My maternal Gramma used to call my kitty “Puddy” when I was growing up, at home.

She did that like the character “Granny” in the old Warner Brothers animated cartoons, with Sylvester and Tweety.

My cat’s name is Shifara (Shi-ph’ra - Hebrew for ‘thunder’, the name of one of the Hebrew midwives who refused to kill Hebrew infant boys at the time of Moses’ infancy…according to an ancient Jewish Madrasah).

She gets called Shiffy, Shif-fy-do-dah, Shif-fit-ty-do-dah–shif-fit-ty-ay!, Teeny-tiny-kitty, and sometimes Stupid.

Not really pet names as such ,just silly talk …I just caught myself uttering the silliest endearments while hugging the second identical lanky black kitten…

I have no idea what it means but he’s purring happily still.

We had several for our dog Buddy.

One was Muddy Buddy when he would roll around after a rain storm and get all muddy. Another was Stinky after he was skunked or decided to get in my compost pile.

Sometimes I’d call him Fog Horn after he would cut loose with that famous beagle howl.

I’ll call mine “leopard cat,” or little “wild cat” when she gets those spurts where she’ll take off running.

She hasn’t done it lately but sometimes she’ll just take off running and playing and will go tearing about. It’s really cute to see. I think it’s just instinct kicking in when they do that.
