just only free will with an inferior brain/knowledge, but with an equal brain/knowledge which could resist the temptation and as the result they would never “fall,” in the same way as in heaven will no one “fall.”
.
God created Adam and Eve to “fall” for the BENEFIT of the whole human race as 412 explains it.
.
CCC 412; But why did God not prevent the first man from sinning? St. Leo the Great responds, "Christ’s inexpressible grace gave us blessings better than those the demon’s envy had taken away."307 And St. Thomas Aquinas wrote, "There is nothing to prevent human nature’s being raised up to something greater, even after sin; God permits evil in order to draw forth some greater good.
Thus St. Paul says, ‘Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more’; and the Exsultet sings, ‘O happy fault,. . . which gained for us so great a Redeemer!’"308
.
.

You said Rhubarb in your post # 38:
But unconditional love means unconditional. Without condition. Which means you’re obliged to say that he lovingly stands by as we throw ourselves into the fire?
.

In my opinion;
We all can be sure, at our recreation God does NOT makes us “junk” again (by the “fall” we have been born “junks”), and He does not let us throw ourselves into the fire, because at our recreation He gives us our free will with equal corresponding brain/knowledge.
.

At our first creation for OUR BENEFIT God created us “junks,” for our tribulations which we ALL have, at our recreation God recreates us perfect for our happiness and heavenly glory which we will ALL have.
.

God bless you Rhubarb and God bless every readers of the CAF.

God’s got everything to do with it. I can’t take credit for the faith that I have. Frankly, I praise God that He let you fall into despair because you are now understanding the fact that you can’t do it on your own. He is breaking the shackles of your ego that have imprisoned you for far too long. You have to call out to God as an absolutely helpless and guilty individual. I hope that this season of despair is the beginning of a new life in Christ that is waiting for you.
100% correct. I went through the same thing the past two years. These last two years have been complete and utter hell for me and if anyone dispassionately looked at my life they would say “you have every reason to think God hates you.” But, the funny thing is that I grew even closer to God during this time. When I had every reason to run away and say “God, you abandoned me in trouble after trouble,” instead I ran to him. I don’t know why other than he was the only one that could help. Without all my troubles I never would have rediscovered God’s unconditional love. He didn’t create my troubles but he used them to draw me to him. I still have troubles (who doesn’t?) but in my spirit I am so much calmer, peaceful and happy. I was never this way in the past.

God’s unconditional love shows up in our spirit, no matter the outside earthly circumstances.

But it also seems reasonable that God wouldn’t care about my life or what I do or what I feel, experience, or suffer. I’m just a nobody in a world of billions of souls past, present, and future.
God has no limit to His attention or focus. He is as aware and focused on you as he is of the greatest and most moral movers in history.

God can feel distant at times. Many people who we call saints would agree that they felt this way personally at different points in there lives. You’re not a horrible person because of this. But keep up your prayer life, engage in works of mercy, keep that relationship going even when it’s tough.

Yes, of course Jesus earned Heaven for us. But it’s not easy for us either. The path to heaven is narrow, riddled with thorns. We suffer, but we have to learn to accept that suffering as a cross.

We are rewarded with heaven because we earned it in the sense that we chose God.

I believe that God loves us unconditionally + collectively but I find it hard to believe in a more personal love

Today I read that God’s light can shine through us the weaker we are… I thought, wow, the more holes we have (the more we need God) the more he can shine through us to other people… seems unreal.

Lea, think of all the choices there were at the moment of your conception. I know that’s kind of very personal, but there were thousands of possibilities and HERE YOU ARE!!! THAT is personal!!!

Yes, you are one of billions of other souls. A mere speck, less than a speck.
But.
God is not limited to where He cannot intimately know many people.

We choose hell … God doesn’t send us there … we dive into hell all by ourselves.

Quote: Life everlasting promised to us, (Romans 5:21); but unaided we can do nothing to gain it (Rom.7:18-24).
.
It is grace of Christ that delivers us (Rom.7:25); and makes us co-heirs with Him (Rom.8:17).
.
This, the beneficent purpose of an all-seeing Providence, is wholly gratuitous, entirely unmerited (Romans 3:24; 9:11-2).
.
It extends to all men (Romans 2:10; 1 Timothy 2:4), even to the reprobate Jews (Romans 11:26 sq.); and by it all God’s dealings with man are regulated (Ephesians 1:11).
.
All things are created and governed with a view to man, to the development of his life and his intelligence, and to the satisfaction of his needs (Aristides, “Apol.”, i, v, vi, xv, xvi;).
.
It extends to every individual, adapting itself to the needs of each (St. John Chrysostom, “Hom. xxviii in Matt.”, n. 3 in “P.G.”, LVII, 354).
.
His wisdom He so orders all events within the universe that the end for which it was created may be realized.
.
That end is that all creatures should manifest the glory of God, and in particular that man should glorify Him, recognizing in nature the work of His hand, serving Him in obedience and love, and thereby attaining to the full development of his nature and to eternal happiness in God. End quote.
