Does anyone know who owns Black Lives Matter?

If I send a donation to BLM, who has the authorised signature to use it? Are the funds audited? Or could it just be a money-making scam?

Or could it just be a money-making scam?
I know all of the founders are professional activists and made a lot of money and presumably got a lot of connections through BLM. Not necessarily a “scam”, but a lot of people personally benefit from this kind of activism.

Well, if the funds are audited and they are paid agreed remuneration I agree it isn’t a scam.

But I cannot see any statement about use of funds other than a remark on their website which says “we are expensive.”

If they are just taking money for themselves out of donations without mentioning the fact, that’s a scam.

Ok but what is the relationship between ActBlue Charities and Black Lives Matter?

Plenty of non-profits are legal scams, they follow the legal requirements but just don’t seem to have much money that goes to the claimed charity.

One should always check the likes of Charity Navigator to peek below the covers.

Has anyone done that with black Lives Matter?

I mean, there must be many millions of dollars involved. Surely someone has checked where the money is going?

BLM the group has mutated so far beyond a notion we could actually support (that Black people’s lives are just as important as anyone’s) into a manifesto of progressive talking points and agenda items. they are a political action group where conservatives who value black lives and abhor violence are not welcome. I doubt half the protesters carrying signs with BLM on them know half of what the group stands for.

From their website:

These are the results of our collective efforts.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network is as powerful as it is because of our membership, our partners, our supporters, our staff, and you. Our continued commitment to liberation for all Black people means we are continuing the work of our ancestors and fighting for our collective freedom because it is our duty.

Every day, we recommit to healing ourselves and each other, and to co-creating alongside comrades, allies, and family a culture where each person feels seen, heard, and supported.

We acknowledge, respect, and celebrate differences and commonalities.

We work vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension, all people.

We intentionally build and nurture a beloved community that is bonded together through a beautiful struggle that is restorative, not depleting.

We are unapologetically Black in our positioning. In affirming that Black Lives Matter, we need not qualify our position. To love and desire freedom and justice for ourselves is a prerequisite for wanting the same for others.

We see ourselves as part of the global Black family, and we are aware of the different ways we are impacted or privileged as Black people who exist in different parts of the world.

We are guided by the fact that all Black lives matter, regardless of actual or perceived sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, immigration status, or location.

We make space for transgender brothers and sisters to participate and lead.

We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.

We build a space that affirms Black women and is free from sexism, misogyny, and environments in which men are centered.

We practice empathy. We engage comrades with the intent to learn about and connect with their contexts.

We make our spaces family-friendly and enable parents to fully participate with their children. We dismantle the patriarchal practice that requires mothers to work “double shifts” so that they can mother in private even as they participate in public justice work.

We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.

We foster a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).

We cultivate an intergenerational and communal network free from ageism. We believe that all people, regardless of age, show up with the capacity to lead and learn.

We embody and practice justice, liberation, and peace in our engagements with one another.

As a Catholic, I wouldn’t associate with a group promoting number of things any more than I would with a group promoting hatred. too much is incompatible with Church teachings.

Plus, any group or person who uses a mish-mosh of alphabet soup, pseduo-intellectual phrasiology like this “We engage comrades with the intent to learn about and connect with their contexts.” deserves a major eye-roll, if not pointing & laughing ala Nelson Muntz.

I’ve never heard the term “pass through charities”. Would United Way be an example of one, also?

Pass though - fund collection for many charities - classed as a Pass-Through Nonprofit

A list of their pass through to clients is listed at the link above …

Personally I would donate directly to a charity - but that is me
Are you sure that’s the right link?

They give all their money to a single non-profit - Campaign Legal Center
If I read it right.

I am not sure exactly - I think they do some direct charitable work - I stopped donating to United Way decades ago as they support Planned Parenthood and also stopped supporting some Catholic Charities that I wanted money to go to …

Personally, I only donate to charities that support values I support and where I can be assured that most if not 100% of the funds are used for the specific purpose I intend and not high overhead and fund raising. I don’t donate to those who don’t get a minimum of 90% to the intended purpose - and my real goal is 94-96%. I also tend to choose charities that actually make a difference - measurable difference.

I do likewise. I haven’t donated to United Way in many many years which created some friction at work when they had their big UW push each year.

I don’t ate regularly to several charities and try to also give some to small seldom heard of ones but I always investigate what goes where and executive’s costs. I’ve been disappointed in how bad some charities are! There are also very good ones…those get my money and always directly mailed to them.

Maximian asked about ActBlue Charities … the linked discussed the type of charitable organization it is …

Here is the direct link https://secure.actblue.com/

I personally do not have direct knowledge because they do not support charities or causes that I would and ergo, I have never and would never use them … nor would I personally donate to Black Lives Matter … I was just trying to be helpful to someone who wanted to know how BLM and ActBlue Charities were connected

So ActBlue isn’t the end recipient, it just passes money to BLM who, for all we know, spend it on cigars, vintage claret and old masters
