Looks like they can’t keep people out of harm’s way must longer. Amity must open for the summer and that means swimming with the shark.
Not to detract but you do have this attraction to this movie. You do realize the Cape Cod has more sharks than ever due to increase seal population.
Now sharks – namely great white sharks that can be 6 feet to 18 feet long – are part of the everyday beach life. They’ve congregated here in pursuit of dinner in the form of gray seals, which have repopulated in Cape Cod after a federal prohibition on hunting seals was enacted a half-century ago.Aug 20, 2019

I have had people in my family who have been sick too and not tested. I hope these antibody tests hit the market also. Doctors are telling us to expect a spike in cases so I don’t think we should panic if rates of illness go up…
Watching the numbers on a worldwide basis, I count it as a very good sign when the number of confirmed cases rises substantially compared to the number of deaths. That says to me that the area has finally been able to do something like enough testing. When the apparent death rate is high compared to the number of identified cases, you know that most of the cases aren’t being identified.

The only time a low number of confirmed cases is a good sign is when the number of deaths is also very low (or non-existent). That means that the area is likely to be seeing the virus actually receding. (Forgive me, but I also don’t trust numbers from governments who have the power to lie if they see fit. Maybe they’re telling the truth, but you can’t know unless they get caught in an ugly truth on a regular basis. When a government’s performance sounds too good to be true, the chances are that it is.)

I’m glad that some of the restrictions are being relaxed a little when it comes to outdoor exercise. I know plenty of people who work with me in the hospital are gaining weight and losing fitness levels/strength because of the enforced sequestering.

Some of these people were used to working out in a gym on the special equipment and in classes every day, and many of them used a trainer. They tried to maintain the same level of exercise on their own, but it’s not working for them, and they are frustrated and doing what many people do when they can’t control their weight–they’re eating and sitting around!

It’s kind of interesting in a terrible sort of way to see these healthy people behaving like I behave all the time–although in the last year, I have made a lot of changes and have lost 35 pounds.

I am trying very hard to keep the weight off, but it’s difficult. I’ve been buying fruits and veges and planning healthy meals–but something about this week has beaten me down. I’ve been nibbling on those little candy bars and eating potato chips. Something is hurting in my foot (had major surgery on it ten years ago to repair a broken posterior tibialis–the big tendon that supports the arch), and it’s hard for me to walk without the foot “flopping” and it really really hurts–I should probably go to my podiatrist, but I don’t even know if she’s seeing people–I guess I should find out before I eat myself to death.

And my poor husband is hopeless–he’s finshing entire bags of potato chips and Hershey’s kisses every day! Sigh.

I’m describing this because I know that other people are having the same issues with fitness, food, and depression, and it’s awful! And their kids are the same way–sitting around is not helping them stay healthy!

This is why I want to see the parks and rec paths and other recreational sites OPEN again–we’re all going to be fatties if we have to keep this up for any length of time. Not all of us have a home like the ones in those Peloton commercials!!

Anyone else on CAF having trouble staying slim and trim during the Shelter in Place?

My understanding is people are fishing. Boat ramps and Marina’s are open.

I heard one of our local privately-owned gyms sent their equipment home with their members! The owner wanted his peeps to have at least some equipment to use.

I hear you! The sooner we can re-open gyms, the better. (Wow, if you thought people who didn’t sanitize after they used the equipment used to get the death stares from everybody else, lol…)

What is this with testing. How many more tests? Japan doesn’t test.

It is by area. Some areas are open. They are fishing but that only entails a very small number of people. All state parks are closed so access to boating ramps is not there. And if the restrictions are such that you have to 6 feet apart, how do you do that with children?

The hiking trails of the White mountain is a big one because hiking/biking is a big outlet.
Wilderness officials shut down more than 100 trailheads, shelters, picnic areas and other sites in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest.

In a situation where there are fewer and smaller outbreaks, the health department can trace the contacts of people who are known to have the virus and greatly reduce the number of asymptomatic carriers that are walking around. This keeps the overall likelihood of encountering the virus lower, which in turn shortens the length of a local outbreak.

