Does 'repetition' = 'vain repitition'?

I didn’t say that. I don’t repeat my prayers in succession.

I think you’re missing the point. You say the Our Father and Hail Mary in succession… one after the other. You need a rosary just like the buddhist rosary just to keep track. In other words…

Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Our Father…
Now wait a minute. This was not specifically about the prayers of the rosary. This is specifically about repeating a prayer not being the same as vainly repetitious prayer.

You can admit that one can repeat a prayer many times without anyone saying that you admit that the rosary is not vainly repetitious. Or you can continue to twist scripture and say that repeating a prayer is the same as vainly repetitious prayer thereby saying that God caused a the human nature of Christ to sin.

You’re missing the point. I explained earlier that the POINT of the rosary is not the repeated prayers, it’s the meditations on Christ. Would my prayer still be heard by God if I only prayed one Hail Mary? YES! The purpose of the repetitions is to mark time while we meditate on Christ. God won’t smite me down if I lose count and only pray nine Hail Marys.

And we don’t need beads…you can pray the rosary without them, count on your fingers, etc.

My advice is to research this more. Most Catholics do not repeat 10 Our Fathers during a rosary…you clearly have no knowledge of you subject.

I’m this close to saying a rosary for you. 😉
Yes, I know. I was going to say “Hail Mary” but I don’t consider that a prayer so I used the Our Father instead.

Actually, I don’t know what to say about the rosary. You’re trying to pray to Mary several times. 13 I think and call it meditating on Christ. I just don’t understand that one.

Did Jesus repeat His prayers?
Not like the heathen. As far as I know… Jesus said I could pray to God in His name. He didn’t mention anything about Mary. In fact, Mary prayed to God too.

Then don’t say anything about the Rosary.

Again, you can admit than one is allowed to repeat prayers without it being vainly repetitious without admitting/discussing anything about whether or not the Rosary is vainly repetitious or just repeating prayers.

So the Douay-Rheims deleted God’s words.

Vain Repetition comes from battologeo
  1. to stammer
  2. to repeat the same things over and over, to use many idle words, to babble, prate. Some suppose the word derived from Battus, a king of Cyrene, who is said to have stuttered; others from Battus, an author of tedious and wordy poems.
Hi Believers,

I actually think the King James added words. Around 350 AD St. Jerome phrased it “speak much”, the King James translaters called it “vain repetion” in 1619.

Based on your supplied definition of the Greek, they both make sense, but I still take Jerome’s translation as authoritative. He saw and translated the original manuscripts, the translators for the King James saw copies over 1250 years after Jerome translated them.

Also, Jerome was fluent in Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic and Latin, having been raised knowing those languages. I can’t say the same for the later translators.

Granted, this is only my opinion and I’ve often been wrong, but I think Jerome would be the authority to translate, not someone 1000 years later.

With love,
George

Actually, what I meant to say was… The rosary is completely unscriptural. It glorifies Mary.

It kind of reminds me of

Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Just when I was going to leave this discussion… you just had to insert your 2 cents. OK… Answer this and we’ll continue

Did Jesus say to pray to any one else but God the Father?
We don’t know, because the scriptures are silent on the matter.

Do Jesus issue any prohibition us from praying to anyone else in heaven?

You can find most of the Hail Mary word for word in the Gospels, so it would be hard for the rosary to be completely unscriptural.

How about the “like the heathen” part of that verse? It obviously says there is a way the heathen pray that is forbidden.

I like that, the Rosary unscriptural.

Hail Mary Full of Grace the Lord is with thee. (Luke 1:28)Blessed art thou among women And blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus (Luke 1:42). Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. (Where in scripture does it tell us not to ask fellow believers to pray for us?)

Jesus DID repeat prayers so clearly there is a difference between repeating prayers and vainly repetitious.

Again, this is not an admission that the rosary is not vainly repetitious, it is just admitting that it IS in fact scriptural to repeat prayers as Our Lord did, As the psalmist did, as Paul did and even as the angels are doing right now.

Why would I pray to a creature when I can pray to the creator?

I’ve never discused my issues with the Hail Mary so this will be my first time on the matter.

The Word of God does not give Mary the title “Holy Mary” neither does it give her the title of “Mother of God” or “Mother of Son of God”. She was given the title of “mother of Jesus”.

So yes, completely unscriptural.

And clearly simply repeating the prayer is not the “heathen” way or Christ would have never done so. Paul would have never done so. God would not have inspired the psalmist to write prayers that repeated themselves if REPEATING were the sin.
