You’re aware, I hope, that the H1N1 virus back in 2009 killed way more people worldwide than the current virus? And there was no social distancing or shelter-in-place orders for that virus…

If you look at the CDC’s website, it shows that H1N1 killed almost twice as many people in the U.S. alone as COVID-19 has killed world-wide.

When people come in contact this most virulent bug will spread again immediately as it did before. Just the same way it had.

Yes, i agree that we will see a second surge in positive COVID-19 tests.

My question is, how many people will be sick for a few days or a week and spend it at home on their sofa dozing through Netflix shows, and how many will arrivae at the end their lives in ICU on a respirator?

Many many people get the flu every year and many die–but many do not. Has COVID-19 killed all of the people that were susceptible to an attack from a virus that they didn’t have the strength to fend off, or are there still plenty of people who will not be able to withstand a virus that merely makes other people spend a week or two on the sofa?

And are there enough people who had the virus, lived through it (either survived by a miracle, or didn’t even realize they were sick), and are now immune, to keep the virus from creating another “Shelter in Place” defense?

Maximus1, as cold as it sounds, there is a part of me that thinks that instead of hiding in our homes, we should all just head out and face it, and hope we are among the survivors who achieve “immunity.” (Sounds like a kid’s playground game, doesn’t it?). I think if we don’t try this strategy, we will be facing a yearly, perhaps twice-yearly dogfight with this virus and there will be many casualties.

But there’s that other part that says we should hunker down and wait for the virus to mutate into a less-deadly form.
To me, that’s the question.

The deaths that occurred due to covid19 have occurred during the course of about 6-7 weeks. Not a year.

The CDC website indicates 12,469 people died in the US due to H1N1 (and 151,700-575,400 globally - big range of uncertainty). That seems low to me, considering the CDC’s average range is 12,000-60,000 annually (from flu). Do you have a link that says otherwise?

I got my numbers from the CDC. And yes, they say that H1N1 killed up to 575,400 globally.

I may have misspoke. A couple of the sources I looked at said the total worldwide death count from COVID-19 was under 8,000 (somewhere in the range of 7,800+). But I’m looking at an article now that’s saying the total count is at slightly under 200,000.

For far too long, we have had the notion that little kids need to start right out using hand sanitizers and be exposed to as few germs as possible. This is a mistake. Their immune systems need to be exposed in order to develop strength.

Young immune systems need to be given some work to do. But, because exposure is kept to an absolute minimum almost from the day they are born, their bodies aren’t given much of a chance to build up immunity against much of anything.

The old adage applies here: “Use it, or lose it.”

So far this disease has not shown to be deadly in any form to children in general. Yes there are a few children who have medical conditions that should not be exposed.

School is not going to start up for the most part nor are colleges so let’s go on from there. Let the parents who feel comfortable with letting their children play at parks go.

Things to look for.
What is the times frame: 1 year; 18 months of the pandemic; from 2009 to 2018?
Please bear in mind that we are only months into this pandemic.

What do the ranges quoted mean? Are the 95% CIs? If so the best estimate of the true value is the mean, not the extreme.
What was the methodology? Raw data from clinical confirmed cases and deaths? Statistical modeling to fill in the under counts of diagnosed case and out of hospital deaths?

A fair comparison at this point woudl be to look at clinical cases in the first months of the pandemic.
This comparison shows SARS-Cov-2 to be about 100-fold worse than H1N1pdm09.

This is not true.

Tens of thousands die of the flu every year,

And we are looking at upwards of 70 thousand in the first wave of COVID-19 - with strong mitigation.
The distinction is not subtle.

People driven into hysteria even though it was discovered rather quickly that young people would not die from virus. I am certain that many families fought to see their sick/dying love ones. They are still fighting.