When an area has a big outbreak but not enough testing, the chances are that there are a much higher fraction of the population walking around transmitting the disease without knowing it. It is like a flood you can’t see. If you have a flood you can see, you can avoid the torrents and identify where the high ground is. If you have a flood you can’t see, then you can be swept away before you know what hit you.

Nobody want to go through what the hospitals in the city of New York have been going through. It is hideous.

Ah–our area does not count members of a household as needing to keep 6 feet from each other. We only have to keep 6 feet away from people who aren’t members of our own households. If you have 8 kids living with you, you and your spouse and your 8 kids can go out where ever you like. Our sons live in the same house with two other guys, and the four of them go out and it isn’t a problem. They’re asked, they say they live together, and it is OK.

Majority of NE does not have the rate of infection as NYC, one major city. It is a big area, with very little disease. We are totally locked now for 42 days.

Guess what surfers in wetsuits look like to a Great White? There have been seals and whales off Long Island, close enough to the mythical Amity.
I have cited it a bunch of times you are right. The dillemma the shark causes the towns people trying to open up, just has everything in common with right now.
If you read the impetuous groans about opening;
The this can’t be worse than the that;
Herds
Or garden variety, we are going to die anyway ;
You can still imagine the Amity Chamber of Commerce.
The outrage over vandalizing the sign.
It’s going to be the best summer we ever had( Manuchin/Ludlow)
And most important, the Mayor’s( it’s to late now) lament," Brody my kids were swimming too."
They are predicting a spike. ( More dead family and friends)
Today we have herds and demographics( old and sick) that give some cover. In the movie swimmers and sardines percieve safety in numbers. Lol

Change behavior, change the statistics.
NYC is relevant. It illustrates what can be.

Some Americans stay thin walking to and from the food and soup lines.

Really.

NYC rates are all down and healing The rest of NE needs freedom, open hiking trails, beaches, state parks, let people lose.

Over 50k dead. When they open it may double.
Friends and neighbors are grieving, you are alive. Remember, we surpassed 12 years of Viet Nam casualties in the last 12 weeks.
Roller skating and jogging?

Yes hiking, outdoors activity. People move and don’t stand still breathing on each other.

There’s an interesting new article in the Washington Post:
Results from coronavirus antibody tests have started to trickle in, and they bolster the consensus among disease experts that the virus is significantly more lethal than seasonal flu and has seeded the most disruptive pandemic in the past century…

The new serological data, which is provisional, suggests that coronavirus infections greatly outnumber confirmed covid-19 cases, potentially by a factor of 10 or more. Many people experience mild symptoms or none at all, and never get the standard diagnostic test with a swab up the nose, so they’re missed in the official covid-19 case counts.

Higher infection rates mean lower lethality risk on average. But the corollary is that this is a very contagious disease capable of being spread by people who are asymptomatic — a challenge for communities hoping to end their shutdowns.

The crude case fatality rates, covering people who have a covid-19 diagnosis, have been about 6 percent globally as well as in the United States. But when all the serological data is compiled and analyzed, the fatality rate among people who have been infected could be less than 1 percent.

But as infectious disease experts point out, even a seemingly low rate can translate into a shockingly large death toll if the virus spreads through a major portion of the population.

Hopefully they don’t. It’s a portal to portal thing with lots of people

Some Americans stay thin walking to and from the food and soup lines.
And some Americans who have a low income are overweight or obese because they eat the starchy food (e.g., white bread) that they receive from the food pantry.

I’ve been doing pretty well at walking, but between my bad left knee (total replacement scheduled Aug 7 and rescheduled for Sept 25!) and my bad right foot (floppy–yes, I WILL call the podiatrist tomorrow!)–it’s hard for me to make much of a calorie-burning workout out of the walk.

And I’ve been doing real well at not overeating until this week–not sure why. Just getting sick of living the same day over and over and over again, I guess.

Sigh. Have to nip it in the bud. I have an annual physical scheduled for the end of May and I was hoping to amaze my doctor with my weight loss and fitness level!

Good luck with your surgery. Hopefully you get in on time. Then therapy also. 75k and likely more will be dead by September. Being bored and overeating means it’s not you.
