Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna and head of the Austrian Church, gave an interview to Austrian editors last week in which he stated, “We should give more consideration to the quality of homosexual relationships,” adding: “A stable relationship is certainly better than if someone chooses to be promiscuous.”

This is apparently not the first time the Cardinal has given at least tacit approval to homosexual unions. In 2006, the rector of his Cathedral parish in Vienna conducted a St. Valentine Day blessing of couples which he openly invited gay couples to attend and receive blessings. The rector said he had the Cardinal’s permission.

In last week’s interview, Cardinal Schönborn also attacked the Dean of the College of Cardinals, saying that Cardinal Angelo Sodano “deeply wronged” the victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy when he dismissed media reports of the scandal as “petty gossip”. Cardinal Schönborn also said the Roman Curia was “urgently in need of reform”.

Wow, there’s a lot of issues here. Your thoughts?

Cardinal Schönborn, whom many considered to be a Papabile during the last conclave, also said the Church needed to reconsider its view of re-married divorcees “as many people don’t even marry at all any longer”.

The primary thing to consider should not be the sin, but people’s striving to live according to the commandments, he said. Instead of a morality based on duty, we should work towards a morality based on happiness, he continued.

See that last bit “a morality based on happiness”, is the problem. We don’t do things because they’re easy or make us happy. We do them because they’re the right thing to do.

This is a bit weird as Cardinal Schönborn comes across as very conservative in this report by the TimesOnline and cannot understand his hard stand on the abuse issue and not the other? 🤷

Archbishop of Vienna accuses one of Pope’s closest aides of abuse cover-up

**Open warfare broke out in the Vatican over the clerical sex abuse scandal at the weekend as Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, accused one of Pope Benedict XVI’s closest aides of covering up past scandals.

Cardinal Schönborn, 65, seen as a possible future Pope, accused Cardinal Angelo Sodano, 82, the former Vatican Secretary of State (Prime Minister), of having blocked investigations into sex abuse crimes committed by his predecessor in Vienna, the late Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer.

What is weird is that the article mentions the Popes trip to Portugal and the cover-up of the third secret of Fatima which alleges the collapse of the Roman Catholic Church in scandals and “apostasy” . Maybe the prophecies of Saint Malachy are correct since he is recognized as a saint so wouldn’t his prophetic visions be regarded as legitimate? Then, we also have a passage in the writings of the early church fathers that I came across that said to have be passed down from the Apostle John. I have to find it again. The passage generally stated and this is from my memory, that in the end times prior to the appearance of Christ’s returns, the laity will be against the priests, priests against bishops, bishops against other bishops and chaos will reign in the church. I have to find that passage again.

What we do have is Jesus statement that there will be a great falling away from the church just prior to His return.

I apologize…he says sheepishly…as I may have wandered off topic a bit but it was mentioned in the article in the TimesOnline.

Question-Can a Cardinal say these things, even though they might be his opinon? I have no idea. I know they probably don’t all feel the same way about everything, but can they be public with these questions? From what I get, he’s not even dissenting, just raising ideas.

There are two sins in particular that all of us, including the Cardinal, are susceptible to commit. One, the tendency to say things to please certain people or groups instead of firmly speaking the truth when it might offend them. Second, the tendency to say things contrary to the official teachings of the Church because we think we “know better”. Lack of courage and pride cause many of us to not do our duty in proclaiming the truth which leads to confusion in the minds and hearts of others.

“A stable relationship is certainly better than if someone chooses to be promiscuous.”
Pope John Paul II made a similar point as regards heterosexual relationships (see here):
  1. There are increasing cases of Catholics who for ideological or practical reasons, prefer to contract a merely civil marriage, and who reject or at least defer religious marriage. Their situation cannot of course be likened to that of people simply living together without any bond at all, because in the present case there is at least a certain commitment to a properly-defined and probably stable state of life, even though the possibility of a future divorce is often present in the minds of those entering a civil marriage. By seeking public recognition of their bond on the part of the State, such couples show that they are ready to accept not only its advantages but also its obligations. Nevertheless, not even this situation is acceptable to the Church.

I would disagree with him on that last point but I am not in his position.

Card. Schonborn is extremely smart, one of the theologians who worked on the Catechism and the author of Chance or Creation? so I don’t think his orthodoxy is in question.

As Archbishop when he puts om his pastor’s hat (or mitre) he may (from our POV) run aground trying to minister to his gay or divorced & remarried sheep.

I don’t know this Cardinal, but we all have to be very careful regarding Media reports and hearsay.
If he sent out a press release on his letterhead or posted it on his web site, you could take that to the bank regarding his thoughts rather than misinterpretations.

Our responsibilities are to follow and support the teachings in the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” revised in accordance with the official Latin text promulgated by Pope John Paul II, (and first printed in the US in March 2000).

All Members of the Catholic Church have this responsiblity regardless of rank.
If any indvidual denies any truths in this Catechism, they are a heretic.

For those wanting Catholic opinions, be sure to read the religion of the poster. Many non-Catholic postings would be heretical if they were Catholics.
Watch for confusing discussions where the facts may be misconstrued…

Sexual acts outside of marriage (defined as being between one man and one women) is a grave sin. END of SUBJECT.

And be careful of things taken out of context, or shortened. If the last sentence of the John Paul quote above were removed, the entire import of the quote is changed to become one leaning towards heresy. Complicated thoughts require full paragraphs, which, when quoted, can be truncated by individuals to alter intent.

Well, he’s right. A stable relationship is better than promiscuity.

Folks - I’ve done my homework.
This Cardinal is heretical - but not excommunicated at this time.

Do you all see what is happening in the Church, world-wide?
Do you think it is strange that all US Bishops, and all Bishops across the World do not want to prominently promote the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” on all Diocese and Parish web sites?

Without the authentic teaching of the CCC, everyone simply does their own thing.
No one is positive what to believe because some Cardinals/Bishops do not want us to believe what is in the Bible or CCC. They want to destroy the Church.

Whereever you are in the US or the World, get your Bishop and Parish Priest to put a link on their web sites to the CCC.
vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/ccc_toc.htm
or
vatican.va/phome_en.htm
and search Catechism

Each of you has a responsiblity.

This is cardinal seems to want to stir things up within the Church.

just look at the Mass in which he is involved.

that is enough for me to understand what is happening with this Cardinal.

what happened with correction? we remember what happened with St Peter when he did something inapropriate within the Church. St Paul came and corrected him. now and days, it seems like everybody is afraid to correct the other and heresy begin to spread and making disciples.

that is why i only listen to the Traditional Catholic teachings and no other.

something really horrible is happening in the Church.

Pope John Paul II was not referring to homosexual relations and acts in the passage quoted above, but to heterosexual relations between people who seem to be seeking a stable commitment. But some actions and relations are contra naturam, and stability in them would be tantamount to Hell. That is what is absurd about comparing an act contra naturam with a potentially marital act or relation. Homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered (cf the Catechism of the Catholic Church).
