I’m the mother of a 30-year-old and a 27-year-old. Although they will always be my “children,” they are definitely NOT children, and haven’t been children since they graduated from college in their early twenties (21 and 23–the two extra years were for grad school). At that point, they were both supporting themselves and functioning as adults, independent of their parents. And one of them majored in theater, so don’t tell me that only certain educational choices actually lead to “jobs.” Baloney! My theater kid is savvy and smart and works like a slave to stay employed as a theater professional; she hasn’t taken a “vacation” or even a long weekend in years.
I think it’s sickening that the government is encouraging young adults to remain 'children." What a disgrace! A whole generation of Peter Pans. And parents who should be saving for their own retirement are still footing the bill for their “children.” This is a disastrous course.
Certainly there are young adults who, because of a disability, must remain at home under the care of parents. But most young adults should be getting OUT of their parents’ homes and living on their own and supporting themselves.
Instead of passing a bill encouraging 26-year-olds to depend on mommy and daddy, our government ought to be doing whatever is necessary to encourage the growth of the economy which would mean jobs that would enable 26-year-olds to pay for their own health insurance. When I say, “do whatever is necessary,” I mean that all politicians need to set aside their political loyalties and ambitions, study the science of economics, and make wise decisions regardless of their party platforms.
