There is so much wriggling that needs to be done to make the BOM “work”. It doesn’t matter if they didn’t fight directly on the hill, if there was a battle, I’m pretty sure some kind of archeological evidence would have been discovered in the 1,625 years there have been to discover said artifacts.Paul,
I understand why it appears to you that Joseph Smith was saying that the Hill Cumorah near where he lived was the same hill mentioned in Mormon 6, but in the first place, even if it were that same area they did not fight on the hill–they fought in the general area where the hill was, which could mean miles away from the hill itself, in scattered battles also with each army having a separate battle as described by Moroni.
. . .
In the third place, Joseph Smith wrote at one time that he saw a room full of records (in vision) that Moroni was familiar with, and that the plates deposited in the Hill Cumorah site were not the entire set of Nephite records, so just because Moroni talks about a “hill called Cumorah” does not necessarily mean that the hill near Joseph Smith was the same hill. Moroni could have placed those particular plates in that particular hill near where Joseph Smith would be living in 1823, at any point during the 36 years after that battle described in Mormon 6. Moroni was also a resurrected being, so he could have moved the plates at any point as a resurrected being, also. He was the custodian of the sacred plates, with that particular responsibility given to him by God.
Why do you need to complicate the whole Moroni with the gold plates deal? How many hills are there called Cumorah? You have to assume (hope) that there is some other hill out there called Cumorah so that you can say, “It’s impossible to know where to excavate.” One question that I’m sure you get a lot, if these gold plates were so important, why didn’t God want everyone to see them? I mean, He makes His will known through your current prophets, correct? Why would he not want everyone to be able to see His supreme will as dictated through the plates that the BOM supposedly came from? I find that hard to believe.
Also one more thing, what do you mean that Moroni could have moved the plates anytime as a resurrected being? Are you saying he had some kind of magical teleportation powers or are you saying he could just walk a very long distance?
Why not? There was nothing resembling current or even the 19th century New York in 385 AD, all of the area around them would have been “country,” I’m not sure what you’re trying to say.In the second place, verse 15 talks about “a few who had escaped into the south countries”, which does not lead one to believe that the place being described is what is now upstate New York.
